Hello Christian & Vera, This comment is for both yourselves and your watchers. Before buying my Discovery 4 HSE 3.0V6 diesel, as much as I wanted one I thought/knew it was a bad idea, but life is too short to avoid head aches you lust after. It was in researching the vehicle I came across your channel and was immediately smitten with your channel due to two things: a) Christians high level of engineering competency. b) The chemistry between the two of you made the videos funny and light hearted. I’m an HVAC engineer by trade and I’ll have a go at most anything....line boring excepted, in fact there’s more than that I’d probably hand over to a Land Rover specialist, but your videos gave me the confidence to go ahead and buy my Discovery 4 and dive into my own diagnostics and repairs knowing I had a bunch of videos to help me out. I’m not much good, or interested in social media, but having watched this video (oil gauge) and your insight on funding the channel I thought I’d first find out how to comment on a video and secondly to congratulate you both on a professional and funny channel. I wait every week to see your next video so I dearly hope you get the subscriptions you need. I’m confident it’s not just me that will feel this way. Keep up the fantastic work.

Perfect timing. I installed a 3 gauge pod on my D3 dash, central, between and just above the vents. It's from MUD UK and its for the Puma but I had to angle the base to suit the D3 dash angle. I hadn't yet worked out how to add an oil pressure transmitter to the oil pressure switch location, but here you are with all the details and a UK supplier. Only today my Wife was saying how good the VDO gauges and clock looked.... but what a pity that they didn't work ! :)

Hi Vera and Christian, again a very interesting Video. Many thanks. One suggestion regarding additional instrumentation. I am used to instrument my cars with SPA double gauges, digital ones. They are sometimes better than analoges because you can see the direction where the measurement is moving to. An analog one doesnt show this. Very important if you want to see Exhaust gas temperature as a reaction of your engine torque request. In the case of the discovery there is already a lot of measured values available via the GAP IID Tool. But one instrument I would add anyway. The oil pressure as you did and the water pressure. Both integrated in one double digital instrument of SPA. It is programmable for lower and upper limits and indicating via a warning light when limits are over or underrided. With a digital indication of the cooling water circuit pressure you can see very well if your system is leaking, even if it is very few. And it warns you before the engine is getting overheated. I take for this the SPA instrument for oil and boost pressure. Its because the boost pressure offers a lower pressure range which fits very well with the water circuit. By the time you learn very well how the circuit reacts during heating up and cooling down phase and any deviation of this, even very small, is causing immediately your attention. During cooling down you can see very well if the tightness of the system is perfect or not. So its not all about leackages, you see also if the pressure valve of the reservoir is working correctly which is important for avoiding boiling coolant above 100 Degree.

First of your videos that I've watched. Echoing other folks comments, excellent & informative. Love the banter & what a workshop! Given this engines issues with oil pressure, spun bearings & crank failures, not having a pressure transducer, fitting an oil pressure gauge is a no brainer. Wish my XJ had one, looking at doing similar but don't want to cut holes in the internal trim. Suggestions appreciated.
@brianhoskins1979 Жыл бұрын
On my Defender one good thing is there are no air bags to get in the way of these kinds of installations. So in a crash I will die but at least my oil gauge can go where ever I want. You mentioned adding a resistor for the gauge brightness. I assume, then, that there is a separate wire for the gauge LEDs and you are going to put a resistor inline with this to limit the current to the gauge LEDs. In this case you could consider switching this in with the headlights so that in day time you get a nice brightness and when you put the headlights on it dips down to something more sensible for night time. If you still need a resistor even to dim it down even for the day time, then you could have a permanent inline resistor for the night time brightness, and then switch another resistor in parallel with it to allow for the day time brightness. But at this point I would probably prefer to PWM the gauge LEDs and have two different duty-cycles for the day time and night time. If you want advice about that I could easily make up a circuit that will do it and share it with you.
@Vera_and_Christian Жыл бұрын
The gauge has separate wires. I’ll have to change it to a digital one because it quits when it is below freezing 😂. Christian

I bought my Defender with a device called a "little black box" which has its own multiple sensors for oil, water, voltage etc. It only gives warnings not any readings. Enjoyed the oil pressure video, and although I am saddened to hear of the breakdown, I am interested in seeing the repair and learning about the breakdown. I struggle with adding things to my car - and wonder if I can get replacements for the added parts. I once bought programmable digital panel gauges, but found they were difficult to program. Eventually, I spent weeks designing an Excel spreadsheet to calculate the numbers required for the gauge range and offset needed to match the sensors. After that, I was unable to buy more gauges. The supplier discontinued them because they were too hard to program!

I see the Americans have S pod and Voswitch and we only seam to have ARB linx as far as I can see in the UK so a diy version is on the cards. Perhaps this is something you could look into in an upcoming video as looks like a good inside job for winter project.
