My daughter is on Lamotrigine for focal seizures. She had her blood drawn at 2 week and 6 week intervals after reaching the desired dose. Her blood level actually decreased between the 2 and 6 week draws. Can you explain why this would happen? Thank you

In psychiatry, we do not use levels of lamotrigine to determine therapeutic levels as we use lower doses than those achieved for seizure control. therefore, I do not have experience with checking the levels or what could affect them. However, there are medications that increase the clearance of lamotrigine such as phenobarbital, carbamazepine, phenytoin, and primidone, there may be others as well. Definitely a good question to ask her neurologist.

Does this drug help improve cognition or does it decrease cognition and does it help with the those real emotionally numb/flat affect symptoms and Anhedonia associated with depression or caused by SSRI? I’ve got a persistent form of depression that sometimes becomes major.

Is muscle loss a side effect? I just got on it and maybe I’m wrong but it feels like my muscles are getting smaller no matter what I do or how much I eat.

Yes, it can be, particularly when the person is having a lot of irritability and mood swings.

Could lamotrogine extended release cause weight gain? My Dr said no however I lost 30 lbs being on just regular lamotrogine but gained it all back after starting the extended release.

That is interesting, I have not seen that with lamotrigine or XR version.

@@LevelheadedMind I'm asking because I'm on a weight loss journey, which is hard already due to my family genetics. However, to possibly be on a medication that may make you gain weight is frustrating and discouraging for me.

​@@raeraeflores8268 I asked the same question when using sodium valproate but in my experience it came down to calories in v calories out. A simple equation of eating more adds weight and eating less loses it. I hope you find a balance I know it's difficult.

It's a horrible drug with terrible side effects and can be very difficult to get off of, as is the case with all psychiatric drugs. It doesn't cause addiction but it does cause dependence.
