Lake District Walks | The Fairfield Horseshoe (an 8 Wainwright walk)

By popular demand, on a cold and windy, but gloriously bright day in October 2018, On Y Va Films tackled the mighty Fairfield Horseshoe near Ambleside in the English Lake District, to do eight Wainwright hills: Nab Scar, Heron Pike, Great Rigg, Fairfield, Hart Crag, Dove Crag, High Pike and Low Pike.
The people are Tish and Neil, and the dog is The Mighty Jess™. We stayed at the Rydal Hall campsite (www.rydalhall.org/stay/campsite) but it is easily accessible from Ambleside, Rydal and Grasmere. There are buses to/from Ambleside (the 555 and 559) or there's the Pelter Bridge car park nearby: goo.gl/maps/A7KQqnyukgsAnBCQ9

Thanks guys. Did this walk yesterday - the weather and the views were wonderful. Especial thanks for your advice that the bad step can be avoided by skirting around it - we were very happy to do just that, and several other walkers were happy to have that explained to them as well!

Great walk chaps. We did this yesterday and you’re right about the final walk down from the last 2 pikes being very long! We started and finished at Rydal Hall and boy we were glad to see our car and take off our boots! Stunning views from Fairfield.

I am really enjoying working through your videos. As i have a week booked staying in Ambleside in late March you have inspired me to take this route on, looked fantastic. The only decision now is walking clockwise to end at the Golden Rule or anti clockwise to end at the Badger :)

It's animated with Motion - not a direct recording of SatNav route! The OS are really good about allowing their maps to be used, with permission.

Hi Paul. Thanks for the message. It is a pretty straightforward walk, without any scrambling (provided you avoid the bad step at Sweden Crag - see map of the easier way down, at 15:00 in the film), but it is long - a little over 10 miles. On normal days (when it isn't frozen) the eastern side of the section from Low Pike to High Pike can be boggy. There is another way up from Grasmere, via Stone Arthur, and alternative ways off, into Ambleside. Although we had a clear day for it, the summit of Fairfield can be tricky in the fog, so careful navigation is important (as ever!). We hope you have a good walk - let us know how you get on!

Which way do you think is best? Clockwise or anti?

It's probably a question of if you prefer a gentle start, or not. Clockwise get's the steeper slog over and done with, so it has that to recommend it, but it can be a bit much first thing in the morning. Either way is good, although for some reason we seem to go clockwise more often than not! Hope you enjoy!
