I have a 1980 Land Rover Series 3 109" LWB troop carrier configuration (sold as a CL, Commercial Logistic) and petrol. Compared to my Jeeps of the same era it is hopeless for comfort and performance and reliability. But I am plugging away to get it running properly and usable because they are made like no other 4x4.

I bought a 109" in June last year with a canvas roof from the military and petrol 2.25 litre engine and running well, converted to a 9 seater and kept in a dry garage, great off road 40 mph on road and they are happy, if you find a decent one chassis and outriggers and bulk head wise also doors and frames rust wise I would advise you to buy it you will make money later and enjoy it for the fun it is on and off road. Winter snow or work they won't let you down.

I haven't seen a lot of 109's in the UK but heaps in SA. I'd like to own one again at some point.

It’s the best feeling in the world. I’m on my third Land Rover series 3, I’ve regretted selling the previous ones and my heart aches thinking that I sold them. You can’t help but put your heart and soul into them. I’ll keep the current one till the day I die.

Love the color. I'm a tad older then you. I almost bought a Series III in 1976. Well I just bought one and shall go pick it up like you just did. I don't have a 6 hour drive straight like you but I do have to go to NYC then back to New England. Mine needs to be put back together, so it's going on a trailer. Love British steel and aluminum.

Yep! fully infected stage 12 Landroveritis my friend & you're infected for life! I caught it in 1968 & about 25 series Landrovers later I've still got it more than ever. I've gotta say that there's nowhere in this world that I believe a series Landy looks more perfectly at home than in Africa! ANY part of your incredible continent. A very entertaining video my friend.

Heart rules the head. I need to save this Landy and pamper it. New engine, weld the chassis and bulkhead. Rebuild the gearbox axles and brakes. Four new tyres and fix the leaking tank and a rewire and that’s all it needs really. I WANT THIS ONE!

Great vid. Any tips for buying an old landy like 1986 series III. Have no idea what to look for.
@DaleReubin Жыл бұрын
Great question. I don't know a lot but what would be important to me is looking for originality. Owners tent to modify Land Rovers, especially the series Land Rovers. Make sure it's the correct engine for the model you're looking at and that the license papers are in order. Then check for rust in the bulk head, bottoms of doors, foot wells, chassis, crossmembers etc.. Fortunately they're very simple mechanically so just listen out for weird engine or gearbox noises. Maybe I should do a video.... Hope that helps
@julianlord26974 ай бұрын
They are unreliable junk that rust in hard to get to places. If that does not put you off, or the test drive, here are a few tips. Choose the model you want. Whilst bits swap over buying a 109" when you want an 88" will be a bit frustrating. The frame / chassis is prone to rust and these crates may have been coated in mud for decades. the outriggers and rear crossmember are bad culprits but can be cut off and replaced. Have real good look at previous repairs. New chassis are available and it is a medium size job to build your Landie back on to a new galvanised chassis. Bulkheads are made of steel and rot. They can be welded and again a medium size job to replace with a new one, still made. Outer panels do rot, it is aluminium rot. They also suffer damage. If there are spot weld marks down the flanks, that is a sign of an original panel. Bottoms of doors and door window frames can rot. Roofs leak, often badly. Paint is subjective. you can hand paint a Landy and no one would notice. use coach enamel and proper brushes and it would be better than factory. Fuel tanks rot and there may be several of them. Petrol and diesel engines are long lived and gutless. Transmissions and axles are not overly expensive to repair but go over them. Electrics are basic but often butchered. Have a good look at it or it will burn down. Not unusual for blower motors and wipers etc. to not work. Bear in mind this crate could have been taken apart a number of times, a monkey with a spanner and a screwdriver would have agodo chance of stripping it clean. Find everything that has been modded. Some will be bodges, some upgrades, work out what is not original. A Weber carb and electronic ignition may be valued, the power steering on mine is a boon. I have Defender door mirrors so I can see, the little wing mirrors are useless.

So, I am very familiar with the condition. I have just bought a partially re-built 109 truck with the wrong engine in it which apparently runs. Me and a mate are going to save it, It was about to become a sort of hot rod with LED lights - but that ain't happening to it now. It will be my third series. So, ya. I would like to see how you get on
