I've seen Alot of discos and defenders going through to 10, 20,30 years still going strong I also don't see you buying an 80k+ car and keeping it the Toyota is something that should be cheap and innovated but they're expensive and with tech from the 90s they are only reliable that's it it's seems Toyota is losing its lead in sales and won't be here for long especially with these 80k cars land rover Mercedes bmw audi porsche jaguar are all destroying the land criuser sale numbers

I live in the UK but have spent a lot of time in Southern Africa where most people I know who go seriously off road choose a Toyota on the basis of reliability rather than absolute off-road performance. I have owned three Land Rover Discoveries from new over the last thirty years. The first had a major engine problem after three years. The second ran virtually trouble free for almost twenty years and 200,000 miles, but had terrible paint quality/galvanic corrosion that Land Rover would not address under warranty. My current Discovery 4 has only done 16000 miles, but recently had a complete electronic black out. You would not want that to happen in the middle of the Kalahari. My son's 2018 Discovery Sport had a similar "control system fault" at the same time. Despite these issues, the Discovery is great to drive on and off road in the UK and meets my needs for seating capacity, load carrying, towing and comfort better than the Toyota. It will never be too far from support if/when it breaks down. If I was in Southern Africa or other remote areas I would choose a Toyota every time.

You mentioned reliability that that is where the Toyota rules. They just keep going and going and going. In Australia LR are seen as the city vehicle(school run etc.). Great looking vehicle and loads of tech. Very refined. But my cruiser just keeps getting things done. and will still be getting it done in 20, 30 years or more. And the after market is HUGE. You should see the Carfax on my former 2015 LR4 ....about an inch thick. Spent a total of 3.5 months in total at the dealer in the 3 and a half years I had it. No feeling like doing 75 on the highway and having the suspension go out. Or hitting the gas and it lurching backwards. My 2007 LR3. Year 5 and 6 put about 4500 into it to keep it running post warranty. 2007 RR Sport. Took about 25K miles in constant visits to fix everything. Then it was pretty good to 140K. All bought new to take advantage of Section 179. My 2012 Range Rover was actually perfect. No issues. Now for my Toyotas. 2000 4Runner Limited bought new. Bought an extended warranty. Worst waste of money cause I never used it. 75K miles and only warranty repair was a broken arm rest. Traded in with original brakes. Bought a used 2000 Land Cruiser in 2004 with 67K. Came with new tires and brakes. Traded in at 150K on same tires and brakes. Nothing broke but the tape deck (which I don't own any tapes). Worst decision to get rid of that car. Someone is probably still driving that car..... Oh yeah. The big Rovers love new brakes and tires every 25K miles. I could write a whole post on all the loaners that would break.Them Rovers sure are pretty though :) while I do see some high mileage ones they seem to require a lot of work, Toyotas do that with little more than fluid changes and normal wear items. Actually great friends with my Land Rover mechanic now. He tells me all mechanics at his dealership drive Toyotas, Subarus, and Jeeps.

The LR4 was pretty robust towards the end of its life here in the US. They worked out most of the kinks by then. You missed a trick! At 13:40, if you lower, yes, LOWER the suspension, it will touch the rock and pop it into “extended” mode. This is more than an inch higher than “offroad” height that you were in. Would have then been able to clear that obstacle. Oh, and while it’s in extended mode you can press the raise suspension button with a foot on the brake and it goes into “hyper extension” mode which adds a ton more clearance. But im not a fan of that setting as there is no longer any give for ride comfort. But it’s cool to see it standing on stilts!

Until you mentioned it I hadn’t thought about the value difference between these two vehicles, The 200 series land cruiser is 14 years old now, with that engine dating back to 1999. It’s kind of amazing they sell for the price they do considering the technology is well known. It’s nice to see the comparison between these but I don’t think the demographics of the two owners overlap anymore, the defender is more aspirational and will sell well in cities.
