Funny, as of last week my discovery 3 is sitting in lowest position. Panicking that it is going to cost me a fortune considered coil springs but watching this has changed my mind and given me hope. putting it in to garage this week to diagnose the problem (local independent specialist with great reputation not a lr dealer) I would love to fix myself but lack of tools and equipment I think this is one for the garage.

As an engineer myself, I love it when Christian starts explaining how everything works down to the smallest details! Hi Guys, I write this at 8:42 in the video because I didn't want to forget - re the air suspension there are pro-active maintenance areas to help avoiding trouble: 1. Replace the nylon piston ring in the compressor every 2 years to ensure that pumping is in tiptop order. Cost £ 15 and easy to do; 2. Clean and lubricate the ride height sensors every year - cost 30 mins and some spray cleaner/lube; 3. Re air springs, every year put vehicle in full height and using a spray bottle full of soapy water, spray all round each air spring to check for leaks and rubber perishing. DO THIS BEFORE you have a problem to avoid time off the road.
@georgidaskalov83892 жыл бұрын
Hey David, do you have a DIY how this can be done ? I recently became an owner of a LR3, when started the air compressor works for some time even though the car does not seem to have changed how it stands, after running, a loud PSHH is being fired up as if it is a real truck, respectively shortly after I park, car seems to lower different wheels trying to maintain equal level I suppose (I park it on a 2% steep ramp), so with the above info I'd rather check these before running into air compressor problems :)

Hi Christian and vera, myself and my wife really enjoy your videos every time. They are absolutely brilliant.. If an everyday family that generally isn't very car knowledgeable buys a discovery 3 because it has 7 seats and has good boot space for shopping etc and takes it to a garage for everything that happens to there discovery and lets say its a year 2006 model and it cost this family £4000 and because of the age alot of things on the car is old and starting to fail or break in time its what happens and lets say 4 air bags/shocks need replacing as you do in pairs and say 2 height sensors need replacing and because of the leaking air bags the compressor has died because the new owners just drive the vehicle and finally take it to the garage and they say yep. You'll need 4 new bags, a compressor, and height sensors plus the time with a diagnostic tool to recalibrate everything after and plus vat and plus the cost to you as the customer for the parts. I will absolutely guarantee it will cost thousands of pounds. And yeap I've known people just to scrap the car because the repair bill is just too much, unfortunately.. I have actually swapped out our air suspension for coils and, for a few reasons, 1. Cost, so for our coils they were £1000 yes at a one time buy its a lot of money but if you add up the cost of new parts and time at a garage for using a scan tool etc a £1000 doesn't seem that bad, i actually fitted my coils plus other front suspension components over 4 days in the summer on my driveway saving us about £700 only just fitting the coils.. 2. Problems/issues so personally, I've had 2 Hitachi air compressors fitted at about £650 each, and both died over 2 years had everything checked out, air leaks etc from the garage it's always been a mystery and then decided to change to coils, 3. 2nd guessing/Worry, that beautiful ping noise from a landrover is enough to make anyone cry. But when you're on holiday and your 4 hours from home and PING! The air pump has died, and the holiday over. It makes you wonder if it's going to fail at any second. 4th and final. Reliability, air suspension, I've always been told if it works, it's amazing, but it's when it goes bad it gets costly and difficult. Coils, it is what it is; they are more firm, more bumpy, and less of a headache and personally absolutely less on your bank account, no leaks, no dieing air pumps, no sagging air bags, no more dropped air suspension onto bump stops, no more calibration after having height sensors changed, less parts to worry about, and for what i use my discovery 3 for its brilliant.. i just wanted to sorry for the long comment. I absolutely love your videos. I hope you don't stop making them, and i hope your channel keeps growing and growing . My wife and i will definitely support and share your channel the most we can for the love of what we both enjoy so much.. ❤🇬🇧
@Vera_and_Christian2 жыл бұрын
In some cases it is of course logical to convert to coils. It all depends on the use case (modern word which Jung programmers use a lot at my work place). Cost is a big factor too. In your case, with multiple compressor failures, I get your point and I agree with you. Agree about the Bing too. I don’t think there is an other car on the planet which can let your heart slip down in your pants in a fracture of a second and then make it all good again 😂😂😂. Had this many times. Hello Christian & Vera, I agree with all the items you said you would not modify on a Discovery 3 & 4. Apart from maintenance & repairs, which are unavoidable, I prefer to spend my money on functional items in/on my vehicle. Most of these items are purely personal preference, however they have a use, a purpose. Some items have the additional bonus of adding visual appeal, most do not. They look good in that the workmanship is good, but they are first and foremost functional for my intended use. Keep up the great videos & comments. You mentioned the temperature in Australia, A few days ago in Brisbane it was 28°C (82°F) at 9.00pm! Thank goodness for air conditioning. I can't wait to see snow. I have only seen it once. Thank you. Excellent content. The suspension really is magnificent. I'd love for you to do a walk through of: 1) The suspension components: position, faults, replacement procedure etc. 2) The suspension support circuit you described: when on a long desert trip and suspension failure OR limp mode, is NOT an option. A friend was just sold a compressor, and then suddenly he also needed a strut. Now he is so disillusioned he wants to go to the spring conversion.
@graemevass7452 жыл бұрын
You can buy a service kit for the compressor, i have done my Discovery 3 , it was quite easy and there is a few good videos on KZbin showing you how by the company that sells the service kit.
@Vera_and_Christian2 жыл бұрын
Getting a new strut is probably cheaper than a conversion. It also depends on the age and km of the car. Some maintenance has to be done, and a more powerful compressor can blow a rusty strut. That will probably happen when we service our air compressor as soon as the parts have arrived. Then we will do a walkthrough of the airsuspension. 😃👍🙋♀️Vera

Great video, love the discussions on the air bag system. I came across a random issue from previous repairs on a mall crawler, it had got a epb module at some stage and one of the cables was making light contact with one of the air pipes which put a practically invisible pine hole on it which was only findable with a smoke tester and luminous die…..! It had got a suspension pump but was still logging random faults if ever the vehicle was loaded up!

Love this. Am gradually working my way through your videos. I laughed at the start of this with your reference to warmth in Australia. That's where i am. Keep up the good work. I was a D3 owner for 8 years and 350Ks and now a 2012 Disco 4 with 250K. Loved them both but the D4 is a much better vehicle that the D3 in my opinion. Thank you.

Totally agree with your points and here’s what I did! Had a lovely D3 Tdv6 se for 7 years which was a great car but I sold it! So I bought a Defender 110 Td5 which is fantastic! And 6 months ago I bought a D4 V8 5.0 litre which I highly recommend! And an update on the 1977 petrol engine series 3 the rebuild is a success and love this car to bit’s as I do all my LandRover fleet all definitely different and awesome to drive! I love your sons metal work that is fantastic! Regards Toby

As always - great video and not just because I absolutely agree (excluding the part about the looks of the ….cruiser 😉) The air suspension is easily one of the greatest things (or even the greatest thing) on our Discoverys. It is - in my opinion - way better than the Landcruiser‘s suspension. Of course there may be some faults to be dealt with but I would say this: My D3 has now slightly over 200k km, it still has the first air-struts (a bit rusty but fully functional - I will replace them this year) and just gotten a new AMK-compressor (Miessler). I was able to replace the compressor all by myself outside in the driveway in the cold with just some regular tools even though I had to drill out a rusty bolt. As long as there are spare parts, I think you could replace almost all suspension components almost anywhere in the world on the go - that’s brilliant! Kaffeetrinkende Grüße!

I agree on the air suspension. It's magic! My Disco 3 has a height sensor issue and the ecu threatens to slow down but doesn't (thankfully!) I'm waiting on a Foxwell NT510 to diagnose and then also calibrate the new sensor. I changed the front air struts after 250k.

Totally agree about modifying or mapping the engine. You want more power go buy something different. Or just buy the V8 version of the disco. I have had 2 discos. The first a 3 with the V6 4L petrol. A great engine, very responsive, plenty of power and cheap to maintain. Unfortunately also a rather thirsty engine at an average of 16L/100Km. We now have an MY12 disco 4 with the 2.7L V6 diesel. Plenty of power we just miss the punch when pulling from a standstill the petrol had. Keep up the great videos guys
