Do you recommend heavier lures for further casting? I've played with my spool tension and brakes to try and get it out there, but for some lighter lures it still doesn't get out as far as I would like. Or do you suggest a longer rod for better casting?

Longer rod, lighter line and a quality reel are the best way to get casting distance. Also make sure the lure weight rating on your rod is right for the weight of the lure you are throwing

All things being equal, a heavier lure will cast farther based on physics. There is some stuff you can do to offset that, which Paul covered. You need higher launch speeds to compensate for the lower mass and all those things do that.
