Are you choosing between a 100 series and 200 series both with the coveted V8?
What are the differences between these two Land Cruisers?
The 100 series is the first Landcruiser to receive a V8 engine.
The early model 100 series received the 4.7L 230hp V8 engine (1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002) and in 2003 the hp went up 5hp to 235hp.
It was in 2006 that the Landcuiser powerplant was bumper to a 275hp vvti engine, and that extra 40 horses is definitely noticed with the butt dyno!
Once Toyota introduced the revamped Landcruiser 200 series, the 5.7L V8 with 383hp. A ton of power. This helped bump up the towing capacity from 6500lbs on the 100 series to 8000lbs with the 200 series.
There were a little over 2x more 100 series made than the 200 (~85k 100 series vs ~39k 200 series) so chances are that you will see more 100s on the market vs the 200.
As more and more off roaders discover the amazing capabilites of the Landcruisers, these SUVs will continue to find new life from the mall crawling moms, to the rock crawling that they were built to handle. Let's just say the new repurposed lives for these Landcruisers will be much appreciated, as you can only tame the beast for so long....

You did an excellent job covering all the details conveying distinctions that differnciate each vehicle. Your knowledge of both vehicles is very apparent, as well as helpful. I love them both. I happen to be the original owner of a 2003 (only 70k miles). Only issue that it had was a failed ignition cylinder on the steering column. That was unexpected; otherwise, bullitproof. I'm going to subscribe. Thank you.

Excellent comparison video. I understand that the reason Toyota opted for Timing Belts for the 1UZ, 2UZ engines etc is because they considered the rubber belts to yield a quieter, smoother, more refined experience. That's probably one of the reasons they were able to rev the original Lexus at full clip with full wine glasses 🍷 on top and not spill a drop. I think that's probably one of the reasons why the 100 Series is quiter compared to the chain driven 200.

Have both as well. My biggest gripe is I wish they would have carried over the arm rests & the wing windows from the 100 when they designed the 200. In the same vain the 200 has a lot of features I wish my 100 has such as more power, KDSS & a lot of new tech. The overhead view camera on my 2019 is super useful.

100 is the daddy. My biggest regret is selling my 56000 mile mint 100 td. But the prices rocketed in 2019 and I couldn't justify using it as an overlander when it was gaining around £800 per month in value! So I sold it for £20k and bought a mint Jeep WJ for 5k. Good 100 series are now £25000+. It was the nicest driving, smoothest, beautiful looking truck I'd ever driven : (

Very good knowledge about your trucks, I admire the love and the sense of pride that you have for both of them! I own a 2003 Land Cruiser 100 Series and what can I say about it that you already commented on it, in my case, I just love my faithful old Land Cruiser, still running like when I drove it out of the dealership, it has never let me down in any kind of weather, all I ever had repaired on it was the fact that the rear brake calipers had freeze in the open position due to all the bad winters in New Jersey, problem was fixed when I brought it to Florida and the couple of times when the timing belt was replaced due to the high running mileage (336.000 mls). As a note, I love the quality of the truck and the fact that has more the pay me back every dollar that I spend on it. I like to pick your brain about something that you touch on it in your comments. I want to buy another either a used Land Cruiser or a Lexus 570 not too old, this due to a statement you made as well in reference to avoid paying a small fortune for a new one. What say you? What year and model? Thanks!

On another note you live in a beautiful neighborhood and seeing your neighbo pull in that 02 LX with 300k on the clock, but lives in a million dollar community AND you kindly bragged about spending 25k rather than 95k confirms that the toyota/lexus is the way to go for smarter individuals in my opinion.

I think it’s crazy where 100 series prices have gone. I picked up 100 series 2 years ago as had never had a truck before and wasn’t sure I would like it, so at that time was much cheaper. Great truck and now I have a 200. If you really like working on your own car, then I can see a case made for the 100, but if you are taking it to a shop, might as well go 200. Personally prefer the styling of the 100, but the 200 is just such a nicer ride.

How about cabin noise level on the highway at 70mph? Never drove one, considering to buy it. The 150 Prado models are also nice cars. I know 80 are undestructable ones, just found one with manual transmission and 240k miles on pretty good condition and pretty cheap here in Europe because 80 are getting every year price go up. Manuals are like dinosaur, hard to find one.

The only negative for the 06-07 VVTI is the engine is more complex and any major repairs will cost you dearly. If cared for no problem, but a head gasket on the 06-07 is going to be very expensive. My shop charges just under $10K and they don’t make money. But they do t want to make customers made by charging the real cost. $14K at Stealership.

@CruisingTheLand
@CruisingTheLand 3 жыл бұрын
Thats low miles. Figure over 7 years and 15k miles a year, you'll be over 200k miles and likely still have a value of at least 25k. So 7 years and 100k miles, at about a depreciation of 15k is pretty cheap for a 80k vehicle! You are buying at an optimal time in the lifetime of that LC. Also, if you have a business, you can write off 25k in year 1! Worth to start a small side hustle business for the write off! Of you are at 40% on your next dollar earned, then 40% x 25k is 10k in tax savings... Making the LC a cost of 5k if you sell after 7 years in my example. Can't do the 25k write off if its a car.... only utility truck over 6000lbs.

I am planning to drive the LC from Florida to Alaska next summer. I drove the LC to Cincinnati this week (~1000 miles). It feels very safe and rock solid on the freeway. Effortless cruising. Averaged 17 MPG. Well worth spending a bit more on gas for the safety and comfort. Enjoy your informative videos very much. Keep posting more videos on the Landcruiser.

My question is regarding the 80 series and the 200 series and their retrospective diff locks, at some point I wanna get a landcruiser but not sure which would be better, the old rugged 80 series with the center diff lock or modern 200 with center and rear diff lock? Your impute and advice would be great, cheers 🙂
@CruisingTheLand
@CruisingTheLand 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Adam, great question... To clarify, the 80 series either comes with a center lock, or comes triple locked which means you can lock rear and front diffs. Not all 80s came with this option. The 100 series had the reak locker (no fronts) in the first 2 years, then only center diff lock from 2000 to 2007. However the 100 and 200 are equipped with ATRAC, which uses the braking system to stop the spinning wheel and give power to the motionless wheel. So there are no rear diff locks for the 200 series (in the US market) As well, the 200 series has the KDSS system for the suspension articulation decoupling.

No issues with time belt or whatsoever (change all 150k km). The 200 is a diesel. Ok more torque and I think it’s a beast!! But louder and not as smooth like the 2uz-fe . Definitely have a Toyota Dealer look at it. They will always find something.. a leak, rear main seal. Likely things that are livable and don't need immediate attention, but may help you with final negotiation.

Got to delete those running boards on the 100. I also removed all the rear seats, as it’s just the wife and I. I think I save about 1 mpg with them out. Any weight reduction goes a long way. Nice trucks! Mines a 99(217k) so I have both lockers ;) They 235hp doesn’t bother me, the motor sounds great and it’s powerful enough to merge into traffic. I also paid $5700 for mine.

My video was just befire Covid... After covid, prices went up. For multiple reasons... stay-cations where people were not able to travel, but could explore their own trails... so overlanding gained popularity, then also shortage in new cars and the fact that people are discovering the best overland built vehicles are Land Cruisers. Also they only made about 3k 200s a year and now no more for 2022 forward. Well, until Toyota comes to their senses... and copies a page out of the Ford Bronco playbook. My white LC will be for sale soon. Probably 28900, with 204k miles. But when maintained, these drive like new and go 500k++ miles.

The Michelin Defenders are top notch. They have a 75k mile warranty (they will be done by 40k miles) but American Tire will measure the highest tread on all 4 tires (rotate!) And prorate your next set. I have had 40% off the Michelins this way! People just dont know about this. But having tried less expensive brands throughout the years, that have road noise at their half life, I found you get what you pay for. The Michelins are best, and at 75% life, still roll smooth and quiet. Tires make all the difference on the quality of your ride! Plus better tires will stop faster, dissipate water better, and when inches and feet matter, goood rubber can save you from expensive fender benders!

Cool. just found this vid. I have an 04 LC with 265K on it. just spend some money (first time really) doing Powersteering and front CV joints. My only issue has been the cursed MFD. I've done the solder repair twice. 1st time lasted a year or 2. last time, well, a few days, Need to pop the unit out and do it again. I'm getting quicker at it. Done the refoam on the sub too. (and replaced other speakers, just because). Considering getting a new model, so your vid was helpful. Probably a 200 series, just can't decide which iteration. The prices climb a bunch with each newer year. (obviously). I like the 2016 design, but those are still in the 50's (unless high mileage). So who knows. There are never many listed due to low production, and the fact that most people keep them. 2008-2015, less than a dozen within 500 miles radius of me (DFW). Crazy. Anyway, thanks for the vid.

Great videos! I'm in the market for a Land Cruiser. Do you know which years are less likely to have rust problems in the frame and other areas? Also, if I get a diesel imported from Japan how much of an issue is getting service and repair work done? Thanks again for your hard work!

@@CruisingTheLand Sarasota, Florida and I'm still learning. So not sure which model. The main thing is I want a rig that's in really great condition so that I can then keep it in great shape. I would also consider a Japan market model with the diesel.

There is a 25 year import rule. So no 200s until 2033 ans 100s end of this year... for a 1998. So that brings you to 80 series for diesel.

What should you look for in these when buying a used one? I have my mind set on 2008 J200 with 165 000km (100 000 miles?). These came with 4.5L V8 diesel in Finland. Engine problems (mainly injectors) are known, but any problems not related to engine would be nice. Though if you have something about those diesel v8, I would be glad to hear it.
