Old tractors are lovely things. I live in an area of New Hampshire, USA, where I see them daily, there is a static Farmall F-20 on steel tires about five miles from me, those things were built for the ages.

What a wonderful video Iain! I am a tractor enthusiast, I worked on a farm 45 years ago driving Ford 4000 tractors, then I got a job on the council on the Parks Department where I drove David Brown tractors and a Leyland 154 tractor. You need to double declutch on those old tractors. If you are not pulling a trailer or an implement you could put it into top gear and pull away. I drove a David Brown tractor in 1984 which had a semi automatic gearbox! I have fully enjoyed your video and in your own words Tickety-Boo!!!!

Fantastic video- another classic tractor fan is born! Italian agriculture recovering after war needed smaller machines for small farm - we had the Little Grey Fergie in the UK. No surprise that are not many larger machines. Italy didn’t want to import foreign made machines - so the incentive to encourage home built tractors. Built to put power on the land and little thought for operator comfort. Compared to today’s machines very primitive but they did the job and far easier than what went before- human/horse labour. When it rained you got wet and when the sun shon your brains were boiled out. Very well engineered machines.

Tractors are so evocative, I can see why people are drawn to them. Something about the function far outweighing the form still leads to lovely looking pieces of machinery. Some country parks and publicly accessible farms, where kids can get up close with the animals, have passenger carts that are towed around by tractors. I imagine this gorgeous little gem of a tractor doing something similar. Around Goodwood, perhaps? Who wouldn't want a ride behind that 4R, wherever it was?

The first vehicle I drove, and drove year after year as a kid into my teens, was a tractor down here in NZ. A Massey Ferguson 135 it was. From later 60s to mid 70s. It had a hydraulic wooden tray on which I sat many a time with hay bails, stillborn lambs, and doomed sheep. Driving that thing was the best thing ever and I have loved tractors and desired one ever since. Just need a bach and a boat to use it.

Your rather 'jolty' ride reminds me of my first drive of an early 1970s Fiat tractor that was fitted with a front-end-loader attachment. The tractor was capable of a heady 15mph at full throttle. At that speed I traversed a railway crossing that effectively ejected me from the sprung seat - only just remaining on the vehicle by vigourously clutching on to the large steering wheel. In motorcycle (Barry Sheene) racer parlance, it was akin to a 'tank slapper' - at which point I came to the conclusion that 10mph on public roads was a sensible upper speed limit for a vehicle that relied soley on tyre deflection as its 'springing' medium.

First real machine I ever drove was an Allis-Chalmers tractor on my grandfathers farm, which in size and apparent driving experience appears about the same, at age 13 in 1971. A hand throttle which was a lever on a toothed plate mechanism, and a crash gearbox, which though capable of shifting on the fly, really unpreffered that. I was forcefully told to stop before changing gears.
