Been up old man of coniston twice before, on both occasions we were clouded out and had rain. We used the old miners track which takes you past the old/remains of the mines up to a lake, and then on up to the summit. First time up we had a really heavy rain storm before setting off and sat in the car waiting for the worst to pass, which it did, then on the way up we were treated to a ‘rainbow wall’ across the valley, and further up I got a lovely pano with broken storm cloud and rainbows with multiple lakes in the pano. A few years later we returned and did it again and it was torrential high wind & rain conditions, but I got some atmospheric B&W’s around the old mining ruins in the rain/mist. Despite the conditions, it was a lovely walk both times, sadly, I still have not seen the view from the top, only cloud both times!

Here in the states pay campgrounds are filled with people who have an affinity to pull their houses behind them with huge pickup trucks. From your drone shots it seems more people enjoy simpler tent camping than they do here. But, a shower and a proper toilet are nice luxuries every now and then, so I tolerate the barking dogs and screaming children when I must.

Ah yes the great American camping style of bringing your second home out to the campground so you can watch tv in a different place. Always gives me a bit of a chuckle when in a site next to one of those in my self-contained 4runner. Usually come across this in National Parks as those are the only places I "splurge" on an expensive campground. Typically I try to find primitive campgrounds that are out of the way for around $10, especially when I don't know what the dispersed camping situation is in the area when traveling and those will usually avoid the house camping style and get into a quieter more down to earth style of camper.

These types of video, I.e. no photography, are really as important and interesting as these times you get epic conditions and images. The problem is Thomas that you have just publicised camping in a van in a car park in the lake district national park which is not allowed. This summer has been an absolute nightmare for it with very little enforcement unfortunately. The rules are there for a reason and there have been several occasions this summer where people have parked vans/motor homes in lay-bys passing places and the emergency services have been unable to get through, this has led to a death where the ambulance service could not get to someone in trouble. Apologies for pouring a downer on your video and I haven't given it a thumbs down but this has to be said, people should pay to use the designated campsites unless free camping above the highest visible dry stone wall. Now this comment will no doubt get hammered by those who don't understand but as a Cumbrian who frequents the national park at every opportunity we must all respect the rules of the park.
@andyjsmith19813 жыл бұрын
@andygll38 but are not talking about lorry drivers, from memory I don't recall seeing many lorry drivers parked in the car parks and lay-bys this summer in the lakes. We are talking about people who are in Vans camping over night in car parks and lay-bys in a national park that prohibits it. We don't all agree with all the laws but if we don't abide by them just think of the end game and what this could lead to.
@andyjsmith19813 жыл бұрын
And I agree with you about having designated areas, that would be a massive step forward. 👍

So you didn't get a decent shot so what?. you had a great scouting mission and found a decent campsite in the process. Your subscribers like to see things other than photography, van life, gear etc.. even though its a photography channel, people like your weekly vlogs regardless of subject matter, if that makes sense. You do keep it real, wins and fails and I like that. Never think its a fail if you don't capture the perfect shot, photography is more of a journey, rather than a destination.

My new drinking game: how many times Tom actually parked his car for 30 seconds of B roll: - Drives up, parks, walks out past the tree to plant his camera, returns to car - Drives up to the spot, does broken U turn, stops - Gets out of the car, retrieves the camera from behind the van, moves it to the front of the van, returns to the car - Repeats the entire approach to the parking spot and broken U-turn to capture the move with a viewpoint from in front of the car's final position Three times parking the car and I've got a hangover.

There are also cons to Wild Camping, one of which is that there is no contribution to the local economy. But another is that there is no regulation and whereas campsites can only take bookings up to their agreed limit, any number of people can wild camp. Here in Cornwall that has been a real problem this year with camper vans in seemingly every lay-by adding to an already over-crowded county. Not saying don't do it, but if you do it, do it responsibly like everything else.

It's definitely a lesson in making the best of the scene you have rather than lamenting the scene you don't have. When you can practically reach up and touch the clouds, there's definitely possibilities for a great photo. Clouds wrapping over a foothill mountain with mountain goats or sheep in the foreground can make a wonderful environmental portrait that captures a bit of the natural beauty of the UK.

Another great watch Thomas. What a stunning location. I don't do campsites when they are really busy as I feel I cant film with tons of people watching me. Doesn't always bother me but it does when it disrupts my filming. Love the structure of the landscape with the falling mist. It was a really atmospheric shot! Really nicely captured. There have been countless times I have been up the mountain and it's began to rain! Not bad when you got waterprooof's on but for me I didn't and I ended up getting drenched. Did you build that little seat try by yourself Thomas? Such a cool idea and I can totally relate to my seat getting covered in camera's, lens caps and such. Ive seen in another video the portable fire pits. They look so useful. I have had countless hikes where the weather has not been on my side and Ive come down with some images but nothing special. As long as I learn something while out with my camera it's not a wasted day. Omg check that out for a tortilla. ha. Impresive considering you are only using the ridge monkey. I'm glad you explained what it was as Ive noticed you using it a lot lately in your video's. I'll soon start calling you Gorden ha. £13 a night with your van is quite reasonable. Call that 4 weeks ago and that would of cost you a lot more. I grudge paying for sites as well. I ended up driving to Torrent Gorge in Mid Wales. 2.5 hour drive each way and the hike of course. By the time I got back to my motor. I could of very easily done with a site to relax. Weather can change everything when out on location. We have that harsh winter low sun on its way soon which I dread! But first and foremost we have Autumn around the corner. One of my favourite times of year to capture the colours changing (With some unpridictable weather of course) I really enjoyed watching this Thomas. Slightly jealous over your van but Im on the look out. Look forward to the next video. Keep up the great work Thomas.

What lens are you using on the hike up the mountain? Seems like a wide-angle, and there was NO corner-wobble when you did the whip around to show where you were going... Pretty impressive if a wide-angle lens! Considering the day's photography being acceptable or not; any day I come away with a good image is a good day. If I have to tweak it to make it what I saw, I'm good with that; it's photography. Your videos are so moment: by that I mean they are not only in the moment, but they appreciate, *applaud* the moment, and I truly feel THAT is why we do what we do. We try to capture and applaud the moments we encounter in our trek through life with our cameras. I'm finding your videos to be relaxing in their style and approach to how you set up, plan, go about your shoot. Wonderful and informative and very appealing. Thanks again for an awesome respite on my Friday evening in California. You inspire me to get out and shoot.
