Interesting, as i remember old Swedish Volvo B-18 also had a Zenith Carburettor. The most common problems with them as i remember was the lack of real bearings for the airvalve wich makes the bearingpoints for the axle to wear out ower time and caus problems when the lid started wobbling. But maybe that's fixed on the newer models... The old models was pretty easy to take apart and back again.

That homemade tool for the clip ring is great. Iirc, there is also a special plier, for those who don´t want to make the tool. Without plier or tool, the install is a pita. I´m not sure, but it looks like the plastic bushings are a hair too small. Shouldn´t the brass rod turn a bit more freely? On the other hand, time will solve that by wear, i guess.

@drumbrakes2 жыл бұрын
Hang on - the one at the start 00:20 is clearly cast as a 361 V As in: three hundred and sixty one, followed by a roman numeral for 5 At 17:04 it's very clearly 36 IV Thirty Six followed by roman numerals for 4 I know you changed the bottom casting as part of the rebuild, but why have Zenith got 2 different versions of the name? Didn't they realise how hard this would make it for people trying to google instructional videos and rebuild kits 40+ years later?

@waynep3435 жыл бұрын
by the way.. one can measure the throttle shaft diameter. visit the engine rebuilding shop and beg them out of a thin wall valve guide liner.. usually 0.001" or 0.002" larger in size than the shaft. then you can find a drill just like you did that is 0.030 larger than the shaft and make your holes that size. for a 0.373 GM throttle body shaft . i use a .375 thin wall valve guide liner and a letter Y drill at 0.404.. cut the thin wall valve guide liner with a fine tooth saw clamped to a wooden dowel..
@stevek30365 жыл бұрын

Yeah, i bought a bearmach kit for my zenith, was useless. didnt even have all the jets, the mixture screw was the wrong thread. Unfortunately i also discovered that some wazzock has cross threaded the plug thing for the accelerator pump jet. I cant get the old jet out, and also cant get the plug back in, as the threads are knackered. What affect will that have on the carbs function? Landys running like a bag of dead cats, could this be the cause?

How do companies make money making these replacement kits? Someone has to take the time to either source each little part or manufacturing non-standard parts. Then they have to put it all together for the kit, find packaging, etc. And even then how many people are actually going to need them? There can't be more than just a couple hundred people who own and need to replace parts for this very specific automobile line. Are these just mechanics with an enthusiasm for older Land Rovers who do it for the joy of it, not caring about the cost and time? And this has to be done for every kit. It's amazing what's possible when you have 7 billion of a species.

The number of people here in the UK that installed Webber carb replacements on the promise of better running and better fuel efficiency...made _ZERO_ difference!
@samrodian9195 жыл бұрын
Geoffrey, it was a pity that you glossed over how you determined the proper axis of the throttle spindle when you rebored the body. The video on strip down showed how badly the spindle bore was worn on its thrust side. How did you determine the correct position when you attached the body to the angle plate for boring? Lovely Myford lathe by the way! Another nice piece of British engineering.
@hawr05 жыл бұрын
This is so amazing to watch, and educational! I love it :D
@celtic15224 жыл бұрын
When I worked at the carb shop we used to bore the body with a guided counter bore leaving a step in the bottom of the bore. That meant boring in from both sides. as for bushes they were coated with a Ramset superglue and bashed into their bores with a small ballpeen hammer, finished with a Stanley knife. Finish reaming was with a suitable hand reamer.

Hey, How do you align your piece in the lathe so the drill is parallel to the hole for the shaft and not drill at an angle?
@GeoffreyCroker5 жыл бұрын
Michael Beck Good question. I filmed all of that but cut it out. I just put a shaft in the chuck and basically fiddled around until I could move the carburettor back and forth without it catching or flexing the shaft. There is some room for error when the butterfly is screwed into the shaft at the end.
