got a td5 pushing 330.000km with a stage 2 tune have done the head at 270.000km have also rebuilt the gear box and thrown in an lof hd clutch think it's on the original turbo any thoughts on preventative maintenance or should i run it until it goes bang and put an m57 in it am in nz so not many people doing this m57 swap that are local

I am a disabled veteran and have limited use of some limbs. With that said, I want to explore but i am worried about being able to do a trail repair if something pops up. I do proper 3000-4000 mile trips and am always careful to not push my vehicles too hard. I have considered a cummins 2.8 crate engine, rebuilt 200tdi, and many many other options. My question is: what engine would be the most likely to get me home from the wilderness? I am also concerned about fuel range as I don't want to run out of fuel in the cold Canadian mountains or southern deserts. Can't wait for the paid subscription option for questions.

Hello fellow Vet Sorry to hear about your problems. When it comes to reliability I’d say the bmw m57 coupled to the 8hp70 as all electronic shift can be hand held. And great for maximum eco runs with vast gear ratios available.

I think your idea of “What can you do for £1000.00, 2000.00, etc”, is a great idea. I’m sure if you included the same on your website, you could reduce the amount of your enquiries massively, whilst allowing the average Defender driver something they could aspire to. Not too many customers ready to dump so much cash into a conversation but quite willing to drip feed cash in smaller chunks.

Question for ya. I’m pondering buying a 110 and unsure if I should go TD5 or TDCI. I know the TD5 is the better engine by most accounts. But I’m mostly concerned about the longevity of the chassis, primarily the bulkhead. So to that end I’m leaning toward a TDCI only because it’s air vents are sealed shut, so no water ingress through there. Thoughts on this approach?

Hi, I follow you from Pakistan. Could you explain what is required other than the M57 BMW engine to make this conversion. Is the wiring and ECM of the BMW also required, and what transmission is used? What is required to connect the Engine and Transmission to 4x4 system in the defender?

The 200tdi is the superior of the 2 engines hands down. As a zombie apocalypse engined vehicle, or 3rd world reliable long term vehicle

@@tillyfoxtrotter true but if built properly then you shouldn't really need to go in for 100,000 at least, that's unless you are running 2 bar, which is in my opinion excessive, considering the 200 breathes like a sieve in the first place. No more than 20psi and even then the unit should be in tip top shape

@@Metal05 yes you’re correct that’s for a bare motor and coil packs now add the rest inc stage 2 transmission & transfer case inc adapters and propshafts worthy of the power.
