It does 0-100 in 3.3s and I've seen them hit 11.2 on the 1/4 mile that's quite a lot of perfomance for a comfortable sports bike

You keep comparing the CBR650R to a ZX6R in terms of performance, but those bikes aren't direct competitors. A much more fair comparison would be to the Ninja 650, the ZX6R competes with the CBR600RR, not this.

@BGS Member Here in Canada it costs 1700 $ a year to put plates on the zx6r and only 660 a year for the cbr650r... the zx6r is a supersports bike and the cbr650r is a sport touring bike... its the exact same as the cb650r but without handlebar.

@BGS Member Not really, you have to consider that some would like a Honda over a Kawasaki just be cause they think Honda makes a better bike. Also there are some that like the sound of a inline 4 vs v twin. You should also think that there are some big guys that don't want a 300 or 400 for a starter bike as its too small.

I think this bike nails it for its intended market, as you say; the new rider or even older riders who want to step away from balls to the wall power but still love the look of a sports bike. Apart from the bits you pointed out like the rear end it looks absolutely stunning! I wonder what it would be like with a full system, remap and a suspension upgrade... totally pointless, but would be a fun sleeper bike!

I used to ride Kawasaki ZZ-R1100 and now considering this. I don't understand why people say "stepping stone" and "beginner" when referring to bikes because people buy what they like and can afford. There are no beginner cars or stepping stone cars, just small cars, SUVs, pickup trucks, etc. I think very few people who ride motorcycles consider themselves to be on some imaginary competition or scale where they have to advance and advance and buy more powerful bikes as time goes on, otherwise they will be behind when they keep one bike for too long. I might as well be mistakening of course.

First & foremost, nice review Chops. Really appreciate you paying attention to these types of bikes. I've said it before & I'll say it again, these middleweights are where it's at imo. Affordable, useable & fun. This looks a great "little" bike but for me, light weight & decent suspension are a must which is where this bike falls down a bit maybe. I'd be happy to pay a bit more for improvements in those areas. The sub 400cc market seems to be flourishing so I'm hoping that will have a knock on affect & lead to a middleweight revival. We've become obsessed with huge mega powerful bikes we can't use on the road & not everyone wants or can afford a 1000. Viva la revolution lol!

To me this bike is much like a 600 supersports from the 90s, a reasonable riding position, around a 100 brake, decent handling and brakes. The 600s got steadily more extreme, and eventually people got tired of the uncomfortable position and peaky engines and the sales figures showed that. When 600s were like this bike in the 90s early 2000s they sold like hot cakes.... they sold bugger all supersports in 2019.I'd take this over a new zx6 anyway, as I like to do miles on a bike! Also why do so many reviewers alway assume everyone want to "move up" to a thousand bike? I know people who went up and regretted it as its just too fast to be able to really use on the road and downsized back to a middle weight.
@Jonj57
@Jonj57 Жыл бұрын
Most riders I know always think that they can use more power, so they rarely stop at the 600's. Not to mention with how extreme the ZX6R and R6 became and the speeds they became capable of, the 1000 isn't the crazy leap it used to be (especially with power modes and restrictions). That being said I also don't know many folks who stick to the 1000's for long, usually people buy and get scared off within a year or so then go back to something more reasonable.

I upgraded to one of these from MT125 after passing my license. The screen is not the same as the cb1000r(unfortunately). I believe it’s limited to 95hp for the eastern market and it cannot be converted to A2 friendly if it made more than 95 Hp in standard format. It definitely needs more midrange grunt. Hoping a filter, flash tune and Akro will help there once it’s available, or I could replace it with something else but have no idea what. To my knowledge there are no similar bikes out there with 120 ish horsepower. Please tell me if there is. I’ve spent 6 hours on the bike in one day and I’m a middle aged fat rider so yes it is comfortable in the twisties but not so much on the motorway. Power socket: I’ve added it to my bike and to my disgust found out it’s under the rear seat so about as useful as tits on a fish. I’ve also added the comfort pack which has heated grips and a double bubble screen. The way that the dealer fitted this with black electrical tape is utterly disgusting. I would not bother. Buy an aftermarket unit and fit it yourself. Overall a great bike. Probably one of your best reviews Chops. Love the way you give it some!

I have yet to test ride either, but riding position and style-wise the CBR650R seems to have a lot of similarities with the Ducati SuperSport. The major difference being that L-twin engine. However it does have that 113hp and a lot more torque (+24 ft-lb). Selling my Speed Triple soon and I plan on test riding both of these but the Duc would have to be pretty special to be worth the much higher price and maintenance costs over the Honda!

Heard you make reference to the brake horse power comparing it to the kwak zx6r but didn’t hear you say the actual bhp on the Honda so had to look it up , 93.9 ,, one bhp down on my 21 yr old fazer 600 amazing , but no doubt a well built bike for those that want one , cheers Shane uk

I think this is a real mix up of bikes, full on sport at the front, streetfighter at the rear, 650 engine but inline four instead of the inline twin, with a bit more power. The seating is probably like the sport tourer 650's (like mine stock) but with slight more of a lean maybe?

Its a very enjoyable motorcycle to be honest. I tried one out for a half day and it was very comfortable (not like a sports bike) but there is a very noticeable gap in the mid and low range. Problem is Honda tuned this engine to be 95 hp so that you could have it on an A2 licence. Im sure, as Mr Chops says, that it could produce way more power and torque. But as it is it is very much lacking in power. As you say this bike is too much of a mix up, a compromise to be any good in any specific category: There are better options if you want an actual sports bike There are better options if you want a daily bike Sheep in wolf's clothing is the perfect comparison.

@@Stratocasterhead51 Nobody should really be thinking of this bike as a super sport, but it is between the 600 supers and the 650 sport tourers like my Kawasaki ER6f, and a great alternative to both. They have great power and more importantly torque for what they are. They look more like a sport bike and go like a 650 twin but with a 4 cylinder sound and a better top end. I know a young lady who has one and it a great all rounder in a catagory rigjt between the usual favourites. You and Mr Chops are right about the A2 licence being in mind when tuned, but I don't think that's a bad thing really, although not needed imo, it can easily be boosted with mods and a tune.

@@HalfdeadRider Oh i agree, it is in a different class to a supersports, more a cross between a sports tourer and a sports bike. Had i not tested the zx6r 3 weeks prior to the honda, i may have probably bought it, but the one that i kept thinking of was the 636 and its crazy engine. cbr is a sensible choice but the 636 is a REAL sports bike.

@@Stratocasterhead51 Oh yes, for sure the current 636 seems (I've not ridden it) to be a great bike, 636's are anyway of course, but with the gearing change alone it makes it even better I would imagine, I really must get a test ride on some bikes if I can without risking losing £1k that I literally do not have.

@@Braselton21 given the legal speed limits on most national roads i agree with you , depending on the RPM at 120km' p/h but I can easily live with an R3 or even a CBR 300 , 1 st price for me would be the 400 kawasaki

you cant really compare this to a zx6 tbh, this is meant to be replacing the 650f so its not an out and out cbr, think it got the R on it just from the looks. i would say this is a sporty sport tourer not a mid weight super sport. great bike though for the price and the level of quality you get. have been very very impressed with it.

I think the way the wheel sticks out so far since there's no cowling, that if you put a tail tidy on (shorter than the original) your going to get you're back plastered with crap when you drive it in the rain.

Let's just say I absolutely love this bike. I bought one not so long ago and have already put over 700 miles on the clock. If you ride it out to the limiter in the first few gears it really can get up to rather stupid speeds rather quickly eg. 80+mph in 1st gear isn't exactly terrible. It makes its power at 8000rpm, with a bit of smaller kick at 6000rpm. To get the most of it, you do have to rev it, but it's a very comfortable and enjoyable bike to ride. It doesn't exactly scare you shitless, but it can definitely put a smile on your face. For the price to me it's almost a perfect bike, the only things it was missing for me was a set of panniers and a double bubble screen to put the wind a little higher. Either way I don't see myself ever really needing to upgrade, plenty enough for the road that's for sure... Anyways great video chops. Keep up the good work
