I think a small part of the reason why the furry fandom has so much more drama - and it's seemingly endless - is because just how absolutely MASSIVE it is. One furry could be a dude in his 40's, a red-blooded, gun toting, Christian, American man with a wife and three kids; another furry could be a 30-something lesbian woman who has gone to every single local furry con in the past 5 years; and another could be a 20-something, asexual, non-binary person who barely engages with the fandom at all and only considers themself a furry because they like Sonic the Hedgehog. Those three theoretical people might all be furries, but they live in totally different worlds from each other. All three could connect with each other or despise each other for any number of reasons; if they even are aware the other exists at all. And if even one of these people make a mistake, are revealed to be a terrible person, or any other negative thing happens with them that could turn into drama, BAM! Broader (online) society blames all furries as a whole. No furry is safe from being dragged down by the mistakes and/or crimes of others.

I feel like wherever there is people, there is bound to be drama. The furry fandom however seems to generate an incredible amount, and this can be for a lot of reasons: people outside the fandom just looking for a reason to hate furries more, the fact that the fandom tends to be a little too accepting at times making it easy for bad actors to slip in, and the fine line the fandom tends to ride on with what is socially acceptable in terms of sexual arousal. As someone who is perpetually afraid of being roped into drama , it makes things difficult. I just wanna draw dragons for pete's sake.

Imo I think the problem is simply the fact it is so massive. I've noticed a trend with bigger communities it seems like there is more drama, when in reality there is just more people. I do feel like a lot of people think anthropomorphism is an exclusively physical thing when it really isn't. Simba for example is like... more human than lion, honestly. Someone ending up with a Simba crush probably doesn't end up there just because they think "wow I never knew lions were this hot, damn" there's an entire human dude in that lion. At least in my opinion it's totally different to... those feral characters, the ones where the owner acts like they're on a mission to make it clear it's Literally Just A Dog.

Regarding this whole Splatoon incident, there's this discourse post about children expressing disgust about having to see nsfw art of fictional characters from a media that's targeted towards a demographic of kids (with the example of MLP in mind). A lot of the replies and QRTs dramatically missed the point as well as the context behind it and instead blamed the kids by saying "why are they in adult spaces, that's like giving kids access to alcohol", "why are kids even on the internet in the first place", and "where are their parents" despite society becoming more independent on the web and technology, and kids need the web to do school stuff these days. What exacerbates the problem is that you can easily stumble across nsfw of fictional characters by just a google search, even with the safe filters on. A good chunk of replies state how traumatized they were from stumbling upon nsfw and fandom content when they were like 10. I've seen a fair share of pretty strange video game flash animations featuring Mario, Mega Man, Pokemon, and Sonic before I hit my double digits and I had unsupervised access to the web, and I blame myself for getting curious and it's the reason why I'm desensitized to most fandom content now. That's one thing. It's another to go out of your way to subject your strange fetishes to kids. I'm all for having a freedom to express yourself when it comes to an artistic vision of drawing fictional characters, including nsfw, and I'm not here to kink-shame people if stuff like this is what they're into. But furries should be mindful of the intended demographics and restrain themselves. Don't complain that this is "violating" freedom of expression when kids and those who care pretty much have every right to express their concern. Parents don't need to supervise their kids over a game that's primarily for them. Meanwhile, do what you can to help children have a better experience on the web. Make it explicitly clear that your content is not for kids. Start tagging things. Upload your lewd works to adult-oriented sites. Use uncommon keywords to make it difficult to find so it doesn't appear in the search functions (this way, you have to actually look for it in order to stumble upon it). One of these days, Splatoon 3 is going to get rid of this whole miiverse like art post thing for the better because of this, and people are going to wonder why fans can't have anything nice. (I had to re-type all this out again bc it got deleted when I was trying to edit this :/)

It always amazes me how people will say freedom of expression protects their right to say whatever they want, when that... simply isnt the case. People have a right to post NSFW content, they don't have a right to post it *in any specific place they want to.* And theres a variety of common sense reasons for this --- not subjecting children to creepy fetish art is one of those reasons. (I'm preaching to the choir, I know, I just thought I'd add these facts to the record.)

@Vesperad08 ай бұрын
That really does piss me off. Not even as a furry (mainly cuz I'm not, just here to watch), just in general. It's like people have this idea in their heads that children are more privileged or respected than grown ass adults, when literally almost every single person alive remembers being talked down to as a child?? I'm a teenager myself and I still feel and get disrespected because I'm younger, adults just aren't treated that way. It's always easier to blame a hypothetical parent and act like the internet is just for pornography of children's shows instead of recognizing your in a space where children/minors typically engage. Cuphead, Bendy, FNAF, Undertale/Deltarune, Minecraft in general, The Owl House, Amphibia, My Little Pony, and so many more shows I used to watch/fandoms I were a part of had chronic porn. Even when the characters were children themselves. As a minor saying all of this I was never taken seriously or fought against, and I can hardly see that changing even as being a legal 'adult' (because in what world is an 18 year old an adult pls). It's either "you're too young to get it kid" or "yOuRe ObSeSsEd WiTh iT" as if calling out and recognizing possibly predatory behavior makes yourself one. A "reverse uno" doesn't work when it comes to predatory behavior, you can't call someone who recognizes pdf filia or says you shouldn't flood a space mainly of children with porn...a PDF file themselves. Like they'll do anything to avoid responsibility. The world has a variety of age groups and interests, and same ofc goes for the internet. Just like how there are spaces for families, only adults, and so on, there should be those same barriers online. Sure it's much harder to keep considering anyone can lie about their age, either being a dumb kid who says they're 65 or a grown ass person saying they're 15 to fit in with minors, but it still should be reinforce. You can...enjoy, I guess, your nsfw art. But telling you it should be separate from the main fanbase and not everywhere doesn't make someone "the actual ped", or a ""prude"". Which, yes, I've unfortunately heard before. Didn't know prude was a good enough argument, but then again to some of those people making an actually harmless queer headcanon (esp as a child yourself) is worse than drawing porn of a child. It may not be illegal or a real child being harmed, but nonetheless it's incredibly disturbing how people see a fictional character from the ages of 0 to 17 (18-19 in certain cases) and thinks that's hot. Especially when that character is a child/teen in every sense of the word-childish, squeaky voice, short, highly emotional, etc-yes those traits can be found in adults but let's not rely on whataboutism to change the topic. It's gross, and shows just how much society at large has no respect for children. They have to move aside for porn they can live without, while children and anyone else who acknowledges them as equal humans is mocked.

Not only is it objectively false, it's extremely disrespectful to the communities the gear was made for. And yes, the pup with the rubber husky mask complaining about Barq's decision is prominent in the pup play kink communities. Tbh he should know better. Edit: I have a stoned theory about the "is feral artwork inherently zoophilic?" question. A lot of millenial and even gen x media involved feral anthropomorphised animal characters. Just about every Disney movie involving animals, and multiple Don Bluth films featured feral characters with human minds. From what I've seen with newer generations, there are much more humanized anthro animal characters featured in influential films and media. Even media for very young children has leaned more toward humanized characters. Older generations grew up connecting with anthro feral characters, so are more likely to see them the same as humanized anthro characters.

Minors are something of a lead bullet to the fandom. It feels like there are some people intentionally encouraging minors to join the fandom - which of course, any puritanical child encouraged to do so WOULD call out people for adult content. On the other side, conservative minded minors who entered the fandom by some other route only to reject it, might definitely start going a bit nuts and claiming that a person owning a character having any animal qualities at all is a zoophile. Or worse, a converted zoophile (of which there sadly ARE minors) might start going down that route to justify their twisted mental state. I don't mind minors wanting to join the cleaner parts of the fandom (they do exist... bit hard to find though). But there should be more effort made to keep them out of the adult side. I say that as someone who joined as a minor myself. I can't confirm that I myself would have stayed in clean areas as a teenager if they existed (this is like, 20 years ago, they did not), but I do agree there should be bigger barriers to stop kids getting in. Because hooo boy was I too young for that shit. The most minors should have access to is cute, clean romances, not full on hardcore sex.

Furries: get heavily influenced by big corp animations like "Lion King", "Zootopia", "Bad Guys", "Pokemon", "Brand New Animal" etc. Also furries: passionately hate corporations. _Delicious irony_
@Vesperad08 ай бұрын
You can still hate anything corporate while liking some of the stuff they push out. Because believe it or not, beyond the people who only care about profits, there are people in corporate spaces who want to make entertaining and good media. Acknowledging their work, creativity, and so on doesn't make you a hypocrite, because oftentimes what people hate about anything corporate is the fact that they try to play themselves as humans, not companies. Whatever's relatable they dip their toes into, and pretend to be "one of the kids" for profit. When people say they hate capitalism or corporations, they're not talking about the people working at the bottom rungs or the ones who have no choice but to work for a shit company like disney/whatever else, they hate the ones on top. The ones who don't care about good stories or respecting people beyond doing what they can to suck the money out of a pocket.
@ophois92658 ай бұрын
@@Vesperad0 Corporations, in this day and age, are the entities that possess enough of the finances and will power to gather giants of art and animation like Aaron Blaise together and make the magic happen. Arts, especially fine arts, cannot exist without proper financing and support, and right now, one of the main patrons of art are big corpos, so they create a trend in animation, design and even modern fine arts. Without Disney, people like Blaise would probably create academic wild life drawing and painting, and your "beautiful" fandom would never have an opportunity to parasite on the Disney corporate art style. It's not like it's just an average Joe who creates this stuff for you. The average Joe is able to create these cartoons in a certain way, because the big corpos make the proper creative environment for those Joes and give a vector to art and animation in the first place. Of course, it's hypocritical for furries to bark at them, because without big corpos your fandom would remain fruitless, for it's big corpos who allow these art styles to emerge in the first place, whether you like it or not. Want to prove me wrong? Tell me, what art style did furries create since 80s that became a popular mainstream approach to draw cartoon animals? The way how furries draw is just an amateur attempt to imitate the art style from big corpos, not vice versa. Of course, when corpos grow too big to fall, they start to milk their own franchises for profit, while making stupid decision after stupid decision in the process. But unless any catastrophic social shift forces capitalist system to become a part of history like feudalism, slavery system and barter relationship, you will not have any source for your fluffy experience elsewhere, because who can pay top creators makes mainstream trends in art, animation and music.

It’s really funny you mention Splatoon because I’ve got my own mini stories: On the first couple of days alone I noticed a lot of bara(?) furry art EVERYWHERE- even depicting more questionable expressions and ambiguous messages. Normally I’d just brush it off/ignore it but what if I had my younger siblings or cousins around y’know? Secondly, just yesterday I saw voluptuous art of flareon and vaporeon on one of the walls of the hub and I was so taken aback I just had to tell a couple of my homies. It’s just so out of place for probably one of the most kid-friendly games around currently and seems really questionable to me

Here's the thing: Your kink is not my kink, if you have a furry convention that overall is meant to be a community event, you shouldn't have any kink or fetish there because the public can not consent. This includes baby fur and vore. Also, the furry fandom, from an outsiders perspective, seems equally accepting and hateful. It seems like things that shouldn't be allowed is swept under the rug and kept on the down low but then some of the most basic things is brought into question and debated for weeks
@Vesperad08 ай бұрын
I feel like that should be obvious. And not conflated with kink shaming, because an actual kink shamer wouldn't even acknowledge the possibility of people having different kinks including themselves...and that there is a major difference between kinks and fetishes-a kink you can enjoy sex without, but a fetish is required. Therefore, excluding kinks for a community event shouldn't be a problem. You can't have younger (minor) furries or people in general alongside people showing kinks or whatever it is. Even if kinks have a long history of being shamed and discriminated against, the right to harmless sexual freedom doesn't mean putting it in the same space as minors. That's not a "virtue signal", "prudish", or even "stupid" thing to say. I'm literally a child in terms of human biology, younger than 25, and I will continue to say this in and outside of furry spaces because god why is this a debate. There's always a time and place for things. Spaces reserved for children and their parents, teen hangouts, retreats for the elderly, adult clubs and whatnot, everyone has a space for them. If you want to make a community event, you have to consider all of the parties and ensure that whatever is 18+ or 21+ is kept far away from kids. That's not teaching kids to be discriminatory or anything, that's just knowing AGAIN there's a time and place. Kids will learn about sex and stuff, beyond the biological/reproduction parts in school or by parents, hopefully not by anyone else. If there must be a kink thing somewhere, have it, but as always where there isn't going to be any minors or really anyone who doesn't want to see it. At least then there's a defense against a minor who wandered in leaving their parents actually responsible. Parents fuck up a lot, but we can't blame them for everything when the rest of you are a bunch of adults who have control over their own actions. (Not you in particular ofc, just a general and ambiguous "you" to whoever it applies to)

Wait, didn't the furry fandom *not* start off as a sexual thing?, I was so sure it ended up being associated with that after news got out about weirdos during the early conventions back in like the 1960's-80's. My parents are furries and I'm 26 now so I might have a bit of a misinterpretation of how things started out since I myself am not one, just accepting of them.

Ok so basically furries did not start off as a sexual thing. They were just people who got together around their... Slightly concerning love of anthro charecters. But come the 1980s, the fandom itself did start very sexual. At the very first conventions there was weird sexual shit a plenty. for example at the first con to ever have people in what would become fursuits, one was made genuinely of BDSM gear. People were having sex, there were "pet auctions" (basically furry stripper garage sales), and one time some dude basically put an elevator out of commission by ejaculating all over the buttons. It got tamer and tamer with the passing years with new cons popping up and old ones banning bad actors from attending. But at the start furry conventions were a complete sex-travaganza, and everyone knew it.

That being said I did somewhat keep up with the goings on in the fandom. Like most fandoms it was all fun and games, then the next thing you know you're down the YT rabbithole learning about the absolute degenerates you share a common interest with. Its for that reason I don't hate furries, cause I've essentially been there. A fandom where most are 100% fine completely sane humans who like a thing, but then the degenerates come in and always seem to be the loudest.

I am glad I have found myself in a part of the community where I don't see any of this, and all the drama we hear about is just treated as if it's sitting behind a thick glass wall at the zoo. You can have a community without drama, you just need good moderation and nip the problematic people in the bud. The furry community prides itself in being very accepting of people, but you can't use that as an excuse to protect bad actors or very immature people. It's best to act fast before these people can set roots, or else it will only lead to drama. Basically to be respected first you have to respect others. Of course, you can't do that with a community at large, but you can do it with your circles. In my own circle we've been booting that kind of people and honestly it's turning to be a very lovely place, where all the lovely people can gather.
@Zephyeran2 жыл бұрын
My only 'issues' with babyfurs (and in turn other niche subcommunities) is 1. Understand that some are uncomfortable. They may shy away. That's not for you to force on them. But if they're attacking you directly, that's a different story, and you've every right to be upset. Admitting discomfort at a meet-up of babyfurs existing at a con you wanted to go to is fine, you're just saying you didn't feel comfortable seeing that in person and weren't sure how easily you could avoid that subculture by going and in turn are glad to not have gone. (Though they could've been kinder with their words, but it's still a fair enough opinion.) But attacking a specific member is crossing the line. 2. Clean up after yourself. Even in your own space, but especially when out at conventions and such. You don't live there, you know others don't like the kink, don't be rude and force someone else to deal with your diapers. Even if it's your kink, to know someone else is cleaning up after you, kinks require consent. I'd say the same with all things that could even be considered kinks, even if you only find comfort in them, clean up after yourself, respect that others may have trauma or discomfort of any kind relating to it, and 3. Make sure it's always between consenting adults. You can make all the arguments for kids and animals being able to consent, but.. just don't. Please. It's not as simple as 'feels good, they're allowing it.' It's such a complicated subject that both young and animals just don't perceive in the same way and in turn cannot consent, so just. Keep it between adults. You can pretend to be a baby if you and your partner like that. That's between you two. Or whomever is involved like that. Pretend to be a feral dog too for all I care. Just be adults and consenting, *please.* Harkness test, y'all.

About the Zoophile/feral discourse. Zoophilia is a real serious topic and i'm not defending anyone who has gotten exposed as a actual zoophile. If you got photographic or recorded evidence of somebody caught in the act of doing something illegal, then you should honestly report it to the police instead of keeping it to yourself. However, What I hate about this is when it comes to the topic. How can you say someone is a zoophile because of the artwork that they do. Drawn pictures aren't enough to get someone convicted as a damn animal rapist, yet a lot of people seem to think it is when it ain't.

Sometimes I question myself why I associate myself with this fandom. Then I realize that the reason I stay is because I refuse to let these people win. If we want to make a change, then we need to stand up for ourselves and be willing to talk about these problems. Videos like these are what keep me in the fandom, evidence that there are people in here that WANT change. It may take a while, maybe even years, but I am confident that we will be able to stop this cycle. Also, I feel like because the fandom is so big, people often think “we can’t do anything”, but I don’t agree. No matter how large a community is, there is always a way to make a change. By speaking out against these problems, we teach others, not only the problems, but to also join us, increasing at an exponential rate. Let us work together and speak our opinions. Show emotion in your messages. Create guidelines, boundaries, teach others what is right and wrong. Do literally anything. Nothing is “too small” to make a change. For pup hoods, as someone who wears it non sexually almost all the time, I believe as long as you aren’t wearing any NSFW gear with it (tail plugs, non-accessory collars and leashes, harnesses below the waist, etc) it is perfectly fine to wear in public events. I’ve worn my hood to pride, and other events. Taken pictures in public, & have gotten compliments on it on a couple occasions. It’s a part of my identity and more of a comfort than anything else. Actually here's a story that happened a week ago actually. So around the area that I live a bunch of kids that have gotten into the furry community have started to wear their fursuits at school or some form for related product like ears, Tails, paws into their schools. Not only that they argue that that is a piece of their identity and because of today's culture now if you tell somebody that they're not allowed to wear something or be something you are instantly the bad guy. And that's not even the worst part the worst part is is these kids are actually growling, barking, and hissing at teachers in other students that give them any sort of problem or discomfort which then leads to more bullying by the teachers and the students which leads to more hissing, barking, and growling. This is why I say kids in general just should not be in the furry community whatsoever and once you hit 18 have a job and can pretty much be classified as a adult then you can be in the community if you really want to because now there is a school that's being made fun of because it has furry kids hissing in parking at teachers and other kids making them extremely uncomfortable which will probably lead to some major backlash sometime along here or probably has already started but because I don't really use social media has probably already started.

I’m not really sure why you’d want to use a leatherwork thing as a fursuit head base (other than it’s already dog shaped) A foam or resin base would probably work about the same Like a pup hood is a too fancy thing to just coat in fur in my opinion. They’re already made to be worn on their own and are polished n stuff.

Something else to consider might be the issue of consent. If you're going to wear it where children are present, or people who don't want to engage with pups or BDSM for that matter, you aren't giving them much wiggle room to say no because they probably wouldn't know that you're using a pup hood as a base for a fursuit. Since they wouldn't be informed, you may be crossing a boundary. There are going to be people who feel fine in +18 spaces engaging with you, but if they were in a place where the dynamics are more geared towards general audiences or family-friendly, they might not like you in that instance. From what I've seen, pups and kinksters/fetish people have a hard enough battle as it is since they get branded as pedophiles (or other things) sometimes. Especially with pictures of pups interacting with kids...like The Kennel Klub. But if you're keeping it in spaces where pup/critter stuff is allowed, then it's just the matter of practicality. I can guarantee you at least, fursuits are already sweat machines. 🤣
