If you have a plan stairs remodel in your home, installing laminate flooring on stairs instead of carpet, you should know how to do laminate stair tread and riser installation. You can use any size laminate board for your stair risers. Please note: installing laminate stair treads you should use laminate boards that fit the whole length of the tread. We have two types of laminate stair nose - flat connection with tread and overlap. In this video, I am using overlap stair nosing. This overlap laminate nosing fits any type of laminate flooring.

I've found it a lot easier to work from the bottom up so that way the cut at the back of the tread is hidden by the riser. Also you can nail the tread at the back to keep it in place as the glue dries and hide the nails with the riser.

Hi, why I am doing stairs from the up to down, because the joints between rises and treads looks more finished and you can’t see the gaps between rises and treads when walking up and down. Also I don’t like stepping up on the fresh made stairs. But all types of installation works if you’re knowing what to do.

Can I still use liquid nails or do I have to remove the backing first? or is there a special glue to use when the planks comes with underlayment attached? Thank you

We have similar laminate as in the video, in a newly constructed house, and the nosing has a definite shiny appearance (and feel) compared to the treads. In one place what appears to be a protective film is coming away a bit where it must have been nicked by appliance moving or something. Is that really part of the nosing construction or did the installer forget to remove a protective film? Doesn't look like it would be easy to pull it all off (as you would for an appliance, etc.) and I am fairly sure it's there for a reason - to minimize wear on those edges. So I am guessing we live with those minor damaged areas which are only really visible in bright sunlight. Thanks for any insight on that.

I am doing our floor now with laminate in the basement. I am going to be doing the stairs and had a question. The manufacture that I went with makes both the stair tread, bull nose, and rise... Is there a reason why you did not go with a full stair tread? IE: It seems like it would be easier and faster to just put and entire stair tread on, rather than some laminate, then measure/cut... then put a the bull nose piece on the end of step... Just want to make sure I am not over thinking something here...

Hi, good questions! First of all I would recommend installing risers and treads with nothing’s same time, because you can do more precise installation without gaps. Best installation from top to the bottom , because you don’t need to walking up and down over fresh stairs many times. And for second question: I used 23 Ga nails, holes not visible. As a stair builder for over 30 years I would not recommend laminate floor planks for a stair tread application. I can promise you will get squeaks over time. Spend the money and get solid 1" treads. That is unless you want to use your stairway as an alarm system.

Please be safe. I think Vinyl, Laminate, and hardwood are all dangerous on stairs. I know carpets are dirty. I think using a easily replaceable carpet runner may be the best way to go. You only have to fall down from a slippery stairs once to realize carpet is the safest option. Since permanent carpet is too hard to replace therefore I recommend a runner option.

MrYoucandoityourself The reason I ask is because I cannot find the matching bullnoses and this guy told me that commonly they add a darker color to the bullnose to contrast the transitions between steps so no one mis-steps. Have you heard of this technique?
@MrYoucandoityourself
@MrYoucandoityourself 11 жыл бұрын

The bull nose cannot be raised on a stair edge because it is a trip hazard and against the code. Always cut the stair covering short to let the bull nose settle level with the laminate so there is no raised edge.

Why did you shoot nails through a floating floor. You use adhesive on stairs because it allows for a little swelling. Nails can crack the west layer when the boards naturally react to changes in moisture. It’s fine while the house has active climate control. But let the power go out for awhile or the AC die. You will be replacing those treads.

Laminate flooring not affected by the moisture.
@mathewhallstein5934
@mathewhallstein5934 2 жыл бұрын
@@MrYoucandoityourself are you serious? Laminate flooring is mainly pressed together wood held together with glue and a wear layer. When moisture intrudes it begins to swell. Many inproperly installed laminate laminate floors have buckled due to moisture. While you obviously have the skill to do the job, you lack the proper foundation of knowledge to do it correctly. I am a CFI certified flooring installer and I am letting you know that shooting nails through a floating floor is a recipe for disaster, but if your willing to warranty your work.
