I grew on very close to the Dutch coast with the North Sea. After the war, the Germans were made to clear all the landmines from the beach. When they were done, they were forced to march up and down the beach abreast and stomp their feet.

I for instance had german from 7th grade to 10th grade and all 3 years of high school and a lot do the same. Plus with the close boarders to german, serval danes, especially the ones in Sønderjylland, are pretty good at german.

@@TheMoose126 It's not about excusing anything. That's not what should be done and there is no excuse for such crimes. What is dangerous however is to make them out as a unique evil, as if most were not able to commit the same horrible crimes today. The question of just following orders is also an interesting one as it shows how normal people can be transformed into monsters despite them having empathy. If you want to make a group of people do something horrible, the lesson would be that accepting what they'd do as a necessary evil and as them being heros for commiting these crimes. It shows how deceptable we are and what rethoric we must watch out for and call out.

@@rileydavidson207 The part of the Geneva convention that dealt with POWs was signed in 1929, it was called "the Convention relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War", the final version of the treaty dealing with other issues was finalised in 1949. The reason the Danes were able to do this was because the British re-designated German POWs as "soldiers of a nation that has unconditionally surrendered" bypassing the convention all together, pretty sure that loop hole was fixed in the 1949 version though.

This is a great movie. It was always made me think - do kids really have to pay out for the sins of their fathers? In fact, this applies not only to those German boys. And not only to fathers-sons kind of relationship. Do really modern Jews have to be blamed for the Christ's crucifixion? Or even do all the so called "white people" have to be responsible for slavery and all the stuff in the past?
@jeanvonestling7408

Those boys were soldiers of an occupying force. Considering they were stationed in Denmark they had it pretty easy during the war. So they paid as much as those shot on the frontline paid. And as much as those on the frontline it was either them paying or somebody else (allied soldiers or civilians that would die from the mines).

@@SantoshVerma-wk5nz Remember, the Russians would've lost more than what they would have lost if the allies didnt open 2 other fronts. Due to the Allied invasion of Italy, troops from the east were transferred to the west to fight the landings, and when Normandy was invaded even more of those troops were transported. Besides, the Allied bombing over Germany officially rendered the Germans choking for supply since their precious factories powering their military might were being destroyed or rendered useless/ damaged.

Would have been more lucky to be captured by the Americans. Or the Brits earlier in the war...they would have shipped ya to America. I was surprised how well german POWs were treated in the USA. Guess it was because of less personal vendetta and no food shortage in usa? Idk. It is a shame USA prisoners of war were treated so horribly by japan and to a less extent germany...but germany just did not have the resources for a drawn out war... =/. Once the USSR was able to ship everything to the east...and the battle of Britain was lost. War was over...Germany didnt even get the balkins oil =/ God war is horrible

In the words of Christ "When struck, turn the other cheek." Shame on Holland and any allied country that showed this behavior after the war. If not for the spoiled attitude of the entente at the end of WW1, WW2 never would've happened to begin with. Here in the States near my home town we had a German POW camp in ww2. We treated the Germans very fairly, and many even chose to become U.S. citizens after the war around here.

the Germans could have been shipped off to the USSR.... most of the German forces faced the soviets in ww2 but in 1945 about 70% managed to surrender to the Western powers... usually only troops like the turncoat Russians etc who served in the Waffen-SS were sent back to the Russians. the Germans got off pretty lightly all things considered when you think what THEY did when victorious and what a nightmare world they have envisaged if they'd won the war. Wasn't there a German unit managed by the British and equipped with armoured vehicles who did mine clearance work in 1945-46..?
