I remember flying in a 200 into Austin, TX many years ago. Upon landing, a female passenger sitting next to me, cut the circulation off in my right arm when the reverse thrusters engaged, thinking the plane was coming apart.

lol! I wouldn't try that. However, reversers are foolproof, and will only activate when the squat switch in the landing gear has activated. The only way they will activate when airborne is accidentally. This happened to an Asian 767 many years ago with catastrophic results.

That thrust reverser was absolutely GORGEOUS!! The most beautiful thing anyone could set their eyes on. I wish I could take one home with me and hang it on my wall. It's just a friggin piece of metal that goes up and down, people. What the heck's so "awesome" about it?

However, the B737 beats the MD-80 when the B737 was re-engined with the CFM 56-3 engine due to the larger bypass ratio of the CFM engine fan case and VIGV at the compressor. One can only imagine the power that will be achieved in next generation engines with geared fans, variable geometry inlet cases, and variable geometry inlet compressor and turbine guide vanes.

Not quite. The MD80 uses a later version of the JT8D, with a much larger fan (and consequently a much larger nacelle).

No MD80 flew with a V2500 or a BR715, but the prototype did get a UDF on one side late in its life. The MD90 had the V2500, but that's a different airplane (and the first to be certified as anything other than a DC-9). The MD95/717 used the BR715, but it's much closer in overall design to a DC-9-41 with some MD87 parts bolted on.
