The base 455 doesn’t get a lot of love, but it was great performer, due to the tremendous torque delivered by the undersquare bore/stroke ratio. Best of all, it was easy to make the engine a real screamer with bolt-on Pontiac parts: Swapping the stock 4X heads for a set of 6X from a 400 engine would get the compression ratio up from 8:1 to 9:1. Adding a Ram Air III cam, an intake manifold from a 1970 455 engine toped with a 750cfm quadrajet carb, headers and flowmaster mufflers would get you a car that would run high 13s in the 1/4 mile on street tires. And get better gas mileage to boot than the stock engine.

Too bad its got A/C.....never worked right, was heavy, and did nothing but get in the way and cluttered the engine bay. Oh, if only it were an SD 455
