Whilst Landscape Photography, I shoot seascape scene, and vary the Shutter Speeds. A quick look at how different shutter speeds can dramatically change your image with a moving body of water, such as sea (or a river). Experimenting with anything form 1/500th - all the way to 30 seconds and a few variations somewhere in between. Find the 'Sweet spot' shutter speeds your chosen scene and see how it can really add effect and drama to you shots, rather than having distracting elements in them. Also have a play around and see the differences only 0.2 of a second can really make. = )

Lovely hypnotic start to this film Ewan with your ever engaging and timely narration. I keep thinking of trying some of these long exposures because as you know, I am a big fan of your images and maybe I will, when I head back to Harris in the autumn. Not one for copying a style but when it inspires you this much, it's hard to ignore it! Great film as is always the case with you and so very different from the films I make...much appreciated!

Hey Simon, thats a nice thing to say buddy. The thing im still learning is the mixing it up a little and not just always a ten stop at f11 each time. Each one demands a difference feel and effect. im nearly there with it. You should try them in Harris, and we shall have a proper go when we get to Orkney. Maybe a composite image of E L Exp for the sea and a much shorter one of the sky? I dont do that but might give it a shot. Love your stuff to though buddy. One day - trip out together! = ) Looking forward to your next one. Regards Ewan

Being as landlocked in the UK as one can be but having my ancestry on Orkney I have a huge attraction to the sea. Nothing gives me greater pleasure than being near it, let alone photographing it. No two tides or waves are ever the same and I could spend all day playing with shutter speeds and compositions. If only I could live nearer to it. Great Vlog on the effects different shutter speeds can make Ewan 👍🌊

Interesting! I really like minimalist photos but I’m not a big fan of long exposure photos in my own photos as there seem to be so many people doing it nowadays that it’s almost become (to me) a bit cliched. My favourite shots that you took here are the ones at 1/2, 1/3 and 1 second as they still have a sense of reality in them as you can still see the overall movement of the sea within the shots. Having said that, I really like your last shot in the video so clearly I’m contradicting myself!! From one Scot to another in NZ, well done on another very interesting video.

I have a similar setup for my panorama’s… A leveling base, a indexer, a tilt-head instead of a ball-head, and a Nodal rail…. It’s the perfect pano setup!

Thanks Keith. I do like the LEs indeed. I am an ambassador for NISI and SIRUI, and whilst used to use LEE, stopped on account of the global blue cast. I soend quite a bit of time getting my Kelvin temperature accurate, the Big stopper was causing me some issues. Maybe its just em and my workflow though! E

Fantastic way to start a cold crisp Sunday morning! Great to see another of your very well done VLOGS. There is so much that can be changed and affect an image with just this one aspect. I enjoyed how you gave us examples as you worked through the process of selecting the right shutter speed for an image. Thanks for sharing some of your knowledge.

Hi Ewan, an interesting experiment for sure. The scene & light of course dictating the effect of the differnt shots. Me personally , when at the sea I love to get enough speed that it slows the motion of the water but retains texture and form - the shot of 1/3 at 13.40 would have been my fave speed for this, a lovely example for me. I was thinking about the minimilism of the long exposures and you took the words out of my mouth in your summing up, nice to see my thought patterns are not far removed from yours in that respect. Enjoyable watch over my morning tea - just been back from a sunrise shoot (or lack of) where I didn't take the camera out of the bag - just nice to see that sun rise come over the morning as we head from summer to autumn here - I was out for a temperature innversion but alas not today. Hope your well. Btw, in your sea summary at the beginning, the one thing that always resonates with me is the almost "white noise" of the incoming waves, hypnotic at times, something I love. :)

Hi Alan. I think I agree that in that scene, or these two scenes = the 1/3rd shutter speed is that sweetspot indeed. Its amazing to see the difference the extra minuscule 0.2 of a second made. It actually took me two days to do this vid, because the first day that i went to film it.... I just got caught up watching the waves and hearing that same hypnotic noise - i forgot to shoot and missed my light! LOL. Sorry to hear about your no sunrise today. Its not always as easy as it sometimes appears on these videos. Hope you are well buddy. (1st day of Spring for us)! = ) Ewan

Hi Ewan, I've just subscribed to your channel. I'm from Tasmania, Australia and love landscape/seascape photography and am learning the craft. In these images you are taking with different shutter speeds, are you using aperture priority or shutter priority or manual mode?
@EwanDunsmuirImages
@EwanDunsmuirImages 4 жыл бұрын
HI Geoff. Thank very much for the subscription! = ) I always shoot in manual mode to ensure consistency when metering. My method is, everything manual include kelvin (temperature). Especially with panos - if you have it on AV/TV - its likely to meter differently across your series of frames. Hope that helps. = ) Ewan

Really enjoy your videos. I have seen them all, some multiple times. Base on your videos I tried to do some long exposures on water this summer. Not easy being land locked in the Canadian Prairies. But we have some beautiful mountain lakes not too far away in the Rockies. Got really lucky with one where I was just trying to smooth the waves on a very windy lake but ended up getting the sunset reflecting down off the clouds onto the water. It's probably my best shot of the year and just wanted to say thanks and share: files.laqua.ca/images/DLFF6473-2.jpg
