@@julianneale6128 Correct, Throughout the war, all sides continuously improved and modified their products. It was a technologicl war too. The Merlin engine was a excellent example, and always being improved, it needed to be. Where that took place , was irrelevant. The basic design was a brilliant one, so much so, that it survived beyond the war , being produced in various forms, from 1933, to 1950. 40 aircraft types were fitted with it. It was a ROLLS ROYCE designed product; and also, made under licence in the US, as much as any US designed products, are made under licence, elsewhere in the world today.

The Mossie was the plane the Germans feared the most. It was a high level recon from 40000 feet and a tactical bomber precisely bombing targets from heights of 100 feet, a night fighter and bomber bombing Berlin with the same load out as a B17.

I remember the arrival of the Lancaster at Mount Hope Airport outside of Hamilton Ontario as a young boy- arrived on a truck in pieces after being removed from a pedestal. It took Canadian Warplane Heritage a number of years to make her flightworthy again and then it became and still is a common sight in the sky over Hamilton. As for Mosquitos, 1032 of them were built in Downsview Ontario (not part of Toronto) during the war years- my father remembers them flying overhead on test flights before being flown overseas. How I wish we had a Mosquito in airworthy condition in Canada.

Wow ! I often wondered what happened to that Lanc on a concrete Pedastal. It was my first visit to Canada, in 1966. I saw, and photographed it. A complete Lancaster in a large grassy area in central Toronto. A few years later , it had gone, and my relations , living there, didn't know what became of it. In 2014, during another visit, I was standing underneath 'VERA' , In Hamilton Airo Museum, talking to the crew, who were to fly VERA to Britain, in 2 months time. ME NOT knowing she was the ''Pedastal Lancaster''.Thanks for clearing that up .

Excellent Video, great weather.The props are recorded at the right speed per second, and there is no roar of the wind across the mikes. AND no stupid music. It has to be remembered, that these shows are visited by families with young children--and not just enthusiasts, so that information is sometimes necessary.

It's okay to for the announcer to ramble on when an aerobatic aircraft is flying or a newer aircraft is flying around, however at the better shows, they quit talking when the vintage aircraft are flying past so you can hear the engines. It's fine to start talking after they fly past and before they get there. This guy never stops, he just talks louder so you can hear him over the aircraft noise.

I couldn't agree more. I LOVE airshows, and go every chance I get, but these damn announcers can't shut up. Constant history lessons, and often I hear them say incorrect info! Let people hear the sound of these wonderful old (and sometimes, not so old) flying machines. Maybe just say the name of the plane, maybe the pilot's name, and then shut the hell up.

KA114 Mosquito was built in New Zealand not Canada. I also believe that the fuselage for the Canadian build was also built in NZ from moulds built in New Zealand using the original drawings from De Havilland. KA114 first flew in approx June 2012 from Ardmore Airfield just south of Auckland. I saw the same plane in Tauranga 19 and 20 December 2012 - photos and movies to prove it.

@@wilburfinnigan2142 Yes the wingtips would rise by about 12" when carrying the grandslam, the plane would also sharply rise by 500 ft when it was dropped but the point is it still worked. If the B17 or B24 had been used it would never have got off the ground. It would have carried on taxing ending in a crash, a very large explosion and a big crater in some field in East Anglia

Almost everyone will say that the Lancaster was the best, but there's a great argument in saying the Mosquito. 2 engines not 4. 2 crew not 7. Faster and safer. More efficient. I agree the Mosquito was remarkable, even the Spitfire carried bombs and was used for low level attacks on small difficult targets where pin point bombing reduced the chances of civilian casualties.

Curious what that Spit's story is - looks like a IX or XVI in silhouette, but with four cannon, a modified oil cooler scoop (like nothing I've ever seen before), and ID lights moved to the wingtip - to say nothing of the obviously RAF-inspired, but inaccurate, paintjob. Anyone know what's going on there?

I noticed too. I'm pretty sure that it's a full sized replica built from a (I believe French) plan and made of wood. The builder/pilot if I remember correctly is a retired airline pilot from the USA. He couldn't afford a R-R engine but could afford to fit an Allison V-1710 with a DC3 prop! It apparently has a great performance all things considering but there's only a couple flying...

Intersting machines, yes. Unfortunately you've got a better chance free diving with a snorkel for Titanic... Still, these sorts of treasures still turn up on occasion. For instance when that team went to Russia to pull that Hurricane out of a lake and a local told them that there was also another in the same well preserved state. It ended up being a P39, but I don't think anyone complained. Haha

soaringtractor nothing wrong at all with the supercharged Allison. It was only the turbosupercharged Allison that was a real pig with it's huge reliability issues in cold weather. All those P38s coming home on 1 engine, providing the other engine held on...

soaringtractor Allison engine were a piece of shit. When the Brits specified the design of the P51 and the yanks put the Allison in it, it was a complete failure. Only when a decent British engine (Merlin) was put in did it become useful.

When I was a small boy they held the Harmsworth boat races on the Bay of Quinte in front of my families farm and to my ears the Rolls Royce Griffins used in the Canadian boat made a sound that in my memories sounded so close. The announcer said that they were Rolls engines if you were listening.

soaringtractor no, it's referring to where the particular R-R engine was built. The Merlins built in the US had slightly different tool kits so it was call by Rolls-Royce the 'Packard built' R-R Merlin to differentiate, as the engines were slightly different in ways. The R-R Merlin 266 when not in a P51 and in a MkXVI Spit was larger than the engines then built in England. The intercooler on the 266 was of the earlier type. You'll notice the MkXVI has a slightly bulged upper engine cowling (power bulge), to accommodate the taller 266, which actually had a slight detrimental effect in yaw.

The twin-engined fast light bomber/fighter concept was brilliantly executed in the Mosquito, and it is possible that had the UK concentrated on it rather than on the Lancaster for strategic bombing, the air war could have been won more quickly, with fewer crew and aircraft losses, and fewer collateral civilian deaths. Britain repeated it with the Canberra, and would have with the TSR-2, but fortunately these never had to be put to the test in the way the Mosquito was. The US first adopted the Canberra, later built the F-111, perhaps best appreciated by the Royal Australian Air Force. PS: The Lancaster has been a frequent sight over the Toronto lakeshore for many years. Its sound is indeed unmistakable! Sometimes accompanied by a Spitfire.

They won't have been at the maximum power. I'm not sure but it's likely they could have been at around 2850-3000rpm (3000 being maximum), but a low boost pressure, perhaps +6lb to +8lb or so. They don't want to stress the aircraft or engines, even though I'm sure they could if they wished. Their all up weight will also be very low, with no bomb load and little fuel... They don't need anything like full power to get off, especially with a massive runway.

Julian I recently read an account of a pilot taking off and flying in a Spitfire Mk XIV, he used just 7 lbs boost for take off then 14 lbs for climb which was normal during the war but then at 10,000 feet he dropped to about 1700 RPM and 3 lbs boost for cruising, the Griffon engine in WW II was cleared for up to 25 lbs boost.

Dale Burrell well yes but not quite in this particular case. The Avro Lancaster and DH Mosquito used almost exactly the same Rolls-Royce Merlin. The Spitfire used at first the Rolls-Royce Merlin and the later models used the Rolls-Royce Griffon. In the case of this particular Spitfire it's a little different, as in it's actually a full scale wooden replica (not a real Spitfire). The man that built it from plans he bought found that to by an airworthy R-R Merlin was extremely expensive and that it was very much cheeper and easier to get an airworthy Allison V1710. The type of Allison engine used in this Spitfire was used in many US built aircraft such as the P39, P40 and early P51.

@@julianneale6128 The Lancaster got Griffon engines and a wider wingspan after WW2 and it was renamed The Lincoln. It was nigh on obsolete when it entered service, but was a stop gap until the Canberra and V Bombers came on line. The UK also bought some B29s and renamed them The Washington, but they were not very popular with crew. My father in law rebuilt radio and radar sets out of Lancasters and Lincolns during his National Service.

I've actually seen a Lincoln as they have one at RAF Cosford museum...but it was in 1990, so a long time ago. Of course it was the Shackleton with Griffon engines. That's the only reason we have spare engines for the Griffon engined Spitfires as lots became available when they scrapped the " Shack ".
