First video footage I've seen of the UK TET, and some excellent footage to boot. Some sections I would struggle with as I'm a complete newbie, but I'm determined to get the right skills and eventually do the whole of the UK route at least. Gosh, used to do some of my running training up on Edge Lane when we lived in Long Preston. From LP Church to Settle and back was a good route. I envy you having that one close by. Ride safe! Les

Enjoyable TET video. If You want to upgrade the mirrors, so you can fold them away easily, then look into a pair of Doubletake mirrors or Touratech Adjustable Folding Mirrors or KTM OEM Folding Mirrors. Cheers.

I used the Ordnance Survey OS Maps app. It’s possible to import the GPX file into your account on a computer, edit as you need then when you access it via the app it’s there waiting. I downloaded a 1:25k map to cover the area I needed for when signal dropped out and away I went. I use OS maps almost everyday at work and at play so following the route was no problem.

Ha, yeah they were a bit annoying. This was quite a while ago. If you watch some of my more recent vids you can see I've swapped the Yamaha and also fitted some adjustable mirrors to its replacement.

@@BikeLugger I'm looking at the ones that wrap round the handlebars so I don't have to keep moving them. What was the Yam and what's replaced it? I like a bit of running commentary on the trail rides, on the area, lane, bike and skills needed, but may be in the minority.

I managed to improve its behaviour slightly, but in the end it was fixed by swapping the XT600e for a KTM 690 Enduro...

Great stuff! Let me know how you get on. You'll find the road from Slaidburn to Wray has been resurfaced on the climb where my bike became 'sleepy'. They've been doing lots of work up there recently in prep for some United Utilities Water pipe repair. The road should be open again now, just look out for work vehicles.

mank0110 The main sign is a restriction for motor vehicles with four wheels (bikes and trikes are ok) The one underneath it is just reminding folk that they must stick to the track and they could land in hot water if they get caught riding off the track. It’s a common one now as people often think on a green lane they can go ride or drive on the fun quarry bits just off the side. Lots of these areas are protected so to keep them open to us it’s always best to play by the rules.

Dave Dickson. Cheers, I was using my phone with the OS Maps App installed. I’d marked the TET route onto it and just followed it along. Not perfect, but cheap and I like OS mapping.

@@BikeLugger ive just downloaded osMand navigator and overlayed the UK TET onto it. Still trying to get to grips with it before attempting the Hornby to Settle section. I need a cheaper bike though. My bike is too shiny to learn falling off on.

Dave Dickson If you want a smooth ride with minimal stops it’s best to familiarise yourself with the route as much as you can first. Even look on google street view to check what the entrances to lanes/junctions look like. It’s surprising how much you remember on the day and it prevents spending ages at each junction looking at your phone. Take a paper map with it drawn on as backup. A light bike is best if you’re on your own. Cheap or well protected works. I started on a 20year old Suzuki, then the Yamaha in this vid. Now I’m on a KTM 690 Enduro, it’s a whole other beast. I love it. Don’t be afraid to drop them, that’s why you’ve got it!

Hi, Thanks. Yeah it's an app called OS Maps, free to download, but £20 a year for the whole country at 1:25k OS Mapping. Good price I think for how much I use it for fun and work. It's not ideal when it comes to following a route on a motorbike unless you turn off your screen save function, but the detail is excellent so I'm always confident I'm in the right spot.

I have done the hornby road route and headed up morcombe, What is the route you took? And is that your phone you are using if so what's the software/app you are using I'm have to pull over and read a map the old way and get lost a lot

Hi, I did a circular route from Slaidburn to Wray and then through the Dales into Long Preston. I was using my iPhone and the OS Maps App with the route stored on it. Always tells you where you are in relation to the route, but doesn't always show the actual map so it's not perfect. Best to have a paper map as a back up. Cheers.

Mr BikeLugger, like your video, well done ! I live in Lancashire and would also love to ride this route, but seem to be the only person that is just so confused about GPS and GPX Tracks and so on. I bought a Garmin Zumo 660 thinking it would be a breeze and send me on my way, what a waste of time and dosh! So in your experience what is the best way to get the routes onto a device and get out there, or show me the way and ill buy you your dinner...and a pint!! Regards Andy

Kind words! Thank you! I originally just used paper maps for lots of routes, they can be a bit of a faff at times, but you don’t need to worry about batteries. In this video I’m using my phone and the OS Maps App. I’ve an account with the Ordnance Survey (£20 a year, bargain as you can download maps of the entire country) It’s possible to download a GPX file into your account on a computer and magically it appears on your phone when you open the app. The app does rely on cellular data to show the maps, but if you’ve lots of storage available it is possible to download the map for offline use. It’s not perfect, but it can be useful at times. I’d love to play about with a Garmin Montana, but funds won’t allow that currently! They seem to be one of the devices of choice when it comes to off-road route finding.

BikeLugger do you think it’s a possibility with a Tom Tom 400 sar nav for motorbikes I’m dying to do a bit of TET I live in Yorkshire and fancy a few days with the tent and sleeping bag just need reliable gpx for satnav

I’m not really familiar with that unit. I guess if it will accept GPX files and allow you to follow them then it should work. The only downside of a more road based satnav might be that when you’re on some of the remote tracks you’ll just be following a highlighted route across a flat green screen with no other features like walls, barns, woodland to help with your positioning. On the plus side, that sounds like an adventure, but might annoy land owners should you get things wrong!

Salter fell, where you dropped your bike isnt as smooth as it was when they graded it for prince charles to go grouse shooting around 2005 time, used to be a regular wed night ride for us back then.

It's a great track, not many that length these days. Most of the southern half is now graded gravel and doesn't offer much challenge.

Salter Fell. a good mix of rocky sections mixed with fast flowing sections. Difficult going on big 2 cylinder bikes. Good on single cylinder enduro bikes.

Thats one of two Bantams, that's from the 60's I think, the older one is from the 50's. I've rebuilt the engine from the 60's one and when I have time, funds and motivation to spare I'll hopefully get the 50's frame and rolling stock restored and make something that can be ridden. I'm still thinking about trials for it... Currently, all the bits are tucked away, one day I'll tackle it....

Yeah, providing I didn’t get her too wet the old girl always used to do me proud. I’ve swapped to a KTM 690 now, quite a different beast! Suspension was stock on the old XT, only thing I did to it was swap the rear can for a stainless Quill unit. It certainly let it breath easier and sounded great! Keep on hammering the trails with your XT!

@@BikeLugger Well the 690r is a yearning of myself too. For now though I'm upgrading to hyperpro front/rear and a top end rebuild to go with. Thinking about Caucasus and I believe the xt won't be very hard pressed. Keep up the off road videos and be in good health!

No. I have the 990 set up for road use really, fairly slick tyres, etc. It's a bit big and heavy for the trickier/slipperier stuff. I have taken it on gravel tracks and it manages those fine. Dorman Diaries The Hornby Road / SalterFell track (at 1:00 on the vid) has a TRO in place against four wheel vehicles at all times of year. Three wheels or less is ok meaning that bikes, trikes, and sidecar units are fine. I’ve been up there and seen wardens on the lookout for people breaking the rules so it is actively enforced. I think some of the large gates are locked meaning you can only really fit a bike through the narrow side gates. Hope that helps. It’s a great track and one of the longest stretches without tarmac you’ll find up here.
