It’s a haunted refrain in some way. Like something you heard and you try to find it, but you can never recapture the feeling it gave you then. Like trying to hold onto decaying leaves. The pain, sorrow and beauty in nostalgia. Bon Iver are masters at evoking sentimentality through atmospherics.

It’s the utter simplicity of the lyrics. The imagery and soundscape they imply. “Don’t you lock when you’re fleeing…I’d like lot to hear keys.” Think of all the time he heard those keys in a different context. She was getting home. Entering the apartment. But not the final moment. “I’d like not to hear keys” Too much to bear in that last instance, where he realizes what was taken for granted is now gone.

9 years later, and my heart still gets so heavy when I hear this. Most beautiful song to ever exist. That violin outro is gold.

This is the greatest version of Beach Baby I've ever heard and one of the most beautiful performances of any song I've ever heard. At 3:18 it's like even he can't believe how good it was.

Saw them live, twice, back in 2019. Front row at both shows and all I wanted was him to play beach baby. He didn't play it at either show, he did a few from the old albums but I never got my chance to hear this one in person. It's definitely the best live version I've found on the internet and I'm saving it forever. This is for my daughter, Dylan Iver.

Justin has brought so much to so many people with his music that I think he deserves to be called one of the greatest artists of all time. The simplicity in his music and the instant emotional connection people share with it is genuinely so amazing.

This song makes me cry every time. It makes me happy and also makes me sad. Which is a great feeling. I'm listening to the rain pattering on my roof while watching this. Ugh he's so talented and powerful. Xx
