I said the wrong thing in Scotland. Today was day 10 of my British Isles cruise on the Regal Princess and we made port in South Queensferry. Our excursion took us to Braveheart country where we explored the site of the Battle of Bannockburn and Stirling castle. All was well until I said the wrong thing and was quickly scolded. Silly American, in the uk the unicorn represents the subject of the crown, the unique PERSON, thats why the unicorn has a crown around its neck which is chained, if you think about it your name and dob and social security number denotes your unique PERSON (Unicorn) so in that sense it is a very real thing and not a mythical creature at all. Edit: the lion or eagle denotes the royal family.

Babbel will tell you that American fudge is not British fudge (I say "British" because all four countries of the UK agree on this). What you bought was fudge. Caramel (carAmel) in UK is soft, even runny. Used as filling for chocolate bars, poured over ice cream icing for cakes, etc. Fudge is chewy cubes of deliciousness and is sold in every seaside resort and tourist destination

Oh, Scottish here. I think you encountered a favourite Scottish pastime called, 'Taking the Mickey' (not the mouse.) A little bit of gentle ribbing was involved there. On a more serious note, if you come back in September and head for the Highlands up around Glencoe, you may be able to see the annual migration and mating ritual of the usually elusive Scottish Wild Haggis. An event once seen, never forgotten and best viewed through the auspices of a fair few drams of single malt.

It's heartwarming to see the recovery of the Haggis population following the hunting ban. From almost extinct to a viable breeding stock ... in just a few decades is truly remarkable, given the low breeding rate, long gestation period, and high infant mortality ... its almost miraculous. . So, while the annual hunt was a spectacular (and often hilarious) sight to see ... the decision to ban it (controversial though it was) has been proven to be "guid and proper". . To my fellow Scots... Gaunyersel and be braw. Och aye the noo.

In the case of the wild haggis,always remember that the female higi ( pronounced Hag eye) is In season August to September and is in abundance more than the elusive male hagi.

Don't forget to run around the hill the opposite way of the hagi, that's how you catch them, they have two legs shorter then the other, one at front and one at back, so they go around in the same direction, by taking them by surprise coming the other way around they get startled and try to turn and run resulting in them tumbling down the hill

Being Scots I had a little smile when you described William Wallace as 'having passed away' before Robert The Bruce defeated the English at Bannockburn. His death by execution was 'Hanged Drawn & Quartered' which you may like to look up and decide that 'passed away' was a tad mild description.

My son was an archaeologist working on the restoration of the castle. It was fascinating hearing about it. It’s a beautiful castle. We do love our Unicorns. Tony -really enjoyed your coverage of my home town of Stirling and the history that goes with it.I was brought up in Bannockburn and then moved house with parents to property less than 500 yards from the Robert the Bruce statue. My children often called him ‘the man on the horse’ when they were small. The view out to the ‘cares’ ’ of Stirling is spectacular and so I am glad you captured it on nice day. Hey Tony, next time you do the New England & Canada cruise and stop in Nova Scotia (Nouvelle-Ecosse in French, both of which translate to New Scotland) it was heavily settled by the Scottish, in particular in the Cape Breton area. Hey Tony! A truly good interpreter at a historic site will stay true to the beliefs, manners and language of the era. My kids when still children were interpreters at an authentic pioneer village and were schooled in a one-room schoolhouse by a teacher who made them “wash” their hands in puddles in the garden before eating lunch. And they had to stand at their desk when answering a question. He also waved around a paddle just for show.

Tony, a few years ago as we arrived at Loch Ness, touring with our friends from Aberdeenshire, I asked if there was a beach. Upon arrival at a maybe 100 yard (based on Henry I’d arm length) I was able to find 2 pieces of polished Loch glass which I call Nessie’s tears (seaglass being referred to as Mermaid’s tears). My favorite castle is Dunnottar, south of Aberdeen, which has amazing tales of not falling during sieges and the rescue of the Scottish royal jewels. Respecting Scottish traditions and fables from the rest of the world!

Been to Scotland twice, 2nd time for two weeks going to islands & all over Scotland. When your ancestors are from there, it definitely grabs you. 3 sides of ancestors are from Scotland the largest from Aberdeenshire & the 4th from York England. And no have never heard that about unicorns while there. Hope you can dig into your ancestory. Mine go back to the 11th century & it's amazing! That Scotland got to you means you MUST go back. Unicorns 🦄 are a special part of Scotlands culture and history. I think most scots have heard stories from grandparents or other elder relatives growing up about them. Re your guide in Stirling: I have a son named Calum (also spelt Callum). Scottish pronunciation of the 'a' in the name is like 'pal' not 'paul' (some Scottish vowels are pronounced differently than in England).

You are on the bucket list trip of a lifetime for us. Both of us are Scottish/Irish/Welsh ancestry (almost 100%) and we've felt the calling to go "home" for decades. I'm so glad you're getting to go experience this and that you're sharing it with us. The Sterling Castle area is so rich with a lot of the history of the country and I didn't realize the look from the gardens was that fabulous. As for the scolding, if she's staying in character, that would be why. Beliefs were different back then, and the fantastical isn't that odd from the time. And, if you go looking, the Scots put them on everything because they became the country symbol, especially for royalty and peerage. We're going to need to look up a trip like this and see if we can afford it (even scheduling it out 3-4 years would work). My husband's going to be very jealous once he gets back with lunch and I share this.

Thats not why at all. It just comes from the old royal coat of arms which joined with the english lion with the union. As a Scottish person this constant obsession from some types with every cultural and historical feature being shoe horned into some anti english nonsense gets extremely tedious. Don got a 99! LOL Ok, this is strange because when you said you felt this connection to Scotland, I was yelling because the same thing happened to me on my first trip to Scotland in 1997. You’re more Scottish than I am; I’m about 25%, but I feel a profound connection to Scotland. I’ve never felt that way anywhere else (besides my home of Washington state).

Having grown up on the border of West Virginia, I agree there is a huge Scots and Irish influence there in the language, culture, and music. Someday I will go not Scotland to see for myself.

I hope the lady who scolded you was doing so in character. If so, she was clearly very good 👍🏻 I can tell you honestly that nobody here in Scotland, thinks that unicorns are, or were at one time, real 😂 I’m guessing we just chose a unicorn to continually mess with people for all time 😂😂😂

I went to both the Robert the Bruce Castle, and the Wallace Monument in 2006. Did you climb the 253 steps up the Monument? Did you see all the huge stain glass Knights that were displayed at each level? Did you take a picture from the top? The view made it all worth it to me!

Having worked at Bannockburn and Stirling, I can tell you not to worry, she wasn't scolding you in reality. They were performing living history and this can be done in two ways - one is where the person says 'I am dressed as..... and I will be telling you about...' (they can then go in and out of character), the other is where they are basically performing as that character, so they say things that they think would be true to that particular character. So if she's playing a maid from 500 years ago, she'll try to be as authentic as possible to what that maid would say and think (within reason, as some of the language would be archaic now) Although to be fair you would also get guides just having a bit of banter with you and telling you that as a joke. As to the truth about the Loch Ness Monster, the truth is .... we don't know what is and isn't down there, everyone has their own opinions, and we don't want to know beacuase the myth is so much better! It's our version of Big Foot.

From what I recall, the Scots and the Scotr-Irish settled largely in the Appalachian area of the U.S. Millions of years ago Scottland and the U.S. broke away for each other and if you ever see Autumn photos of both regions they look identical. I suppose, then, that Appalachia reminded the Scots of their homeland. The Scots, being a fiercely independent people, have passed that independence down to their decendents in Appalachia to this day.

Millions of years ago? A lot of Scot's moved to Ireland becaust their land was taken away from them for sheep. When the potato famine hit, lots Irish and Scots-Irish moved to the US. Many came as indentured servants and had to serve years of their lives before they could have their freedom here in the US. Does this clarify the situation for you?

The Chapel in Stirling Castle is where Mary Queen of Scots was crowned in 1543, at nine months old. The Crown had to be held above her head.

I got scolded in Scotland, too! I ordered a single malt Scotch whiskey with soda. They made it clear they wouldn’t serve it that way. Either straight up or on the rocks. Don’t feel bad! I am of Polish descent and visiting Poland felt the same to me. I was surprised to find that people looked Polish! I kept seeing people that looked like family members. BTW, happy to see they still put Flake bars in ice cream cones, Don!

I'm amazed they were willing to give it to you with ice. That's also considered a great no no. Cold ice completely masks the aromas and flavours of the whiskey. It should be served straight up with possibly a little bit of water, but that water should be served on the side and added as needed. In an ideal world the water served should come from the same spring that the water the whiskey is made comes from.

A few hundred years ago thousands of Scots migrated to Poland and vice versa. The two nations traded goods peacefully across the North and Baltic seas. Some Polish towns in fact were named after Scottish places. There are also thousands of present day Polish migrants (under the EU freedom to travel and settle rules)who have settled in Scotland. Here in the capital, Edinburgh (where I live) there is a huge Polish community, some of whom are my friends. The Polish are a people that we British have always warmly embraced, and we will never forget the part the Polish fighter pilots, flying Spitfires and Hurricanes, played in fighting the German Luftwaffe in The Battle For Britain in 1940.

I think most people in Scotland agree that the unicorn is mythical. However it is also the national animal of Scotland. Also notice that it is always shown as chained, even on the English coat of arms. Kind of symbolic of the current fight for independence. You were just unlucky to have touched a raw nerve. By the way, I live about half way between Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Most likely the interpreter was speaking in-character. We know they’re mythical today, but in the period that was being represented, they may have truly believed they were real. Thus, a stern correction was in order! 😆

Fight for independence my foot! The unicorn was shown as chained on the pre-union Scottish arms too. The unicorn in legend was almost impossible to capture, so, no doubt, depicting it chained on the Royal Arms was an indication of the power of the King. 0:52 - the Forth Rail Bridge (1880), important as it was, opened up and connected the east coast from Edinburgh through Fife and onwards, rather than routing via the existing network around Stirling - the rest of the country being well served by an established rail system.
