HTTP(S) is just one of a number of transport layer protocols, so I’m sure there is quite a bit that isn’t being encrypted.* (relatively topical nerd’ish description at the end of this comment) Personally, I’m not a fan of the language VPN companies use when they sponsor videos. I get they are trying to not confuse the average internet user, but their claims are over the top. Every time I hear a plug about them I cringe inside. * The drop (‘internet’) from their ISP to the internet, is almost certainly unencrypted. That’s all layer 2-3, while it can be encrypted, I’m guessing they aren’t paying for MPLS or dedicated fiber between the ISP (i.e. PacketLight or some other vendor in that space. HTTPS (SSL/TLS w/perfect forward secrecy, hopefully not SSL, it’s old and TLS is way better).

If people would just do a little bit of searching, they would know that we have a pretty well encrypted internet and that vpns are a sort of a scam (at least for what they are advertised for). RyuRenyama VPNs are useful to bypass a company’s geographic restrictions, which can be useful. There are too many data sharing treaties between countries, especially the five eyes. Like any security, you’d need to look at what you’re trying to prevent and what trying to prevent that will look like (both from a network and local machine perspective). This is especially true with VPNs, because they need greater permissions do do what they do (raw sockets/routing/yadda). Like you said, they’re a bit of a scam. Tracking pixels, aggressive device fingerprinting, which used to be seen as something only attackers did. Now though, there are companies that focus on just that. I had a bunch of conversations with vendors about getting TLS/1.3 ephemeral keys out of memory (for IPS/IR reasons). After they talked through their process, I asked them if they were just mimicking the rootkits of a decade or so ago, their response was “yes, but we don’t call it that”. Just like attackers learn from defenders, defenders learn from attackers.

Just can't get enough of Steve. I wish there'd be a documentary about Steve's history and his lifelong dedication to perpetuating artistic lifestyle. I know there is a full length podcast with him on Corridor Cast, and that's why we need more because even after an hour of listening to him I feel like there is still so much that he's left untold.

Is no one going to point out how there is just a master chief helmet in the trash? Like I’d take that thing for airsoft. 😂

I don't think that it's trash, but a trash can being used as a storage bin.

Jake has no clue how encryption works... SSL cert (lock) icon next link is all you need for any website. VPN is completely different and I highly doubt they use it for uploading videos or connecting to google/youtube accounts; or any other website service that requires to be in US.

I work with structured cabling and I can honestly tell you building inspections take exactly that long and they are frustrating as hell. If one single cable touches the wire grid they fail the entire building it’s insane. That’s how much power they have.
