What happens when your boat is broken and in the boatyard, and two sailors become land-bound? Land cruising of course!
As Varuna gets worked on by the boatyard, replacing her bowsprit, we hit the road driving back and forth across California and Nevada for Ty to do some work and make some money to help pay for the repairs. Along the way, we stop and check out quite a few cool sites! We see tons of old aircraft at the Mojave Air and Space Port and pass through Manzanar Japanese Internment Camp. It also happens to be Labor Day weekend, so we do some camping in the Sierra Nevadas near Mammoth Lakes. There, we get back to nature and explore Devil’s Postpile and Rainbow fall, amongst the beautiful landscape of the mountains. After that, it’s time to hit the road again and we head to Reno, where we are lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the Great Reno Hot Air Balloon Race! Check it out!

Thanks, guys, interesting video to illustrate how you filled the bowsprit gap! My parents and older brother (British) were interned by the Japanese in Shanghai. They spent 2 years and 4 months locked behind wire. There was no compensation for them and my parents were never really quite the same again - the recollections of oppression and restriction lived with them to their end many decades later. As with those in the camp you saw, they were innocents caught up in the stupidity of war. And human-kind hasn't learned much since then - ask our fellow human beings in Syria. JG Ballard's "Empire of the Sun" captured the times my parents lived through - Ballard was there too.

Wow Roy, so terrible to hear about your parents experience and how it changed them. Syria is a very sad example, of what humanity is capable of. I remember the movie of Empire of the Sun, it was incredibly moving. The interaction between the two boys in the camp on opposing sides of the wire playing "their" roles was a shame.

I have spent a lot of time skiing Mammoth Mountain. You picked a great place to hang out in. I haven't been to Devils Postpile in many years and you reminded me I need to visit again. You'll be on the water soon. Have fun.

Another great video! Growing up in SoCal my family spent many summers backpacking and camping up in the Mammoth area and visited many places like Manzanar and Devil's Postpile. It is such a wonderful area. My mom and her husband were on a week long back packing trip at Gladys Lake (out of Devil's Postpile along the John Muir Trail) when that fire in '92 came down the canyon. They had to hike out through the forest fire. Somehow the people tasked with making sure everyone was out missed them.

I would say that the Government did what it had to do to protect the people of this country.. Back then many Japanese were also loyal to their homeland and we couldn't take a chance of those who were disloyal working against us from within.. Times were different back then Maybe if our Government still had that protect Americans first attitude 911 wouldn't have happened, or San Bernardino, or The Boston bombings, or the Pulse nightclub massacre. Now we allow anyone in regardless of if they hate us or not.. The loyal Japanese did have to suffer through the war but it had to be done to protect the war effort...

The 442ND division of soldiers made up of Japanese Americans from the internment camps were the most decorated during WWII. Only the uninformed would want to repeat what we have done in the past. If we did that all Christians would be locked up for the bombings of Eric Rudolph and others that have terrorized Planned Parenthood and other women's clinics. They seem to forget that we have been under siege from these groups for a very long time.

Looks like we started a discussion here, strong views either way. That is great, the important part is that we can continue to talk and have different opinions, not forgetting history is the important take away. America and the freedom's they have because of sacrifices through history are why we can all have our own strong opinions, we should all listen and work together to improve on our mistakes of the past.
@TheSkydiverphoenix
@TheSkydiverphoenix 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are correct! Many Japanese served honorably in the war.. It is also true that many Japanese Americans were ashamed of what Japan did at Pearl Harbor. I do not fully agree with what happened to them during WWII. I just understand that it was a different time back then with different world views..

This was my favorite of your VLOG's so far which is really saying something because normally I hate it when I go to a sailing VLOG and there's no sailing. Of course it has a lot to do with a recent argument I got into with a young lady from the "America is the worst nation in history" crowd. I think they're called AITWNIH. Coincidently, one of the things she cited was the interment camps for the Japanese in America. I'll be polite and say she was animated. instead of saying she was frothing at the mouth stone cold nuts. I'm not going to say that. My response was that no one, no nation avoids mistakes and bad policies now and again. Then I suggested that we discuss the interment camps the Japanese had for the Chinese or the interment camps in Germany. Not too many folks got out of those extremely brutal dungeons alive. "Everyone" came out of America's camps alive. She said I was just stupid. So she won. Anyway, GREAT VLOG! By the way, my name is Stuart, not X-it Blasting. I'm gonna fix that one day.

Thankfully, Manzanar is still here...we should study, and teach history warts and all. That being said, enemy alien acts were typical for almost all nations in every war. in the U.S. the Germans and Japanese were interned during WW II. In Australia...here too, were encampment. Here is a link - www.naa.gov.au/collection/snapshots/internment-camps/introduction.aspx. Happened in WW I also. It was common for all countries at war to do this. We need to be ready for the next war...and that we don't let it happen again. (which NO ONE has even hinted at)

@parvels9573

Hi Todd, as i am Australian , not sure what you mean by "special" or where you are from , however we did have POW camps here and there is a well documented escape from a camp at Cowra which ended in tragedy, you can goggle it , we are not proud of what happend then as im sure the British the Germans the US or anyone else are for how they treated POW or interns ,, but i think we have learn,t and moved forward

I am not sure, wouldn't be surprised though. I can't remember ever learning of the local Japanese being locked up and their possessions taken. Would be curious to know, usually the innocent are persecuted in any world event where we categorize "their kind" as all bad.
