great SERIES of videos , I have just got a 1975 swb that needs a few bits of welding and you've inspired me to have a go at doing it myself. Your place looks amazing !

Did you consider applying any rust converter before putting the red oxide on?

Great videos so far, I'm quite interested in that Bitumen you're using. Is it just straight Bitumen that you apply or is it something especially designed for cars ? Isn't that particularily sticky even when it's dried substentially ? Thanks again for your content, it's great for a young lad like myself to learn from guys like you.
@maximusironthumper7 жыл бұрын
Yep, just straight bitumen - I buy it in 25 litre cans from the farm supply store. It's commonly used on the underneath of canal boats which where I got the idea from. Places where the sun is on it like the rear crossmember dry to a hard matt black. On the rest of the chassis it still dries but it's softer and more shiny (an advantage as it doesn't chip). The only real downside I've found is that it remains vulnerable to solvents even once dried (even then it's easy to touch up, unlike 2-pack paint). There are better coatings out there, but personally I don't like using 2-pack paints and I think they are unnecessary (and out of keeping) for an old landy!

is there much difference between primer+bitumen and just bitumen by itself? i expect since it's so thick and flexible it doesn't care about primary adhesion so much.
@maximusironthumper2 жыл бұрын
I'd say it depends on the application, if it was somewhere it wasn't going to get bashed, by itself might be ok. On the landrover it's handy to have a different colour underneath for both a second layer of protection and to see where it needs a recoat after a few years of road use.

@@maximusironthumper a tin of bright yellow primer it is then! thanks Max!

hi, did you use gasless flux core wire for the welding or gas shield wire , I've got a bit of welding to do on the rear cross member for the landy's last ever mot in February , wish me luck .
@maximusironthumper7 жыл бұрын
I always use a CO2/Argon gas mix. Good luck!

They can be a bit of a "Trigger's broom" Not much of the original left. In that way they can go for ever.

What type of welder were you using, what metal did you fill in the gaps with and what sort of paints did you use. Thanks
@maximusironthumper7 жыл бұрын
A MIG welder, running at 130ish amps, infill was just bits of cleaned up scrap mild steel. Paint was an anti corrosive primer (zinc phosphate) with Bitumen over - I used Bitumen all over the chassis as it's cheap, very protective and soft so dosn't chip, but I may redo the very back in black paint as the Bitumen is somewhat pone to coming off on me if I lean on it!

It May not be a museum quality showroom restoration, but it hasn’t taken 3 years and thousands of dollars. It’s just at the other end of the spectrum and has got another old Landy on the road again! After the initial gasp of horror, I actually think there’s a lot people can learn from this guy. Some people would have spent 3 months and hundreds of dollars rebuilding that diff, but a bit of spot welding and some black paint and it’s good enough to get going again.
