If I'm honest the only way to approach this conversation is from a humorous perspective (e.g. Rocket Powered Mohawk) because to have an earnest, serious discussion on why Lance needs to go will only end in heartbreak and frustration when Daddy Stroll doubles down. Let's be frank: the hiring of Adrian Newey and Dan Fallows before him were all aimed at giving Lance the best possible machinery in the same way that Lance was (allegedly) given a bespoke car in a spec series to give him a leg up on everyone else. Well, thanks to Checo, who beat Lance in their time together, we're getting a sneak preview of how Stroll will perform in a car designed by Adrian Newey. The only thing worth looking forward to is the possibility of seeing Fernando Alonso finally get to weave magic with a Newey-designed machine.
@dominicbarden44362 ай бұрын
On the spec series front, I think the 'all cars are equal' idea is just an illusion. Even in a spec series there are teams with better infrastructure and a better ability to attract top talent from both a driver and team personnel perspective, never mind other things like the alleged Mecachrome engine lottery in F2 that has been doing the rounds in rumour mills this season. Prema had long been a really good team to drive for before Stroll came along, and were the team to beat in European F3 in the years immediately before he raced for them as well. I think it's also worth remembering that while we pile criticism on drivers like Stroll or Zhou for being rubbish, fundamentally they (mostly) aren't bad racing drivers; if some of us fans went up against them in a race we would likely get roundly thrashed. Having said that, while I think that Stroll has on the whole proven to be a genuinely solid racer at times, most notably in 2020, he doesn't seem to be at the level expected for a driver in a top team, and Aston Martin have ambitions of becoming such a team. Unfortunately, he seems to be the weak link. He does have talent. He has a pole, a couple of podiums, he's been generally decent in the wet and at times was a really good starter. On the face of it he's had a pretty solid F1 career, it's certainly nothing to be ashamed of. But at the same time he has also put in some shoddy performances, and I think there have been more of those in recent years. It says something that 2023 yielded his best championship finish (10th) and his second-best points total (74), yet he was roundly derided as one of the worst-performing drivers of the season, at least in part because in the other car Alonso had his best season in a long time.
@jimsmagnificentminiaturemo32352 ай бұрын
@@dominicbarden4436 I admit I don't quite get what you're trying to say, but if you're somehow implying that Stroll is still on the grid purely on merit I'm going to have to respectfully disagree, as drivers who have achieved so much more are now gone (e.g. Daniel Ricciardo). Incidentally, since you mentioned him, we now know that Zhou will be gone next year, too. Yes, these drivers would easily thrash most of us mere mortals around a racetrack, real or even virtual, but this is F1, and as the attrition rate of most drivers not named Lance Stroll has shown, one's ability to hang onto one's race seat is down to what he delivers on the track. Compared to other drivers who have come and gone, that's simply not the case with Lance Stroll, who's been in F1 for seven years now but still beaches his car in the gravel. I was just saying I've accepted that Stroll's not going anywhere, so if we're going to talk about that we might as well just have a laugh about it.
@dominicbarden44362 ай бұрын
@@jimsmagnificentminiaturemo3235 I'm not saying that Stroll is on the grid purely on merit; that was obvious when he made his F1 debut. But I think over time he had somewhat justified having a place on the grid, however over the last couple of years he's been starting to go the other way.

I think it's seriously possible that Lance would rather play tennis or do something that he wants to do himself. People saying that he has an easy way out into the Valkyrie project, I don't think he will. I don't think he enjoys racing and stuff enough for him to continue doing stuff with it, the guy very obviously needs to do something else. Would love to see any driver in Lances place but I personally feel bad just hating on the guy without thinking of any reason why he'd be doing this. Lance’s kind of nepotism is lethal to high performing teams. It creates hostile division, dispels the idea that everyone has skin in the game and is giving their all, weakens important interpersonal relationships, and hurts the pride that individuals take in their work to achieve success. It’s definitely now permanently damaged the credibility of Aston Martin, and casts doubt on their ability to make the right decisions for the team. Just an embarrassment. I genuinely think that Aston is being held back from making a truly fast car because the faster the car gets, the worse stroll gets. If he's doing tons of sim time like they claim, he's developing the car to be slower but more manageable for himself. Look at 2023 when the upgrades seemed to slow them down, but stroll was catching Alonso in qualifying and such. The strategy to keep stroll around seems to be "drag them down to his level and beat them with experience" - in terms of his teammates.

Not only is he an embarrassment for Aston, he’s an embarrassment to F1. Those 20 drivers are supposed to be the best in the world and he just makes a mockery of things.

Lance should never be in FI a terrible driver he only got a seat because his father owes company but what about the shareholders think Aston Martin only have one decent driver

Doesn't Stroll own JCB as well? Correct me if I am wrong, but if that is the case, JCB won't be dropping their sponsorship.

No! Isn’t it the other way round? JCB are part of a consortium that invested in Aston.

I have been a low key fan of Aston, and force India before Aston, but it really is a shame that it feels like I need to keep quiet about that. I usually keep my enjoyment about Aston on the down low. If Aston were to get rid of Lance they might become my favorite team, but right now it’s really hard to support them.

I support them because I'm an Alonso fan and honestly... I just say Alonso and not Aston.

I’m with you on the Stroll point in that it’s obvious that he’s there for his parentage, and some results or more accurately errors are a bit Logan Sargeant-esque and risk damaging the brand, but isn’t the broader and more important issue that the Aston just isn’t good enough. In terms of actual driving, his qualifying has sometimes been solid and being three places behind your 2x WDC team mate in the race isn’t horrific. Aston have just lost their way with the car, haven’t they? For me the more interesting question is whether Alonso still have enough speed by the time a full Newey car is ready. That looks like first year of the new regs in 26, which will make Fernando 45 years old at the start of the season. We may just get a glimpse of the car’s direction miraculously in 25 despite Newey not having official started till then, but for me the issue is has time for a third crown finally run out for Alonso, once again in the right team at the wrong time.

Something about that clip of Lance being all sulky and alone on the sofa while Hamilton glances over at him and just smirks... pure gold. If Lawrence is so for Lance being the head driver, have him head the Valkyrie in WEC, even if it's the development of it. It makes perfect sense and Lance still gets to drive a factory car. I feel for his side of the garage and those at the factory who can't focus of making upgrades that actually work for the car because they're having to make replacement parts every 5 minutes.

One thing I will say in his defence is that he's actually probably one of the better drivers on the grid in very wet conditions. So if a majority of F1s races each year happened during a torrential downpour, I think he'd actually do alright. 😅

I just want to see one season with Stroll and Alonso in a Newey built car with a Honda powerplant just to see the sheer difference in skill level operating a championship winning car.

I like the team that was once Force India. I even like the brand Aston Martin. When Newey is onboard, I don't think neither Lance or Yuki will be driving in AM car. Neither driver has spare capacity left when driving fast. In the case of Lance, he is even short on capacity to drive the car currently.

I'm someone who has become a huge fan of alonso over the last decade (among others) but I can't feel like truly backing for the TEAM. It genuinely feels like the team is holding Alonso back, the car back, etc. Look at 2023. Amazing car. Every upgrade seemed to make it slower. But every time the car gets slower, lance gets closer to Alonso. At the start of this season they were near even. I genuinely think they may be upgrading the car to be EASIER to drive, but not FASTER. Lowering the skill ceiling and raising the floor. That's a conspiracy for sure but it's absurd that they are now potentially going to be falling down to where they were in 2022 again... And it's sad to me that Alonso will almost certainly end his career there. I highly doubt that they will keep him after 2026 - since other drivers like George, Lando, Leclerc, potentially even Max or Lewis, Piastri, ETC. will be available. It feels like a career graveyard where you're paid loads of cash to try to keep the team relevant while it perpetually treads water near Lance's comfort zone. Alonso deserves better - a car that can win (and not have a strategy call completely screw that... Cough, monaco...) if he doesn't score a single win, much less consistent podiums or championships, by the time he retires? That would just be sad.

I think Lawrence is the one that’s been pushing Lance the whole time. And Lance isn’t going anywhere until he tells Lawrence he doesn’t wanna do this anymore. I don’t think the other shareholders will say anything. I bet Lawrence made it very clear from the beginning to the other shareholders signing onto his team that Lance was gonna be a driver
