I'm Making a Holiday Barbie Dress!

It's time for holiday sewing, and what better way to kick off the season than with a giant gold lame Barbie dress, right?
I am making 1994 Holiday Barbie as part of a last minute (at least for me) group cosplay for Emerald City Comicon, so I have about 1.5 weeks to make this giant gown. Wish me luck!

To cut fauxfur! Use a knife on the back of the backing fabric, just cutting thru the fabric and not the fur. This makes MUCH less of a mess! I would go with the wig that looks better on you. What will Dora do for midnight entertainment if you catch her kitchen mouse?!

This fur rips on grain, which is super awesome. And kitchen mouse has now moved into my office. The good thing is, it's an isolated room, so I'm letting it be in there with no food and tons of mouse traps everywhere.

When this barbie came out my mom made a boy version of this outfit for me. Basically she considered the odd front part the front side closure. It made more sense to her. So I had a gold coat over a fancy fabric pants. :}

The headpiece could be colored jingle bells. There's usually picks in the floral department with jingle bells and holly. Lots of fun if you don't mind extra noise.

This is exciting. My mom collected Barbie dolls and had all the holiday Barbies through 2001 (she died in 2002). I’m not a big Barbie fan but this one was one of my faves.

I'd have done front fastening and have the jeweled front plastron hide it. For the seam on the sleeves, use seam binding on the section that bugs you. Def on the separate underskirt. try a bit of cord through the hole in the zip. Never too much lame lol

A quick & dirty last-minute fix for the itchy parts of those inside sleeve seams might be to wear large bandaids on your arms, right where the seams irritate your skin. I've done something similar on my feet when the inside seams of new shoes rub my feet. (If you have the time, though, a soft non-itchy lining should work even better.)

That is so cool; the way you just look at Barbie and then sew the thing! Solution for the bra straps; sew a very thin satin ribbon to the shoulder seam then sew a snap to the neck end of the ribbon. Take the ribbon and slip it under your bra strap and snap it to the shoulder seam. I cannot wait to see the finished dress; you're going to be so shiny! ☺ xoxo's Sandie

That's exactly what my mom & I used to do for weird necklines on my tops back in the 80s! (Those suuuuper-wide boatneck openings were no friend to anybody who needed supportive bras.) I can't tell you how many snaps/ribbons I made/attached. I'm actually threatening to do it again to a couple of tops I've bought recently (can I have a word with the designers who decided those things should come back in fashion?), but I'm also nearly 50 & mostly don't care if my straps show. LOL

I always like the trick of putting the hook part of a wire hanger thru the zipper pull (or tape it on) and then using the large part as aa much better handle to completely pull up the zip. You can even flip 🙃 it upside down and pull it up like a exercise curl, to get it all the way up the back.

You can either just double it through the pull and then let go of one end and pull it through (so that it's removed entirely) once the zipper is closed, or make it permanent and tuck it into the neckline as you suggest. Even if it comes loose it doesn't show from more than a foot or so away.

That is going to be a beautiful gown! I always thought that that Barbie was wearing a fur trimmed coat over a lace dress? I thought the front buttons were meant to be functional and the back snaps were for practicality- to make it look right doll sized.

Dora! Thank you for the Dora footage! The part where you and she mwwwwrrrrr at each other is 100% adorable. One of the things I love most about your videos is the time you take on fitting the mock ups. It’s so important and seeing the time and care you take for an excellent fit is so encouraging. Yesterday I was altering a thrift store bought blouse to fit and I think I had it on and off myself a dozen times before I had the fit I wanted. Put a length of string/yarn/ribbon through the top of the zipper so you can pull it up, then you can slide it out once it's at the top where you can reach it.

If those sleeves are still itchy, get a pair of tights and cut the tops and bottoms off and use each leg as a sleeve underneath. And someone else mentioned a ribbon but a length of embroidery floss threaded through the zipper pull works great!

That is the goldest dress I’ve ever seen! I can’t wait to see how you do all the jewelled and baubles part. Its amazing how you just figure things out, but it Can’t be easy to sew that fabric. Barbies were dull in my day but my girls adored them, games all over the house and making them little clothes for them. My oldest, she would have killed for that dress…still might. Can’t wait. Hello Dora, chatty lass, cat live always comes first. And who doesn’t have weird Nima’s in their house of they have cats. my cutest was a rabbit, herded I guess because it was huge and uninsured. I feel like the underskirt could just be done as tie-around apron skirt, rather than as an attached part of the dress. Go real old school with it and just don't attach it at all, like another petticoat

That dress looks awesome as it is already! To make the wig look better on you, you need to tone the red out of your eyebrows, make them taupe, ash grey. Use blue eyeshadow and white powder for your face. You have very strong pink skin tones and that needs to be made paler, think vampire.

What a stellar job you are doing! This video was delightful to watch I, too, loved the Dora footage. Have you made clothes for her? Bernadette Banner did a video of Cesario modeling Halloween costumes. Gunnar Deathridge shows how to cut faux fur in his Halloween costumes for a family video My vote is for a long satin ribbon zipper pull, if the eye of the zipper pull is too small for the ribbon, you can use a safety pin or, maybe a soft coated twist tie to make a bigger aperture. I make my own extended pull, because I like the independence; I use about two yards of ribbon, with a lark's head knot in the zipper eye (maybe yellow 1/4" satin ribbon from Jo Ann's.) Then, when it's zipped, tuck the ribbon it into the top/back of the dress. I second colored bells for the headband. Dollar tree may have some, and they ship. I advocate sewing something over or taping the seams where they itch. Alternately, the sleeves of a long t shirt may work. I loved the no-music, no speed cutting... but that is probably just me & a few others.

For the headband you could try to see if you can find one ore two beaded/plastic garlands to twist together and wire to a headband. You could use it for the earrings too.

For the Red "Buttons" Doen the front you can find Costume Jewlery brouches! A geometric round-shaped or a flower shaped one would look very nice! (I interpret the scale of the dress to mean it would open CF but barbie size uses back closers) You can move the Zipper to the sideseam because the neckline is large enough to fit you head, that way you can get in and out without help. Also to keep the neckline from streaching out so much you should use a stay stitch. It looks like it has streched out one you & you can spend all day chasing the stretch.

You could put a length of cotton through the zip pull then whoosh you have your back zipped up. So glad Dora is getting better, try toffee or chocolate or peanut butter in the mouse traps. We have a similar problem. If you catch them you need to take them at least 2 miles away so they don't come back. I caught 11 in one night in my utility room. They went into a small pet carrier and were set free in a wood far far away. Best wishes xx

Whem doing by my self a bodice I pin the sides to the corset, to at least makes sure that the fitting from the front is correct and the back does not affects the from bc is pulling maybe weird or not pulling at all cause is not close!

Not sure if you’ve bought different fur or decided to go with the one you showed here, but I really like Mendel’s. They’re based in San Francisco and have a wide range of fake fur. If you were to update the costume with new fur in the future, I’d go through them. I have found that ordering swatches first was the best way to go, because I could actually touch and manipulate the fur to get a feel for density, softness, and drape.

It might be too late by now, but! If you think the wig colour looks wrong on your face, try changing your eyebrow colour a bit. Your current colour is pretty warm and strong, which looks great on your everyday face. The wig might go better with someone a little more on the cooler side. Or not! It looks like a difficult colour to coordinate with. When I wore my hair pale blonde I actually used a kind of greyish beige, which sounds horrible but worked better than any browns I had. Mind you, I've got fairly thin brows. Meanwhile, the Barbie dress is very pretty so far. I particularly love the front skirt bit.

I am not sure if you have done the underskirt yet but you maybe able to attach it to elastic and have it as a separate skirt, not attached to the over skirt at all. You were worried about the stitches showing through the over skirt. Also if you want to attach it to the over skirt, you might try hand stitching it to the bottom layers of the over skirt instead of through all layers. I hope this made sense, I ramble sometimes lol.

If your bra straps keep showing you could make little loops to attach the bra to the inside shoulders of the dress. They are my favorite part of many wide necked blouses 🙂

For the annoying scratchy seam in the sleeve : Serge it. The lamae will be incased and you won't feel it. You won't be able to open the seam, but I don't feel like it's that important on sleeves.

Should work nicely. Used fake fur wedding boasto trim a santa girls masquerade dress for masquerade dance ones. Horrible to sew in due to fake fur all over the place and found that for years. But looks great

Hear me out. I think your back bodice issue is because you have an upright posture. I often have to fold the darts out of the back of McCalls and Butterick patterns to get them to fit correctly or make giant CB seams. I actually prefer princess seamed backs so I can distribute the excess over more seamlines for a better fit. Voice training and choir singing coaches you to have a very distinctive posture.

feel free to alter the barbie gown , her measurements if they were on a real PERSON or kens are so unrealistic , so no i think you made the right call with the bodice and the cut of it , you did good . besides if barbie were a real person , she'd fall over a group i am in actually calculated her and kens measurements to human scale and its freakishly impossible and it makes you laugh because neither of them could stand up straight or do anything if they were real ...yes us doll collectors calculate most dolls to human size porportions and the calculations make you laugh so hard . , its a gorgeous gown on you it really is and i wish you could use your own hair instead of a wig , because , they do have red head barbies and they are the most beautiful in the collection . If my friend’s Mom purchased holiday Barbie for $20 in 1994, the current price of $20something hasn’t even kept up with inflation. Yeah, yeah… some of them are worth big money now, but if that’s the goal, why give them to a child? Keep them on a shelf in your own room, and don’t taunt your small child with the “forbidden boxes” on the shelf in their room, that they’ll be in “big trouble” if they touch.

Yeah, I got that Barbie new back then. It was cool, and my Mom was trying to switch my interests from stuffed animals. It didn’t work. I was in high school with a room stuffed with stuffed animals and a few Barbies. I sold the Barbies in college.
