UPDATED REVIEW: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sGebYWZ5fa1_fLs ps. There have been some reports of Lagom Mini’s stalling with espresso grinding use. I can’t speak to this as mine has never stalled - even grinding at is finest range. I hope to share more about this in the future but I’ve gotten word from option-O that this doesn’t happen to every unit and that they’re planning to fix this in the near future. But please be aware this is something to consider.

Great to see so many options for budget grinders these days. Back when I first got into home espresso 8 years ago, the Rancilio Rocky was considered the only budget option and the Mazzer Mini was the gold standard (I opted for ths middle road with the Baratza Vario). At the time, I thought someone could make a lot of money by designing an affordable, well designed grinder with a good burr set.

Man Kyle, you just killed it! Awesome. This will be on my late mail to 🎅. And I prefer splitting my double shots in 2. 1 for pure espresso, 1 for a cortado. So yeah, dairy is my go for when I want to enjoy pushing a coffee to its full spectrum. Btw, my 1zpresso JX-pro could grind 18-20gr espresso in 40s, and I like the feel of crushing the beans, just a personal thing. So 30s is definitely not long. It's okay as long as the grind quality is excellent.

As someone who participated in the early trial in the Lagom Mimi 38mm, Yes you can grind espresso from mini and motor is rated for that. I asked the factory why does not say espresso on that is because it will take about 1mins30 second to grind for one dose, and they don't want people buying that for espresso and complaining about 1mins30seconds grind for espresso

The burr chamber design is shared by other small conical burr grinders, very similar to old isomac grinders that also use 38mm burrs. A weber style tumbler fits perfectly on top of the lagom mini and can be used to dose beans into it

My primary coffee drink is espresso with oat milk. Filter coffee I drink black. I think the Lacom Mini will be added to my list of possible grinders in the future. Right now I use the grinder built into my Breville Barista Pro. I like the design and small size factor of the Lagom Mini (in addition to all its performance pros). I make 1-2 drinks a day on my espresso machine so I think with my lower usage this might be an interesting option. Thanks Kyle for your great content!

Very good review! However I've already pre-ordered on Nov 2021 a (Eureka Oro) for my mom which she received last week so 5 months later as the first batch was said to have a really bad quality control. The one she received seems to be pretty good so far, and that pre-order saved a significant amount of money, being 850$CAD instead of 1050$CAD! As for me, I have a (Ceado E37SD) which is significantly bigger and pricier but what surprise me the most is the Oro doesn't even need RDT or a Brush to remove all retention and barely has any static while for my Ceado it is a must, otherwise it's a nightmare! I was considering at some point the (Lagoon P-64) at first but since it was constantly unavailable "backorder" in Canada and at least twice the price like about 2000$CAD while not even being 75-83mm, I ended up going for the Oro with that 20% saving. I gotta say though if it didn't exist, this new (Lagom Mini) would prolly had been my first high quality budget choice at ~515$CAD but again same problem... it's NEVER f******* in stock! As for the price difference between the 38 and 48mm version, it is soooo small that I don't even see a reason for the 38mm to exist to be honest. As for your milk question, I never take it with milk in the morning since I would puke if I'd take it with milk right after eating a huge cereal bowl for my breakfast ^^ I don't have enough time between my breakfast, coffee and leaving for work. Then later in the evening or if I'm off and can take it mid-afternoon then I'll take it with milk, either flat white or cappuccino usually. The only way to truly taste an espresso anyway is without milk so it's never a bad thing to take it straight too but only if it's quality and fresh beans.

This video was great, thanks for putting this all out there. Pretty much pushing me over the edge to pull the trigger on the mini. I'm upgrading from the encore, make daily filter coffee and the rare occasional espresso. I've been looking at the niche but the price point and its espresso focus have held me back. Sounds like the mini with the larger burrs is just what I've been waiting for! Dairy 90% of the time. I do love a good pure black coffee from time to time, but some light cream for me really brings out some character in many of the coffees i drink.

Having used a manual grinder for the past 2 weeks as I am travelling, 30 seconds sounds like a dream! Planning a move to Oslo where apartments are tiny, the footprint on this also looks like a dream! I grind on the slighty finer side for pour overs, and I am also in the market for a new automatic grinder. I often grind 30-40 grams for 2-3 people (500-750 ml) so there is one question I don't think you answered: what's the capacity on the hopper?

Great video! I recall that I ordered the 48 mm mini after seeing Joshua Jones video. Your video is spot on! For context, I have a Niche Zero I use for espresso, and my son has a Lagom P64 he uses for espresso, but my daily filter brew has been with a Comandante C40 Mark III. I've seen hacks online trying to add an electric motor to C40, and thought that might be nice, and seeing the mini video, it is how a C40 might be with a motor, yes? Knowing the quality of Option-O, seemed like a no-brainer to order the mini directly from Option-O and it arrived in short time (unlike trying to order a Niche). I only use the mini for filter coffee, and the flavor is very good, and the mini works as seen, grinding in about 30 seconds. Grind looks very uniform. I usually start the mini before adding beans for less stress on the motor and my inverted dosing cup sits nicely on top and I just leave it there during grinding to prevent popcorning. Retention is 0.0g to max 0.1g. And the mini's footprint is so small on your counter, it is hard to think of a "con" about this grinder. I much prefer it to Fellow ODE with its stock burrs. And no dairy here.

If I’m doing filter coffee absolutely no dairy! If it’s an espresso drink though I love using milk, but it’s got to be oat milk (lactose intolerant). On another note, how do you think this grinder compares to the Fellow Ode? Feels like similar price range and since they both excel at filter coffee I’m curious which is best.

I always enjoy your videos, apart from information, they have very good "photography" as they say Now, as for the fact of "which is the best grinder", as you mention on the video, one must choose based to the drink and roast prefers I use to be a classic conical heavy body espresso drinker, but as the years passed, I realize that I don't like heavy body and I want clear taste with crispy acidity, that's why I have a perfect aligned super jolly that soon will have SSP burrs on it Can't choose between high uniformity or multipurpose, for espresso always

Thanks Kyle. I really like this video. I use a comandante mk3 for filter coffee. 32 grams for 1:18 ratio for me and my wife for light days and 36 grams 1:16 ratio for normal days. Light when one of us starts feeling that anxiety thing. Recipe is always the same 64 for bloom then add 192-320-448-572. It’s a bummer that the mini won’t be able to make filter coffee for two and it seems from your video it’s for a single coffee drinker. Honestly speaking I’ve been hand grinding the MK3 since 2017 for the V60 and it’s time to go electric. Wanted to venture into espresso and bought a Flair 58 and SMH on hand grinding 18-20 grams on 5 clicks for espresso. I’m in the market for a great machine and I have been enjoying your comparisons. Thanks for the review, Kyle. This grinder with 48 mm burrs is tempting. Question: How noisy is it? Per your question: I almost always use cream, both to cut the acid effect of drinking too much coffee (!) and because the fat enhances both flavor and mouth feel. About one teaspoon of REAL cream per 10 ounce cup usually does the trick with reasonably strong coffee (18-20 g in aeropress). Too much cream overwhelms the coffee flavor. Espresso drinks vary, of course.

For dairy, depends on a few factors: Do I have it in the fridge? What kind of beans am I using? Do I like it black (or at the very least can handle whatever bitterness hits me)? Most of the time I'm buying cheap stuff due to being a student on a budget, so I usually go for something that's cheap but also as light of a roast as possible (if it means taking a medium roast over a dark roast, so be it) - and then if there's dairy in the fridge (or for me, some dairy-free creamer), I use it. If I don't have it in the fridge and if I know I can choke it down black, I take it black. Whenever I do have specialty coffee though, I'm not putting dairy anywhere near it. And as for if I'm getting coffee from someone else, I'm asking for cream and sugar unless I know the person making it is also into specialty coffee.

Kyle, the more I watch your different videos… Could you please consider moving your ”1 : 16“ neon sign a bit to the side - preferably to the left ;-) (1) It would become readable ;-) (2) It would not bounce into this other yellowish lamp light on the right what gives this nice moody light. (3) Would force you to come up with a better (?) solution for your obviously desired _back light_ to detach your talking head from your well chosen black background… I am not even sure that you would need an additional back light at all. I like your latest studio so much better than a year back. You are really good at having focus placed right on _relevant_ parts of your video and it is always a good choice to cut-in detail views of products that are crisp and sharp - as you usually do ;-)

New to your channel, but figured I'd comment. Dairy is a recent practice, like a week or two. Mainly for the fun of it or to spice things up. I've been dabbling with a milk frother and various flavors in a cream topping for filter coffee. But only when time permits to play around, not daily.

I'm looking to upgrade from a hand grinder! This was super useful. And in that vein, I think to people who're moving from hand grinders to electronic ones...30s is nothing. Especially if I'm not the one doing the work.

So it seems like the LAGOM mini is a electrified hand grinder 🤔, I think I would save up a little longer and aim for the Niche imo As for your question, no dairy for me. I feel the dairy will distract me from tasting the coffee origin and notes. However, dairy is a compliment for espresso drinks, since straight espresso is often way too strong
@KyleRowsell

To a degree - yes. But I think an electric hand grinder is underselling what it’s offering. And isn’t seen in any other grinder in this price range.

I have a Baratza Encore that I use every day for my Aeropress and Breville Bambino Plus maybe a couple times a month. I've had it for maybe 3 years and it still works great. I saw this Lagom Mini on a Wacaco reel on Instagram and because I'm a sucker for a clean aesthetic and a small footprint, I had to look into it. And I put either half and half or heavy cream in my coffee, because I like my coffee to closely resemble warm melted ice cream....

Wow, Kyle, you're killing me. I have an Encore for home use, and I've got a K-Plus for work, and my partner was finally giving me some slack for not constantly bombarding her with random bits of grinder trivia because I was happy with my life. And now, I want more coffee gear.... You're gonna break my marriage my dude! Lol, keep it up.

Depends on dairy, some days yes. Some days just require more velvety smoothness. I’m on the fence between this, the ode and the Df64. I mostly grind for drip coffee in many forms and recipes, my current grinder fails me for recipes like the JH pour over. I would however like a grinder for occasional espresso, my wife prefers milk drinks and her preferences weigh on this choice. I would prefer not to have two grinders, but I’m not barring the idea. I love the style and space efficiency of this little guy, but the df64 seems more robust in its performance. I’m also a avid tinkerer and have no problem modifying things to get the best from them. What are your thoughts. And as always love your content, your upbeat energy is infectious. Also love your shooting space, really dig the dark background and accent lighting on your coffee paraphernalia. Keep up the good work

Hey mike! Thanks for this thoughtful response! The DF is another amazing option. If you have the space and are willing to deal with its quirks it’s not a bad idea. Depending on where you are it will be more expensive than the mini. But the option to get SSP burrs is a huge plus. Really appreciate the kind words. Lots of work went into creating this studio space.

I’m forced by my gut to have no dairy in my coffee, but there’s so many good options when it comes to oat, soy and almond milk I feel like it’s no big loss. I also find that a good tasting soy milk really brings a good and interesting flavour to the cup.

Thanks so much for your content Kyle - I’m definitely learning stuff and getting clues on how to further my coffee habit. On the question of milk, I’m dairy intolerant, and have all my home-made coffee black. But I will have a latte made with, ideally, brown rice milk, if I can get one made by a coffee shop. But clearly that is a very different drink to my black espresso made at home.

Great video! Love the good budget options you have been reviewing. I personally almost always do flat white or lattes. I really should get back into the non espresso coffee world again, but I’ll have to get a grinder for it. I don’t like messing with my eureka settings. Stepless has its disadvantages…

By the time you add optional 48mm grinder, the price quickly approaches Niche Zero and I just don’t see anyone choosing Lagom Mini over Niche. I would rather compare these grinders to hand grinders from Ez Presso as these are what they are plus a mini motor attached.

Not true, it’s about $750 to get a niche and the lagom mini is $319 with 38mm burrs and only $55 more for the 48mm burrs for a total of $374.

I am new to the home coffee world and loving it. It’s like I never drank real coffee before. I am on the hunt for an electric grinder (I’ve been using a hand grinder for now) but haven’t been able to find an affordable decent grinder that can do both filter and espresso coffee. But this may be the one grinder to rule them all. Thanks for the review.

Ive always found coffee grinder speed comparisons strange. Unless you're in a commercial setting like a cafe, Does it matter how long it takes? I think a grinder is fast enough as long as it can grind faster than your water can be boiled tbh. Great review!

Grind time can be important for heating issue's. the longer you grind (especially electric the more chance you burn beans. 99% of the people can't even taste it if you would not tell them but hey, we like coffee so we have to pretent we recognize it ;)

My setup is currently a super portable one out of necessity, I've got barely any countertop space to work with :P. I brew espresso with a Flair Signature combined with a hand grinder and a NanoFoamer for the dairy filled fully manual espresso experience. The Lagom Mini catches my eye quite a lot because it's so compact! I bet there's going to be a battery powered version of this waiting to happen for the luxurious camper audience out there

No dairy typically. I only use dairy on dark roasts to lighten up the bitterness and open up the cup a bit but I also rarely buy dark roasts haha. I also think that 30 secs is not too much time to grind because thats the amount of time it takes to boil water in my kettle anyway. 30 grams is also a perfect dosing size for me since I don't need more than the two cups that will produce and my size 02 v60 cant brew more than 30g at a time.

Have been very blessed with the baratza encore for couple of years now. Picked the grinder up 2nd hand for 60 euros and it completely changed my coffee life. I did somehow pair a delonghi icona to it and I had enjoyed espresso brewing for quite a while. After working in a coffee bar and realizing how crippled the workflow was at home compared to how espresso brewing could be I decided that I would wait for something like this to come out and I had the cash to afford a setup that could cover espresso brewing at home done right :) P.s. I love pouring latte and I drink milkdrinks if I have the time but not enough for filter coffees. Espresso for me is to get caffeinated fast or to experience the coffee flavour bomb

Hey Kyle! Great as always my man. Before I got into the commercial side of coffee, I was the “I like my cream and sugar to be coffee flavored” person, who was more after the caffeine hit than enjoying the coffee experience. Since picking up this gig, I’ve fallen in love with pourovers. It’s my nearly everyday coffee method (with the Orea V2, which I was inspired to purchase after watching your video. Now half of the shop I work at all have their own Oreas). So I gotta have my filter coffee black. As for espresso drinks, I love actual milk but I hate the taste of even the best steamed milk. The milkiest I’ll go on an espresso is a cortado. Otherwise I’m just a big Americano guy. Definitely looking to purchase this as side-grade to my Normcore hand grinder. There are just some days I don’t feel like using a hand grinder, and this also has the added benefit of a bit bigger dosage weight. I’d love to see you maybe explore Lance Hedrick’s sprovers in a video some time!

Another brilliant review Kyle. Really enjoy your channel. The Lagom Mini is an intriguing product with its slick looks, metal construction and solid performance. Really look forward to your comparison video for all round professional home grinders. Even though the Lagom Mini seems like a solid product….I have my concerns regarding its long term performance especially with what seems to be a slightly underpowered motor. When considering the extra cost of the 48mm burrs, import/customs fees to have it delivered to the UK…I wonder if it would be reasonable to just purchase the tried and tested Niche Zero instead. Eagerly awaiting your comparison video. Keep up the good work!

Hey Joe! Oh this means the world, THANK YOU! A comparison won’t be in the works for a little bit. For now may I suggest looking into the niche? It seems in the UK that it’s a much better value than other parts of the world. Just my 2 cents

I love dairy in my coffee but during the week I tend towards an Americano to maintain intermittent fasting while still having nice espresso before going to work. Grind time would not be a problem to me given it's designed to catch the grinds in a dosing cup. Currently using an oooold Nuovo Simonelli cafe grinder w/o the dosing chamber (27 years old...from my parents cafe). I have to sit there holding the dosing cup while it grinds. That's more annoying than grind time! I think you asked this somewhere else - scale for dosing coffee, every morning.

No dairy 90% I agree with your points NZ v 48mm mini. I absolutely love my NZ because of the large turn dial. I never have to worry about how many turns to turn back when I switch between brews. C40 comparison? You addressed it briefly around the 4:20 timestamp in the video with the following statement: “while incredibly delicious they aren't delivering the same sweetness or magnifying glass like clarity of cups that I've produced from my C40 and K Plus” I guess we’ll have to continue to wait for someone to create a motorized grinder that can achieve the same sweetness and clarity as the C40 for filtered drip brew coffee, while not costing more than $1k.
