Having owned both the Husqvarna 701 and now the KTM 500 EXC I thought I would do a video to help potential supermoto buyers decided which they should buy.
One thing I didn't mention was cost, buying new it will cost you more to build a 500 EXC supermoto than a new 701. Certainly something to consider!

What do you mean does the 500 exc need more maintenance?
@ericsson_motorsports
@ericsson_motorsports 3 жыл бұрын
@@ksr2513 Yes, the 500 exc wasn't meant for street use so they push the engine harder for racing purposes but that means that more maintinence is needed. The reason the 690/701 uses bigger engines is that they can detune them for reliability but still make good power

@@ericsson_motorsports ooow okay so if you want to ride it daily and don't want to take the engine apart every month you should take the 690/701.

Another great video, cheers! Having owned and ridden a fair few SM's I couldn't agree with your comments more. The DRZ-E that I used to own was probably the best as regards fun V hassle although the WR450 was a real hoot, top gear clutch ups off any small rise in the road! :-D The longest ride I had on the WR was about 170-180miles in a day(some of it off road on SM wheels) and it felt like I had ridden 3 times that, something like the 701 would have eaten up the road miles much better but I would take the WR for the off road sections every time.

Those 15 hour oil changes etc on the 500 are ONLY for when the bike is being used in pure competition, you have the same 15 hour hour intervals on a rally 690 if used in competition. For normal road/trail riding use it is nothing like it. In fact I met lots of Yanks (whilst doing the TAT on my 690) who had 10-15k miles on their 500's pistons doing 1k or even 2k oil changes when running them as SMC or Dual Sport bikes. Also on a 500 after running in it is very rare indeed to need valve adjustment either. A common misconception is that the oil capacity on the 500 is too low for continuous use. Not so, in fact the 500 at 1.5 litre has a HIGHER oil capacity per CC than the 690 at 1.7 litre and now the new 690 has almost identical BHP to CC and KTM are happy for 6k oil changes on that model. So chill out about all that high maintenance stuff, it is a myth, at least on the 500, the higher revving 350 is another matter. More important is to keep your air filter cleaned daily if you are going off road in dusty conditions and of course always warm the engine up patiently before thrashing it. 90 per cent of engine wear is generated in the warming up cycle. It is the idiots who thrash a bike from cold (or rev the bollocks off it as it sits on the side stand instead of just letting it tick over) who wear out engines and then blame the bike!
@axellness

Easiest way to change the oil: unscrew the bolt on the side that allows the oil to drain , works nice because the oil filter(s) are on that side too so the oil only goes down one side of the engine and it's easier to put it all back together. It's not like a car where you have to get under it and that's the only way to do it

Love your channel !!! For the records i had the exact same 2017 KTM 500 six days and i put 5000miles and 280 hours of pure off road use (no SM) with no valves adjustments, no piston BS ...not even a spark plug...let alone if you use it mainly Supermoto...you can even space out your oil changes. The only draw back of the 500 is long tarmac rides...it just plainly sucks there. Now i have a KTM 500 Six Days 2019 and i am doing supermoto conversion and mainly off-road (quick swap). This is the ultimate bike in my opinion.

LCR - what's your thoughts on the following? I'm thinking of getting a 450 SUPERMOTO over a 690/701. im only 5 miles from work and would only commute on it when its dry (which in surrey isn't often). i'm 70kg and 5'7 so the lighter bike was appealing to me. is a 10 miles round trip short enough if you don't mind the maintenance? or as it will only ever be a road bike...would you say the 690/701 would be a better choice?

Other than the oil changes and the valve clearances the service intervals are for competition use only. So if you are not bouncing it off the rev limiter or racing intervals will be longer.

Mine was out of spec too on the loose side (bought with 20 hrs on it). My opinion is that they come out like that to avoid issues if you're not checking the valves so often and are supposed to be re-shimmed after the very 1st hour anyway. After 100hrs the clearance was still ok...

I’ve got the 450 model and use Motul v300 15/50 and service every 50/60 hrs and the oil could easily do 100 hours as the oil is just on the turn. I’ve done 270 hrs total and just corrected inlet clearances from the bottom limit back to middle of spec where they were new. All green lane miles.

A supermoto engine is probably going to get a harder life than one used in an enduro bike. They do tend to get ridden and revved hard for longer periods of time. Supermoto's are for hooligans let's face it.😋

400 hrs on mine, all original, burns no oil and compression is well within spec. I check the vales and have had to adjust them once one the exhaust side and it was in spec but just. Have not had to adjust since. It runs better than a new 500 I test rode, only changes to mine is I removed the canister, exhaust end cap screen and added a bit of volts to the TPS. I had a 690 and found it was more maintenance work, if not in frequency then in complexity with extra sensors, and everything is hard to get to. The 690 motor is a beauty. As for 15 hour oil changes that's based on off road racing, banging off the rev limiter and running at max temps. Rolling around on the street isn't going to be anywhere as intensive as mud, sand and loose hill climbs so extending the interval to 25hrs wouldn't be a stretch at all. I've put 800 km on my 500 in one day of off road racing (17 hrs of ass beating - get a better seat with either bike )

yo lamb chop. you dont need to change oil etc like it says in manual cause your not racing or wearing out the engine in a way that need it to be changed every 5 hours. i had a 450 exc 2016 rode the hell out of it almost everyday and i only did services once a month or every other month. and not a single issue for the year i had it. because when you are on the road your not pinning all the time and hitting the revlimiter all the time so your not abusing the engine enough to where it needs a service intervall like in the manual. and i only went into the engine for valve adjustment once a year. same for all the bikes i have had on the road

@@Balomis I have not heard about this problems on bikes because they usually have magneto ignition (at least on old ones) so they start even without any charge at all, but maybe new bikes is like modern cars. On a modern car with AC dynamo you need a little current to start or else the dynamo will not work no matter how fast or long you try run start it. I have a few times run out of electricity on my old Mercedes 190E so bad that the engine stopped from lack of ignition when dynamo stopped working. But after fixing dynamo there was still a little current left in battery enough for it to magnetice the AC generator and run start successfully alone with no help.

@@a64738 Yeah as far as I know, pretty much all the fuel-injected EXC's won't start off the kicker with a completely dead battery. The battery just sucks all the juice from the kick so the injector and fuel pump never get enough. The XC's (non-road legal in Canada and some other countries) generally come equipped with a large capacitor that allows the bike to run without a battery at all. Many people mod this in, or carry a capacitor to swap in incase of emergency

in my experience with a husky501 as long as you keep on top of your oil changes and also change or clean all the filters OIL/AIR/FUEL then you should rarely encounter any problems or parts moving out of spec. But you will still have to replace and readjust parts more often than most road bikes, but no where near as much as the bike manual says.

@@LambChopRides I keep my bike indoors. I liked the idea of having something that was 105kg that I could just pick up and turn around. I have a 170kg MT-07 at the moment so the 701 wouldn't be much different in terms of weight and power so not much point changing to be honest.

@@HippoDrones You can get the SMR510 brand new. SWM was manufacturing them again in even the same factory as husky back then. They are called SWM SM500R (2016-2017). Everything is husky except for the gearbox (new one is better) and new plastics. But original Husky plastics bolt right on. The 2018 models is unfortunately quite different with abs and other shit. It depends on the spec you want of course, wheels start at about £500 quid, you can just space the caliper and get a larger disk to improve the brakes rather than a whole new setup. End of the day price would be similar between the two unless you go high end on the SM build

Last time the 690E/SMCR were for sale they were just short of £8k I think, so £9600 is a 20% increase but consider that the £ has dropped in value against the € by 19% since 2016 and the huge price increase is understandable.

I owned a 701, great bike, but, there's a but! Mine was nicked, my buddy's was nicked too. The problem is they are way too easy to start without a key. For me, it's unforgivable for the price that they do not fit an immobiliser. So I did not replace my stolen one. On that basis, due to the lack of the security fitted as standar on the road bikes, you may as well go whole hog and get the competition bike. Maybe convert a 450 Husky SM for road use? What about a used 511?
@LambChopRides
@LambChopRides 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah they are ripe for being nicked, sorry yours went :-( The 450 husky is great, but you would have to road register it which is tricky and expensive.. .and it has a 16.5" front wheel so road tyres are tricky to find in that size.. Never tried the 511, really want too!!!

My 2019 KTM 500 EXC F does about 0.55 Liter per 10 km of riding giving it a range of about 160 KM (100 miles). Driving that far on a bike like that is tiresome because of the vibrations and also because of the hard seat.
