It's not so easy as your video shows! I've pulled that wire loop with all my strength and the handbrake will not release. Why would this emergency park brake come on in the 1st place? Has the car detected a problem with the brakes and decided to apply the park brake so that I can't move it? My car is a discovery 4 2013 model. I pulled the electronic handbrake on outside of the house and it made a screeching noise. Some people are saying I need to have the car wheels up off the ground to be able to release this stupid emergency park brake! Others are saying I need to apply 220kg of force and it should make a loud bang if I've done it correctly! Others are telling me to cut the handbrake cable but unsure if that will free the wheels! When I try pulling away the car only dips down at the rear passenger wheel which I think is the only 1 wheel that is locked. Same when I try to pull away in reverse, the passenger back end goes higher than the drivers side. I'm being told I need new discs shoes pads cables and a new epb unit... All sounds a bit drastic from some folks and from other folks they say it's not that drastic. I only had new discs pads shoes and a service in April for its MOT. The new discs are carbon fibre like a plastic. Could it be these new discs that are causing a problem?

If the electronic parking brake fails, the emergency release loop can be pulled so in theory you can drive to the garage to get it fixed. If it’s not releasing when pulled the breaks mechanism itself must be seized and it’s not fault on the electronic system.

Mine literally just seized up. It was making a sound like a dying Darlek, and I couldn't go forward or backwards. I wasn't as graceful as in using the little cable, I just basically turned the LR4 ignition off and back on, selected reverse and floored it LOL. It soon let go. New note to self: don't use the parking brake switch until I get around to fixing it - maybe next year hehehe.

I’ve had to do this a couple of times - park brake actuator packed up. It needs an ALMIGHTY yank to release it. Rather than using the hook thing I passed my screwdriver shaft through the loop and used that as a handle. Easy on the flat, hard on a slope. Protect your pawl - in neutral, foot firmly on the brake pedal, preferably get someone else to yank the cable. Releases with a big thud - no doubt at all whether you’ve done it or not.
