It may be a breach of Third Line Forcing provisions of Australian Consumer Law to sell you the spare part only on condition of buying with the vehicle. You also bought the vehicle for towing and if they refuse to sell you the part you also can’t tow which is misrepresentation under consumer law. It would be worth a written complaint to the ACCC or a phone call to someone senior in the dealership. Probably poor training of the staff member involved.

It’s not a spare part though, it’s an accessory that is bought in, in limited numbers to service new vehicle purchases.

DIY will never be covered under warranty, if you put a Camry towbar tongue on a RAV4 why would you expect them to cover it???

Not our experience at all from our Shepparton Toyota dealer. We purchased 12 pin wiring harness, brake controller separately and a tow bar blanking insert.

Sounds like your issue is with Toyota WA (Perron Group) rather than Toyota Australia. Seems there is no such restriction in the eastern states.

Thank you for making this video. It’s a shame that after spending 10s of thousands of dollars to buy this vehicle and importantly to initially committing to ordering it without seeing it in the flesh and not even having a brochure, Toyota is like this to people like yourself. I’m thinking maybe Toyota doesn’t have a lot of these kits, and wants to for now provide them to customers who want it as an option, so they can make extra money. When l can afford to get my Prado, hopefully in a couple of years time, l will be as a tech, doing this install myself. Also the car might have come with a cover that is about half have the size of the cover you removed to relieve the tow bar, that covers above the tow hitch which makes the car look a bit neater in that area. If you don’t have this cover it maybe for those who have had that kit installed. Also from my understanding the Toyota trailer sway control feature, is that it works by applying the vehicle’s brakes. You should be able to check with Robert Pepper of L2FSBC, on this feature, as he is very knowledgeable on these things. He also has a video on this feature as well.

Depends on braking system you can get trailers with hydraulic brakes up to 2000kg

There is no brake controller included. You can Install one without running any wires to the rear. Plug and play driver side that's why you have that blue wire on the plug which runs to driver side + wire for brake light with diode included if you get PZQ8560B16 harness.

From my point of view, the two biggest failings of the 250 design are the despicable luggage space and the towbar design. The vehicle itself is very good looking and certainly seems to be very capable and it does hold a lot of appeal. The USA/Australian/Japan towbar design (especially the ugly bulging cover) is still far better than the European design which looks as if it has a lean-to shed on the bumper when it is covered. What the hell were Toyota thinking?!!

I don't know how different the mounting bracket is however you could try Lexus. The GX550 is a very similar car (apart from the obvious, the engine) and they had plenty of stock a month or so ago. I will see if I can track down a part number for you. Installation is very straight forward, drop the spare wheel, mount the plug to the bracket, mount the bracket to the car, plug in the cables, push in the cable retainers, put spare wheel away, and you are done bar the testing.

Hmm. Maybe a GX550 kit won't fit. The part number is PZQ6160600. It doesn't share a part number with the Prado so I am guessing the rear bumper trim might be too different to accommodate the same mounting bracket.

What dealer did you talk to mate... they lied. As an ex accessory fitter for Toyota it is not uncommon (especially in 300 series) for customers to buy accessories separately to avoid luxury car taxes. The only issue you will have is the accessory warranty if not fitted by a certified Toyota accessory fitter or technician.

Toyota do a genuine (Redarc tow pro) for the Prado 250. PZQ8500A00 Module kit + PZQ8560B16 harness. The bracket for the trailer plug part # PZQ6160592 (currently cant be ordered) Disappointing that your local dealer didn't sell you the tow bar and harness. Very odd... there is plenty of stock nationally

@@kdogauch yes appears that way. It is Redarc, but might have different software/firmware or options, i didn't look to far into it other than opening the box to see what brand it was. Toyota have made a plug n play harness so install is simple, plus brackets

Why are you wasting your time buying oil at a dealership is the first question when you can buy excellent quality oil at any outlet that will MORE than do the job example PENRITE and genuine filters of all descriptions are available on eBay way cheaper than a dealership. Had same run around with brand new lexus gx550. Annoying. Bought a hayman reese aftermarket and had to play sherlock holmes to even source the wiring harness from lexus....

@@Squidley1972Well it wouldn't be your off the rack EV. It would have to be a specialty job. It's much easier to do in an EV because it doesn't need air. You just have to waterproof the electrical and electronics.
