I really like how they portrayed Paul's death. We don't see him getting hit, we don't his epic last words... He just dies. And then his comrades burn him and go home in silence. We don't even hear Rudy's thoughts the entire time. It was spoiled to me, but still made me feel a lot of things. And the twist at the end is just heartbreaking

The thing that happened and why Rudy was so distracted was that the Hydra realized that he was the biggest threat and was swinging it's severed necks wildy in all directions and Rudy's eye only works on what directly in front of him and unlike everyone else he doesn't have superhuman speed and reflexes, just look at how Paul was out doing Rudy's Demon Eye, this was the danger of a mage fighting close quarters.

In the LN when Rudy has to be saved by Paul it is explained that he wasn't able to understand what was happening because the Hydra started to go crazy lashing out at random and his demonic eye was showing him what was going on, but the Hydra was way too big to make sense out of what it was doing, that's when Paul goes and takes the hit instead of him. I feel like here they made it look like he was way too distracted lol

trivia of Paul: His father and brother blamed him for his mother's death (her mother was weak in body but she would always make time to converse with Paul, who was rebellious against his father and bullied by his brother). He also blamed himself for her death. When she was weakened, Paul desperately looked for a doctor but was too late, so he regretted failing to save his mother. His aggressive reaction towards Rudy's attitude stemmed from there. So yeah, "save your mother even it it kills you" is Paul's childhood speaking to Rudy.

Not only that, but when he started falling in love with Zenith, it was because she resembled his mother so much. Her appearance, her kindness, her very warmth. When he told her how the only person he'd ever loved before was his mother, Zenith comforted him and started falling deeper in love with him. The anime didn't made it clear but the Hydra was doing some unexpected moves that fucked with Rudy's future vision, The hydra was using the headless stumps to attack flailing all over the place, which made Rudy not know what the heck he was seeing. So funny enough the reason he got gottem like that is because he was so focused.

It was a bit more clear in the novel, but Rudy got distracted in that moment because when it was on its last head, the hydra used a new move where it used the neck stumps as whips. rudeus was caught at close quarters, talhand and elinalise were too overwhelmed by all the stumps to tank for him (we see talhand busy protecting roxy in the anime), so rudy used his demon eye to look for the safest move. this distracted his attention away from the remaining head that was targeting him. they basically all got caught off guard when the boss made a desperate final super move at 10% HP. it wasn't really anyone's fault. a squishy mage like rudy shouldn't be in that situation in the first place.

The novel makes it pretty clear that the hydra only attacked with 3 or 4 heads. They prepared a formation where Elinalise and Talhand were supposed to protect one or two heads while Paul lopped off one head and Rudeus cauterised it. Rudeus wasn't supposed to worry about them, but with only a few heads left, it changed its strategy, messing up their formation. Also, DO NOT ask what the regret is.

A mage fighting close is a really risk thing.. Rudy don't have the speed, and the Hydra entered in rage focusing him, moving like crazy, the Eye vision got Rudy confused, the hydra was too big to understand the attack that close... Paul saw that Rudy was alive and smiled before passing away. Big respect.

Rudeus has not left any body or carcass he's encountered unburned. Zenith isn't mentally brain dead. her memories are intact and shes taking in things around her. But the over exposure to mana has left her in a mental fog. It's permanent. She cannot ever verbally talk or express emotions. She will never be able to live a normal life or function on her own. There is no cure. Imagine being in a coma but awake. her mind is trapped in her body with no escape or way to release. Is she really alive at that point? Or would it have been better to consider her dead and have paul alive there for his children? The only positive is that eventually when roxy and rudy have a child. That child will have roxies mind telepathy and she will be able to actually talk to zenith and relay messages. Rudy wont ever get his arm back and this is a life long emotional scar.

Rudy just didn’t have a defense for the physical attacks, which was why he needed cover. And the hydra started attacking with the burnt parts, which was a change in the attacks. Rudy was watching the one remaining head, got saved from a burnt attack, and then the last head came to kill him so Paul had to double back and save him again. Though it’s interesting that grandma just disappeared during that entire interaction. Maybe the novel contained extra details but like. 😭

From what I saw, it resembled what happens in gaming when you mess up by relying on a simple attack pattern - an accidental, unpredictable response. when there were only a 4 or 5 heads left, the hydra tried to force heal, then when there were 3 it went for the fire blast. When it got down to 1 head, it started just flinging around crazy and lashing it in every Rudy’s. Rudy’s demon eye only works for what directly in his eye sight. He really didn’t have any business in the thick of things with no superhuman physical prowess but that was the only way they were going to win. I think that the hyper focus on Rudy in that moment made it seem like he wasn’t paying attention when he really just got out played by lizard league over there.

On a note, Rudy had to cremate his body and crush his bones because if he didn't Paul would be turned into an undead or an esqueleton. So you need to do that fast. The armored warriors they faced last episode are an example of that, they were undead. Renmants from the Necromancy magic invented by Demons in the first Human-Demon war raged by Kishirika.

The Hydra was flailing its heads around wildly(which is something it never did before) and caught Rudy off-guard, so he focused on dodging them and was then almost hit by the head, he didn't get overconfident or anything and it wasn't his fault, if he focused on its remaining head he would have been killed by one of the stumps instead, it was basically an impossible situation that was kinda Pauls fault, as he was still showing off to Rudeus even against the Hydra, which lead to Rudeus' near death and Paul having to save him

After the cremation, I think that was a reference to the Japanese tradition of picking up the bones post-cremation. (remember the scene with Itadori from JJK in the first episode). Most Japanese people are cremated. Rudy isn't religious, but I think he does have some regret from not attending his parent's funeral in the previous world. I think there was a reason they cremated him to and Rudy was reluctant to this at first.

You’re forgetting that Roxy would’ve died if Rudy wasn’t there. So someone would be dead whether he went or not. In fact, Roxy *and* Paul likely would’ve died, since they’d be down a member for the boss fight, and they’d have failed to rescue Zenith. So he would’ve regretted *not* going, far more.

For the moment Rudy seemed "lost" and Paul jumped in to save him, he was using his demon eye to see where the multiple necks that the hydra was flailing around would land so he could move somewhere safely, but couldn't find an opening, remember he's just a very well trained "normal" human, the rest of them have "battle auras" essentially enhancing their physical capabilities.

When it comes to healing, you need IIRC King-tier Healing magic to regrow missing body parts. So his Advanced-tier magic healed his broken arm bones and reknit the flesh around them, but it's not giving him back his missing hand bones or the meat around them.

oh if you hate Rudy now, you'll hate him more, LESGOOOOOO. But Seriously, everyone has superhuman reflexes, Rudy doesn't. We see that the Hydra is smart, so it knew that Rudy was its priority. It also didn't help that it was steamy/smokey from the fire, his Clairvoyance only work to those he can directly see so the steam/smoke really didn't help him there. There's also the fact that Mages aren't really fit for close quarters, but Rudy and Roxy were forced to do just that. Rudy did get cocky near the end because the Hydra only have 1 head remaining, he thought everyone was taking care of it, but again, the steam/smoke didn't help with his awareness. Add all of those things together and we get the tragedy we have

So from what I've seen in comment sections, the anime didn't convey that Rudy was overloaded with information from his demon eye and that's why he froze up a bit. The hydra started to wildly flail around its headless necks in a frenzied attack, and the massive number of attack paths caused Rudy to lock up.

Paul was probably my favorite character. He was a legend, his outfit too is just amazing. I hope Rudy takes something as a momento to his father. His swords were unique, his robe or his armor. Rudy arm isn't a huge loss, Paul dying then seeing his mom isn't really there is what really broke Rudy. The ending scene of Rudy's eyes just widening, shows it all.

A lot of people pointed out what I wanted to about the portrayal of Rudy being confused when the Hydra goes for him, but another note on the cremation: I believe it's only mentioned in passing way back in season 1 at the beginning of demon continent adventure, but it is HEAVILY ingrained in adventuring culture to immediately incinerate all corpses, as otherwise they will reanimate as zombies (especially so in places of high mana, and the core of a high rank labyrinth is literally one of the densest concentrations of mana that exist naturally). Obviously it's a hard thing to do to your own team member, but a.) adventurers are uniquely calloused to that type of thing, b.) it might be hard to do to your father, but also imagining him being raised as a zombie is almost certainly worse, c.) bringing him back really wasn't an option since they still had to make a full trek back through the S-rank dungeon while exhausted & now down a member and + the burden of an unconscious woman.

We're spoiled a bit by anime like Demon Slayer using a free camera to show how the entire fight is going by stitching large scenes together step by step, but he wasn't just frozen; we can see that he was looking over at Roxy, and it takes a little bit of consideration to conclude that it's because his vision worked against him. His eye is amazing, but it also has a few major weaknesses in that it conditions him to follow patterns instead of reacting, it can only show what he's looking at, and it fills up his vision with phantasms of what will be at the same time as he's looking at what is. Imagine every movement of this gigantic thing getting relayed to you at the same time as its actual body - every head, every claw. It takes some thinking from his perspective, but it had to be damn near impossible to see anything when it moved, let alone figure out what it meant and then respond to it when Paul's the only one really keeping up. The rest of his squad was getting attacked by headless necks being used as flails, and while he's trying to figure out what the hell is going on and how he can protect them, the dragon's actual head comes in for the kill, and he's a mage forced into close combat. As much as he might seem OP against normal swordsmen like that student guard at his school, he's nothing compared to actual close combatants, and he's in the middle of getting overstimulated by a bunch of dragon necks flying everywhere. Paul, being the only one who's physically capable enough to keep up with a hydra point blank pushes Rudeus out of the way despite them being right in the face of an extraordinarily dangerous beast. Honestly, it's more impressive that Paul could do anything than it was surprising that Rudeus got distracted in a situation like that.

Despite his overwhelming power, Rudy has always struggled with situational awareness and focus in battle. And his inability to cloak himself in mana to enhance his strength, agility, and durability like Paul and Eris, makes him a glass cannon.

I save my Sundays for catching up on the weekends anime episodes and I watched this one first cause I had a sinking feeling they were gonna off Paul on Fathers Day, swear anime does this all the time. It really hit me harder than I thought that I couldn't watch anything else, held off the other episodes till tomorrow. I actually looked away when they showed Paul like that, it felt like my stomach dropped.

I think this is why Paul wanted Rudy to get more emotional. Obviously, being calm is a really good thing, but Rudy does have a tendency to be too calm. Like in the end there, he relaxed and let his guard down once he saw there was only one head left, and that resulted in the fuck up.. whereas when Paul calmed down, he was still emotional, and I think that emotion really allowed him to keep being in the zone.

Just to explain why they burned him so fast. Corpses inside labyrinths re animate into undead. The closer the corpse is to the core the more powerful undead it becomes, also the more powerful the person the more powerful it will become. So cremation of Paul immediately is Standard procedure for adventurers who are experienced at dungeon diving. Because they don’t know how fast the reanimate will happen, it’s safer to cremate ASAP.

He didn't get distracted, the in the novels it mentions the Hydra is smart and by the end of the fight it was gunning for Rudy incessantly as it figured out he was why he couldn't regenerate his heads.

To note, there was a ton more going on here than you think, why that letter was "Turning Point 3" and the meeting of Hitogami once more. The first two Turning points were Out of Rudy's control, this one... there is a reason why it is Titled Turning Point 3, because whatever Rudy chooses would affect what happens next. Paul told Rudy to save his mother, even if he had to die for it. Rudy is a mage and doesn't have the superhuman strength that Paul and Elinalise have. So, he was in a vulnerable position all fight due to how close he had to get, and he put his life on the line. Once the hydra went all out for Rudy, he was going to die to save his mother until Paul saved him at the last second. Everything makes sense. That is how the story was written; there is no "this is so stupid why didn't Rudy just dodge." Why does anything happen in a story? Because there would be no story otherwise.

Damn rudy had a whole realisation of getting a "you never knew how good of a thing you had until u lost it" type of situation. Rudy really lost both his parents in a sense. But fr to all the viewers and people that see this comment cherish your parents man. You never know what could happen. I have friends that are in a similar situation but only with one parent and still cant really recover from the loss. This episode really made me feel bad for the fact that zenith or paul wont see their grandchildren......damn 😔

Rudy only decided to go on this quest because he promised Norm he would bring back her mother. He'll feel he failed as a brother, not just as a son. That is really going to hurt. Now both Aisha and Norm are orphans. They, and Zenith, and Silphy and his new son will all depend on Rudeus, so he better overcome his depression fast. Maybe Roxy can help. So far, the only thing he has gained is reuniting with Roxy, so he'll really need her. Waiting to see what the Man God has to say, appart from "I told you so".

If I'm going to say, a real problem in the fight is, he doesn't even have 1/3 of his father's battle experience, he's slower and has less reflexes than his father, after all Paul is an expert with the sword, he necessarily needed to stay close, where his prediction shouldn't be useful, besides the monster was clearly focused on him several times and the last attack was out of his field of vision, I would say that the mistake there was that no one covered Rudeus like the other times I think the we forget that this monster is probably very intelligent, just the way he stops to look Rudeus in the eyes after learning that he killed his father says a lot

They had to cremate Paul right there, because if you leave a dead body, mana (especially because labyrinths have a higher concentration of it) will cause dead bodies to turn into undead.

I think the reason Rudy froze up is he was using future sight, but all the hydra heads were flailing about so it was all just a huge jumble and basically stun locked him with too much information

Rudy wasn’t distracted, the hydra started swinging its heads wildly (even the ones with just the neck). And while Rudy could see it with his eye of foresight since it was so big it was basically impossible for him to understand what he was seeing.

If I would argue, the only regret Paul must’ve had is not seeing Rudy’s first child or any for that matter. He was so happy to hear that Rudy is becoming a father and must’ve been regretting not getting to see his son’s child which hurts even more now that we think about it.

the Drama CD does Roxy's rescue from Rudeus' POV and the hydra fight from Paul's POV. He did have many regrets, and so many things that he still wanted to do. "Are the girls going to school?" "Will Lilia be troubled; what face will she make?" "Oh, well. It's better than Rudy dying."
