Thanks Chopsy for finally riding a new MT-09 🙌 I’ve still got my old 2017 model and the engine is the best thing about that bike 👌. I’d love a new one and hearing you sings it’s praises (when considering the bikes you’ve ridden and own), means it’s a very good bike indeed. You do know you need to do another middleweight shootout don’t you? 😆 Love the vids, keep up the great work as always 🙂

What a great review Chopsy. You nailed it. All yams have an X factor that's not on the spec sheet. I have both the MT10 & 09 and I think they are two of the best motors in motorcycling. The triple.wins every time for me on the grin factor 😊

I have the MT10 SP 2019 model and i love it but i reckon after having a go on my mates 2022 MT09 SP that it is the best pound for pound value bike out there. Unless you have been on one you really cannot appreciate at what a fantastic bike it is. It actually had me thinking about getting rid of the MT10 and getting the MT09 SP as the whole package is so good for the road. He recently had it remapped and he said its just an absolute weapon.

I prefer the look of the MT09 over the MT10. I actually owned one a few year's back and they are a hoot to ride with that glorious CP3 engine, but unfortunately the suspension let it down a bit, even on the stiffest settings it was a bit of a pogo stick but the fun factor was off the charts. When I purchased mine Yamaha were giving away a fully fitted Akrapovic system whithin the price which totally transformed the machine . So glad you enjoyed your MT experience Chops, awesome review as always 😊👍

@@jonathanmasterson3100update for you - I test rode the MT09 a week ago. MT-09 SP is being delivered in 2 weeks! Traded my 2019 R6 for it. The triple engine is immediately more fun on the road than a 600 screamer. Much more comfortable and miles easier when it comes to slow speed stuff (the R6 is a boat in comparison). I’d say test ride both as your taste may differ but the difference is night and day for me, and this is coming from someone that’s lusted over sport bikes for around 20 years and gave that life up after a year of it! The MT09 is just that good!
@Matt7R
@Matt7R 2 ай бұрын
Double update as I just realised my old post was about my OLD R6. I traded that 2003 R6 for a 2019 R6 in May. The new bike was much more crisp and refined but also less comfortable as it was even more track focused. So after 2 months on a modern sport bike I gave that life up 😂 just far too taxing on the body for any longer than 30-60 minutes to be fun rather than an endurance.

I'd even go as fas to say that the MT-09SP is the epitomy of refined fun. I'm saying this after trying the KTM, the BMW and the Triumph. I initially didn't want to like the MT-09 as I'd convinced myself that a 4.3in TFT was too small. But after being on the Triumph and re-trying an MT-09, I was staggered about how legible everything is on the Yam, even with the smaller TFT. The Triumph in comparison is just a mess.

I rode one recently and you are right, it has a LOT of bang for the buck. I would have liked a little more power, but it is so smooth and the quick shifter is so good, its still a great bike. I too found that the front end is a little light. Towards the end of my 1/2 day ride, I started really leaning forward to get some more weight on the front tire while turning and it made a HUGE difference. It really started carving through the turns better and leaned over more. I think it only weighs about 420 lbs, so yes, very light and very "flickable".

I'm in the minority but I sold my 21 SP. I didn't like it. Even in the video you can see how flat the engine is below 5000 rpm. It's a fast naked bike you have to rev and by time you have revved it you're reaching speeds where due to the riding position the wind is trying to push you off of the bike. Feels like a confused bike in that respect. I feel like coating finish on them is really cheap, on mine after 8000 there is white bits, I guess oxodistation? On the raw aluminium swing arm, looks to be under the lacquer, the engine cases also have that white stuff on them, the couple of Tracer 9 I view before buying the MT were even worse. I changed to an full Akra and the nuts were rusted to the studs, all the brackets for the radiator were rusty the only things that didn't show any weathering was the wheels. To me the bike is a P.O.S My other bike is a Triumph with 20k on it and it's all stainless fittings, hardly any rust on it what so ever. Yamaha just cheaped out.

It's so good, very very good. Except I have a few niggles: 3.7 gallons (14L) tank is too small. Give us 4.5 gallon (17L). The TFT display is not that well done. It gives all the data one could need (overkill actually), but it's not well done. Compare to modern Suzuki, for example. The switchgear is a tad......fiddly. That right-bar roller/button is a joke. The new Tracer 9GT+ has better execution on switches. Otherwise, well done, Yamaha. I might consider the XSR900 due to more high speed stability and it still runs cruise control. I can improve suspension in the aftermarket better than the SP.

Great review Chopsy, as always - thank you! If you HAD to buy a bike for fun and quick blasts, and the choice was MT-09 SP or SMT 890, which would you chose and why?

Got one in June as smcr broke again (imperfection in the head ) love riding the smcr but so unreliable, the mt09sp needs nothing really and love the std exhaust, I have added comfort seat and gilles rearset which made the gears even smoother, might get it mapped too heard they are quite restricted

Got the XSR900, same engine, longer wheelbase and looks ten times better than the MT range. Can't fault it so far, people complained about the looks, but it gets so many comments saying how good it looks. Also black widow does a full system which is pretty cheap and sounds amazing.

Compare this thing's specs to those of the Kawa Z900 (more HP, more torque, bigger fuel tank), then check their respective prices, and this Yama quickly becomes a Yama-ha-ha. You've got a brand-spanking new ZX6R for the price of an MT09. I've ridden the Z900 as a replacement bike but was really happy to be on my ZX6R again.

Got back into motorcycling in retirement after nearly 40 years. I’ve been riding since May 2023 and just worked out what sort of rider I am…I ride for fun. So now to my surprise I am looking at nakeds. Men and their machines…drooling over a swingarm in ‘brushed aluminium with lacquer’…hilarious!

I was after a new Yamaha MT-09 SP a couple of years ago, but there was a lack of supply due to COVID-19. The dealer had a second-hand standard MT-09 in stock, but it was the old model. In the end, I didn't go for it, and bought a new Yamaha Ténéré 700-but even that's gone, now! I'm glad I didn't buy the older model because I later found out about the handling, Neevesy from MCN did a good review on it, and he mentioned the problem. As you say, Chopsy, Yamaha have lowered the front end by 30mm, so it's improved the handling by all accounts. I'm going to look for a new bike in the new year-when it's cold and wet-but I'm taking my time this time around, which is always the best advice.

I'll probably be getting a Kawasaki Z900RS SE “Yellow Ball”, which comes with a Öhlins S46 rear shock, upgraded front shock, and Brembo M4.32s in the new year, I can't wait! I've heard Kawasaki have fixed the snatchy throttle, but others have said their bike never had one in the first place? It would be great if you could do a review on the Z900RS SE, but they're a limited model. 👍

@@gryphongryph I really do like how they look, but is essentially the same bike still. A slightly longer swingarm won't make much of a difference in how it performs or handles. But if Yamaha has done that, I wouldn't be surprised if they made other geometry changes such as rake too, probably to make it wheelie less easily.

I hope when the R1 goes the way of the dodo the Mt09sp gets a capacity increase to significantly increase power and torque below 5000 revs. I’ve had one now for just over a year as a daily rider and yes it’s stupid fast and I’ve managed to not damage my license some how. But my net one will possibly be a KTM or Triumph. Yes I don’t like the fuel gauge and the tank capacity also the high beam flasher is not easy to hold on. Might go down a tooth on the front sprocket next service
