I mean, this was meta knowledge available to those who read D&D lore. The BG3 of course, does not give a clear answer at first, but once you see Orpheus inside, surely you understand the scam? There is really no logic to doubting Voss beyond that point.

They have used this ability to take their own soul and place it into an item or sometimes a location, effectively making them immortal. They no longer age, and if their physical form is destroyed, they are able to recreate it at their phylactery. However, to both sustain and strengthen themselves, they must provide a steady stream of living souls into their phylactery. She's essentially an undead sorceress that tricks her followers into feeding their souls to her.
