As human beings we’re all nuanced. There’s only one version of us so trying to seek 100% compatibility with someone is unrealistic, even in friendships. This isn’t to say that compatibility is unimportant but it’s also not the end all be all. How you are able to navigate through your differences and understand each other encompasses much more of the relationship dynamic. This is why you hear the term opposites attract. Open paper, two things or two people may heavily contrast but in practice they may work together really well.
@maura_the_rose
@maura_the_rose 2 күн бұрын
As long as you’re attracted to each other and have enough in common to do some things together… it’s okay to have different interests. The lifestyle thing gets me though, I have a really hard time living with ppl who aren’t active or are messy 😬 It would be fine in the beginning but I think it’s important to know the things that you really can’t stand in a roommate… bc the honeymoon phase will wear off eventually 😂
@naut_nigel

But if I'm not attracted to the person, I wouldn't *want* the relationship to work. And attraction to me includes things like personality, shared interests, etc..
@rattling.casket
@rattling.casket 2 күн бұрын
They're not saying it's Entirely unimportant,, the study is trying to show folks that it's not nearly as important as the majority of people believe.
@Isredel11
@Isredel11 2 күн бұрын
I think the study is more saying people need to adjust what their focus is rather than trying to treat it like a college application. If you’re being put off by someone because you have no shared interests and are having a difficult time creating a connection, then the important bit is the part where you’re put off, and not that you don’t have shared interests. Conversely, if you’re having a great time with someone and have a good feeling about them, don’t get bogged down by the details/checkmarks they don’t have. Don’t try to find an arbitrary reason you shouldn’t try to have a relationship with someone when you are having a good connection. Obviously this excludes red flags, which should be putting you off in the first place, or wholly incompatible life plans (such as children, or one person wants a serious relationship but the other doesn’t, with neither open to the other) The point is how you _feel_ about the relationship and the person is a better diagnosis and prognosis of your time together than how many personality quirks or interests you like about someone. Or really, the study is showing data that contradicts the toothbrush method.

Oof, that "fun fact" at the end about that doctor.... Good thing our society doesn't do anything like THAT anymore.... At all.... Ever!
@Livingvapour
@Livingvapour 2 күн бұрын
He was shamed because every other doctor didn’t want to face the fact that they killed hundreds during their long careers because they simply didn’t wash their hands and it was either he had a mental break down from being told he’s wrong or everyone else had a mental break down for all the lives lost because of something so simple. Once that generation of doctors retired everyone basically accepted it. Was a weird time.

oh so a successful relationship requires two people that can ignore each others differences and have the perseverance and self awareness to focus on building the relationship instead of the little things, so toxic partners are out of the questions, they need to be reasonable, well tempered and capable of seeing the whole picture, huh it sure sounds like it matters who you choose as a partner, maybe "compatibility" is what needs to be redefined.

I don't think i'm agreeing with the conclusion that a persons personality only accounts for 5% but i'm not acquainted enough with scientific articles to challenge it. _"for a relationship to work"_ is not satisfying enough for me anyway. I vehemently agree, but frankly, it's adjacent to age old teachings. If we faithfully adhere to noble virtues, why wouldn't we be able to succeed in relationships? Honesty, courtesy, integrity, compassion, courage, wisdom, perserverance, self-control/discipline, humility, vigilance, patience. How does it relate? I wager that it's hard to deny that someone with these qualities would not value relationship over a, probably taught by social media, criteria list. They'd probably also fulfill the more meaningful items on that list as well anyway.

that's how I've always felt. chemistry makes a successful relationship. If you enjoy talking to each other and you have chemistry then youll probably have a successful relationship. except if your ticking off boxes is a way of telling you you don't have chemistry that is an issue. if you have chemistry with someone you shouldn't need to tick off a box. men don't do that because chemistry is not an issue for men. men have chemistry with most women. they just don't have conversational chemistry with all women.

What if you have these, but your partner is ruthless. Has no empathy and can't see the other side. Not only for other's, but to you too and your friend's? Difference is they keep you around under their roof. They claim they love you due to your personality. Everyone else is cut-throat. All you need to do is not question them. Let them do whatever they want. Can you have a relationship with someone who has no empathy in this situation? Is this healthy? Female friend's claim you have to put in the effort even when you are presented with this.

Relationships are personal and private, I guess, a relationship is only between two persons and or the persons involved in the relationship only. Why not have a cheat chat about what should be a perfect relationship? A walk to the park, a hike, a bike ride, maybe a game of basketball, etc. 💬😅🥰💫💎

And exactly for that are lists. Like he needs to match your wants for a family, but also your wants for chores splitting, the finaces you want to persue [if one person wants to be a millionar and the other just kind of vibe and have enogh money, they might be short term attractive but long term too different], same with just any goals that'll involve your long term parter
