The type of guy who calls you when your car is in his shop to tell you « Didn’t need to replace part ‘X’, just cleaned / adjusted and all is good » or my favorite one « Didn’t take as much time as I originally thought... » and charges you LESS hours than estimated!! @@daevid21 yes, any muffler shop can weld a muffler on it for around $100 and I found the entire wheel hub assembly with the bearing in it, just unbolt the old one and bolt the new one on for $122 with a warranty and it's not junk. Moog makes some good parts Also, we've all seen the kind of exhaust work "wizard" does. Watch his vw video. Lmfao. I wouldnt pay for that level of welding. I can do that myself

She's a beaut. I have a 98 Land Cruiser and my wife drives a 2006 LX 470. I just replaced the exhaust on the 98 last weekend, and my wife's last year. It was nice to see you post about the reliability. We have almost 500,000 miles between the two of ours. Another 240K on the LS 430. Toyotas are the best.

Am a proud owner of an 05 Landcruiser 100 series. She has 210k miles, drives absolutely great. Only problems she had was a leaking Rt axle seal, inoperative 6 cd changer, (I use a bluetooth accessory, so not worried), broken roof rack ends and a cracked windshield. Had timing belt and water pump replaced at 90k, replaced leaking power steering hose and plastic heater core pipe that disintegrated due to age.Otherwise, like the Wizard said, this vehicle out performs the Expeditions, Navigators,Escalades, Denalis, Surburbans and the Range Rovers. I am not trading her in for anything. Thanks Wizard. Great video as usual.

I love this Wizard's honesty. I have a 1998 LX470 that had it's belt and water pump, tensioner changed at 174K. The mechanic told me that the timing belt was still in good condition and told me that it doesn't need to be replaced. I told him to change it anyway. I still have the SUV and now has over 200k. No major repair to date. I love it more now than when I bought it.

@@Walterrinho every 100K more or less. It’s because when they fail it will usually destroy the engine, not worth taking such a big risk over a couple hundred dollars. I believe this is how it goes for most 4.7’s if they’re an interference engine

Those radiators are usually only good for about 100k. It should be seen as a maintenance item. You change the timing belt , do the radiator as well while your in there along with the water pump and tensioners.

I had a customer about 3 years ago. Bring me his 2004 Ford Expedition. He even bought his own motor and brought it to me with the truck. He wanted me to put the motor in because the original was making a knocking noise. I always check a car out before I change a motor. I like to understand why that engine blew up. Did it run hot, was it out of oil etc. But long story short I was checking the truck out before I proceeded to swap the engine and found the catalytic converter core had become dislodged and was bouncing around inside. Always go through a systematic investigation when diagnosing vehicles. I saved this guy thousands.

yes, here in the Netherlands I don't trust ANY independent shop. Most dealers are honest because they depend on it for keeping the franchise and if they cause bad press for the brand they lose it. But independents? Probably there are some honest ones, but most are crooks.

I trained as a Porsche mechanic (they call them "technicians" now). One of the first things Rolf taught me after school and in my apprenticeship, was to pretty much disregard the customer's diagnosis. "You are the mechanic" he would tell me. "It is your responsibility to find the genuine problem by testing and experience and then fix it properly. Be the craftsman.". The customer's diagnosis will often lead you down the wrong path, so listen to them, but take it with a grain of salt. The customer wants to show you that they know what's up, and many of them have been burned by unscrupulous mechanics, so they want to be involved. This is normal. Show them. Teach them. Be a wizard. I finally gave up being a mechanic in a shop and went off to work on power plant engines, fishing boats, airplanes and cranes because I was tired of being suspected of being a fraud and having to constantly defend myself from accusations of trying to sell them services they didn't need. I'm an honest mechanic, well trained and competent, but it finally wore me down. Bon chance.

Sometimes it is amazing the way in which the public (not all) but some treats a service tech or an employee on the retail industry. Totally unnecessary. It’s also true that it is easy to get ripped off by a mechanic. Try to meet half way, educate yourself on things that you own. At least be a little curious about what you drive and how it works. Too many people don’t have any idea how something works that they own and use everyday.

I live in Saudi Arabia and Land Cruisers are the only vehicles that can withstand the harsh conditions in the desert for long period of time. Basically anything has the Land Cruiser badge on it which also includes Land Cruiser Prado and the Land Cruiser 70 series (which we still get new in 2020)

I had an 06 LX470 and put 180kmikes on it till I rolled it in 2017. Countless roadtrips. Countless off road camping trips. Absolutely loved that car. Amazing vehicles. I Never did anything single mechanical repair to that car asides from brakes and regular maintenance. They don't make em how they used to. If any of y'all are looking into buying one of these I HIGHLY recommend it. But please if you are just step up and get an LX470. Much nicer car inside and out and the hydraulic suspension makes it that much better.

@@fredbrackely Yeah i know someone with a 110, its a pretty solid car kept up with all the cruisers and patrols and stuff but the only let down was the motor. The owner swapped a 3.9l rover v8 and its an absolute weapon. I'd say the only let down with the defenders are motors (on some models) but even then its not like engines go all the time.

Me and my buddy were gonna do it, but I thought that maybe I could bring it to you for a repair. You could make a video about it. It has over 330,000 miles and runs like a champ.

You are the man Car Wizard! Love your channel. Wanted to quickly chime in to say that I had my muffler blow out on my 03 LX 470 a few years back. Was short on cash and rather enjoyed the V8 rumble so I let it ride a few months before repairing. Well the hot exhaust blowing out where it wasn’t supposed to melted the wiring harness that controlled the AHC hydraulic suspension in the rear of the car. Cost me a lot more money and time trying to chase down why my suspension had defaulted into sport mode. Bottom line is, don’t let issues linger as they will create more problems. Thanks for all the great videos and insight wizard!

Ah, no they don't. I'm up to 535000 on mine and away to replace the bearings just because I'm doing new rotors. they have only been adjusted 3 times over the life of the car and it is a 20 minute job. I have checked them yearly but zero issues.

@@8507duke you've missed the point. The maintenance calls for repacking. That's like not replacing spark plugs at 100k, because there's no misfire. A mechanic would, and has been fired for such things.

Had a Toyota Corolla once with the mighty 4AGE engine that was running rough, replaced the plugs, checked the entire ignition system, removed and cleaned the injectors, checked the value clearances, still the same. Turned out it was simply the front engine mount was put in backwards probably after a clutch replacement. It had bound up and was effectively a solid mounts. Put it the right way around, car ran smooth as new.

This is why Car Wizard will continue to be blessed with good fortune. He could have EASILY told this customer that the engine needed a full rebuild. But instead, rightfully said it needed a $100 muffler. Even did a thorough once-over of the entire vehicle and found a few more maintenance items. MUCH respect to him and skills!

Change the Heater Hose Tee's! They are ready to crumble by now, and when they go they will take the motor with them. It's an immediate evacuation of the coolant system, and the aluminum heads will be screwed by the time you notice the over heating.

On the valve covers! Just a tip since I've played a lot with these engines, the bolts are usually loose on the covers, a little snugging and the seaping stops 👍

ive got a 2012 i bought used a year ago love that vehicle and wizzard will think im crazy i bought it at 154,000 miles but toyotas are tanks. like he said they dont leak i took it for and oil change they said at its oil filter cartridge location its leaking oil yes u can see something that looks like oil but i keep and eye on the oil level its not even went down. i did do the brakes on mine my pads were bad i was almost metal on them got rotors and pads for all 4 corners as i wanted them all done at the same time now that was hard my driver side pins for the pads were coroded in the caliper that was not fun getting out.

Yeah I was confused, I was listening for a knock but the only thing I was thinking was; "Are they really that loud normally?" "Where is the knock?". I had a car once with an exhaust leak, it had a clamp rust out and snap off and it sounded just like this, although it was by the upper exhaust.

yambo59 AIUI, the V8 engine is produced in USA. Unless just the diesel is... hmm maybe it is just the diesel. I heard that a US plant is stopping making the diesel V8 and as a consequence, the V8 diesel is disappearing from Australia. Toyota's biggest weakness was North American winters. Plenty of box frame Tacos rusted out. The box frames were stronger than C frames (hence why trucks like the Hilux could take a beating), but salty water from the roads ate them out.

Honestly in the Middle East we have loads of LCs legit it’s a staple. We have the 70 series in 2-4door and the pickup truck version. i6 and v8 engine options but diesel is getting more common in the past 3-4 years too but gas is king for now

I took my old car into an oil change shop for an oil change ages ago. I had topped off the coolant a week or so earlier, because it kept getting low and I knew something was wrong. They showed me some coolant that was in the engine compartment and without checking anything out said that I needed a water pump and quoted me a ridiculous price. I took it to a mechanic who I was told was very honest, he looked at it, called me and said that it was just a loose hose clamp he tightened it and didn't charge me a thing. I tried to give him something but he wouldn't take it.

I had a Plymouth voyager that had an antifreeze leak. I took it to a new mechanic that had just opened on the corner of my street. He told me there’s a pipe that runs under the intake manifold to the water pump that probably rusted out. Said it would be about $250 fix. When I went to pick it up he told me it’s $50, was a preformed hose that attaches to that tube nothing more. I’ve been going to him ever since and I recommend his shop when I’m asked about a mechanic.

My 4.7 had leaky valve covers because of loose valve cover gaskets. I'm sure after almost 20 years and 200,000 miles it could use new gaskets but I tightened the valve covers and no leak. That was 10,000 miles ago

I’ve got 2 first gen Tundras with the 4.7 in them. You are exactly right...10mm socket & extension and 10 minutes and there will be no more leak

Thanks for your honesty car Wizard. I own pretty much all my cars, trucks and mini van since 1980. Many of them last for a very long time. For some I sold it to buy a new one or give it away to friends. The oldest on is 1996 4runner Limited 4X4 (300,000 miles) still running today (2023). Body and frame are still original and no rusting. My newest purchased was 2021 Rav4 Limited. My 2004 Tundra Limited Double cap (230,000 miles) still running like new. 2014 Camry Sport , 2019 Camry Sport, and 2017 Lexus IS350 are pretty good condition. If you want a reliable cars and truck, you can buy one see how it work for you.

I found one mechanic that I trusted a few years back and I still go to them, even tho I've since moved and it's 35 min farther. When you find a mechanic that does good work and you trust.... don't ever leave lol. Also Toyotas are so solid, I won't ever buy anything else at this point.
