Could the Lakers move up in the draft? Who will they target and how can they get it done? Plus D'Angelo Russell's best bet may be LA, and a big weekend for JJ Redick...

It's ironic that the Lakers and the Blazers have never traded with each other since they're in the same predicament: teams run by family members after the founding owners who bought the team are now dead. And run by front office executives who have no real power to make trades or draft without interfering third parties input: the Rambis' for the Lakers and Bert Kolde for the Blazers.

Who knew it would take Matt the optimist to hold the lakers front office accountable. Trevor Always Always gives them a pass or brushes it off.
@mckinleywebb591012 күн бұрын
Matt is right. The NBA has changed the game so that competitive balance is its primary goal is to keep things interesting for the fans by ensuring that each season, every team has a chance to win the title. The Lakers have failed to completely adapt the new NBA model. To achieve this competitive balance or parity, the League has had to implement a number of rules and regulations like a salary cap, multiple layers of taxes and more freedom for players to move if it is in their best interest. This goes against the model from Dr. Buss day when you could stockpile talent and players like Mychal Thompson, McAdoo and Glenn Rice who still had plenty to offer were your 7th and 8th rotation players. It would be nearly impossible to have a team like that today, unless you had unrealistic luck with draft picks and players took less than what they were worth to come play with your team. In 2024, you could not fill a team with prime, Magic, Worthy, Wilkes, Kareem, Byron Scott and Cooper, unless you wanted to pay $300 Million in taxes. Today's model is close to the two star and good role player-built roster. Also factor in elements that derail teams from repeating from year to year: Free Agency, Trades, Injuries, other teams improving and becoming more competitive as well as complacency, and essentially teams are all in the same situation. It comes and goes in waves for individual teams. Again, this is by design and what the League has envisioned to keep fans engaged. Average winning teams are going to win 48-58 wins per season with two making it to the Finals. The Warriors may be the last mini dynasty we see. For the most part, this is good for the League and fans, especially those in small markets. The problem with this new NBA, being harder for extended success is that It's more magnified if you're the Lakers and the expectations that come with that.

Just hire a damn coach already. Interview JJ Sat and hire him. The player moves are more important. Whatever they do, they have to address their 2 major problems from last season.....Defense and Rebounding. They need size, length and more athleticism. I prefer them going for a 3rd superstar. You trust this management to focus on developing players? It's about developing the RIGHT players. Also they are too cheap to be all in.
@MBeano13 күн бұрын
There is an inherent contradiction in the JJ coaching conversation here. Lakers criticized for being too safe/sticking to what/who they know. (which has merit), while at the same time being down on JJ for being an unknown risk (in isolation, this also has merit). However, together, they contradict each other - JJ is an unknown risk (and this IS a main criticism on him that has been called out here), Yet if you want the Lakers to step outside their own bubble, that means taking risks.

As a Lebron supporter, I think they should focus on trying to salvage their future. They’re not winning with or without Lebron anytime soon unless they change this owner/front office. They only won in 2020 because they got lucky Kawhi chose to go to the Clippers. Some big moves need to be made for this team to be genuine contenders again and it’s all around the franchise.
@CalobAdamsInfamous91312 күн бұрын
I just don’t think the roster is that far off and you really can’t make big moves with the new cba. I’d definitely trade DLo and maybe a future first for an impact player but nothing other than that unless the return was worth it. Go get a big who can move their feet in the first round or Ron Holland if he falls then get Bronny in the second round. See about DeMarr, Kelly Oubre, O’Neale and Heild in free agency and then see what DLo does to see if you can move him. Gotta nail the coaching staff and develop the young talent

I say it’s less about us having Lebron and more so about the fact we have two top 10-15 players on our roster and there’s honestly no excuse for us to be in the position we are. Pelinka and buss/the current lakers front office may be one of the few teams in the league incapable of building and SUSTAINING a winning culture with two players of this caliber. I also wouldn’t see the point in drafting another guard if what we need is a big in a draft that has options at that position.

As a Lakers fan I am going to admit I have no idea how to improve this team moving forward. I’m just blaming and pointing the people who work for the Lakers from coaches and management. This franchise had the greatest GM in Jerry West calling the Lakers a 💩 show. If the great Logo says that I for sure can’t dispute that. Lakers gotta find the right people who have proven their resumes to steer this franchise in title contention if not playoff contenders. I said that and Rob did create a championship team in 2020. Of your going to trade at least get some player's who can play. Me myself would have traded Bron, as much as i like him. We need younger player's look at the league how it's changing and the Lakers can not keep up. He's going to be what 39 or 40 man thanks a lot of miles on his body. Even though he takes care of his body better than anyone in the league. But for the sake of the team the lakers have to get younger and with some vets and bigs. If this is AD team build around him not Bron who probably will retire next year after playing with his son. Come on Rob and Jennie use your thinking caps.
