Landscape Photography on Medium Format Film & Learning from Mistakes

I went out to Chinook Pass to take landscape images of Mt. Rainier and the surrounding valleys. I brought my Pentax 6x7 and Bronica SQ with Portra 400 and Portra 800 for later in the evening. It was a great day of shooting, but I was a bit disappointed when I got my scans back as I wasn't too pleased with the colors and detail of the photos. This was my own fault as I decided to shoot in the middle of the day. The Bronica also ended up having a light leak which was unfortunate. Sometimes I think I can get away with shooting in less than ideal lighting because I am using film, but this is clearly not the case. Only thing to do is learn from the mistakes and apply the knowledge next time I go out to shoot.

Recently found your channel and I’m loving all the videos I’ve seen so far. I started shooting film over a year ago as well but the development and scanning was nearly cost prohibitive so I started developing and scanning at home. Developing your own film is almost magical the first few times with the surprise of pulling your newly developed film out of the tank. At home B&W development is pretty forgiving and not too expensive-give it a shot!

Shooting particularly color film in mid-day sun, and at higher altitude, is a challenge because the shadows are harsh and the lighting is flat. Not much you can do with those long vistas. Even a polarizer isn't going to be much help. On the other hand, the spot you picked on Chinook Pass is one of the most easily accessed photo wonderlands in the whole Mt. Rainier area (north of Naches Peak about where the Pacific Crest Trail crosses the highway). Those park-like areas with the little tarns are carpets of wildflowers when in season. (Confession: I haven't made that trip for quite a few years.) There is a medium short hike around Naches Peak which is also the tops, even better as an easy overnight camping trip. So, next June? I'm fairly sure that the light "leak" problem with your Bronica is a failure of the light seal along one edge of the back, probably along the hinge. If so, It's a fairly easy repair to do yourself, the hardest part being to find the right thickness of foam for the new seal. If you plunge into DIY color developing and have questions, I've been doing that for 35 years; feel free to inquire. ([e-mail])

Just went up to Sunrise and caught the wildflowers in full bloom, it was great. Hoping the Bronica issue was just a loosely wound roll (i think i remember i had some trouble loading it). Cheers!

I think I still have most of a roll of Ektar 100 rotting in my Pentax 67 from last Fall. And I do mean that you email or call if you want some help entering into color processing. I was pretty intimidated by developing and scanning at first but started about two years ago and have been hooked ever since! There is initial cost to get into the whole process but once you have everything it’s very rewarding. And scanning yourself or getting drum scans made might be what your looking for to get that resolution.

I love that first shot of the trees! You don't always need detail in the shadows. The light highlighting the ridges of the trees looks great!! I promise! Also Black & White looks good too but sometimes black and white is the better option with heavy shadow emphasis. I realize I'm commenting on a two year old video so I'm sure you've learned a ton by now but this pic looks great to me! I'm a sucker for edge lighting detail.

All the equipment needed to develop is relatively low cost, $200 or so will get you all you need. A good scanner is a little more expensive, but a reasonably good one is a few hundred dollars as well. Basically, everything you need is well below $1k. if you have patience it can all be found on craigslist at further savings. It also is very rewarding and relaxing experience.

That was exactly the message I needed to hear right now! I got a TLR a couple of months ago as my first Medium Format camera - the first B&W roll I shot through it was fine. Then I waited a while before I shot two rolls of FujiPro 400h and both of them were 90% f***ed up - haven't touched the camera since... It's time I pick it back up and figure it out!

Once you get all of the materials and everything can you please make a tutorial of developing and processing your own film! I think its a great skill to have and definitely makes photography as a while more intimate and magical. Keep up the great work!

biiiig time recommend doing it yourself. i just started doing it all right at the beginning of quarantine and I feel like I've learned a ridiculous amount about color balancing and I get way more creative control of my workflow with those big tif files. developing itself is super fun and rewarding too. ill definitely say though that scanning color film especially is not an easy learning curve at all and just about every other day i'm about ready to go back to getting lab scans out of frustration/time efficiency hahah

haha yup! I tried scanning my color negs from a big europe trip last year because I had about 36 rolls that i didnt want to pay for at a lab, so i went to my schools media room where they had an epson v750. Took me about 30 min to scan/correct two negatives lol. couldnt get the colors looking the way i wanted either. scanning black & white is much easier (obviously). however, i think im about ready to take on the challenge again.

Amazing video man! I started film phography around May this year. It has been amazing. I started developing my own film 3 weeks after( it's really not that hard or complicated) and scanning it on my own. I scan with a camera, I get super sharp photos and around 50 megapixel out of my 6x7 negatives:)

@@BraeHunziker Yea! For sure! You are gonna f* up so negatives at first but you will get the hang of it after 3 rolls. I saved up alot. Bought a 5 litre C41 chem for 140 dollars, and I still have it. Developed around 20 rolls or more already:) And scanning cost nothing since I do it myself. And the beauty is! You can see your photos the same day as you shoot them:) Good luck man and keep the videos coming. Really enjoying it!

I'm appalled at how low resolution professional scans are for 120 film. I don't even bother and just scan myself. If you can get super flat contrast out of the scan, a ton of shadow and highlight detail is recoverable. Also, great video. Nice vibes going on.

It’s completely ridiculous. If you’re viewing on a phone I suppose it doesn’t matter too much, but as soon as I start editing on my computer and cropping in I just get disappointed. Getting 72ppi scans on 120 negatives doesn’t do it any justice. Plus I don’t enjoy getting color baked JPEG files when I could be getting TIFFs... Thanks for the comment!

thank you! and tough choice, lab is nice because of the time-saving aspect and if you go to a decent one they'll deliver great color balance which is huge. I feel like developing yourself is a good thing to learn, however.

Brae Hunziker the lab I have my eyes on is Goodman Film Lab in Irvine, CA, they have a premium scans option which includes what they call a "Custom Color Profile", they describe it quite well on their site, definitely considering them for my next batch of rolls

Just checked them out, that color profile look they do sounds interesting. I still feel like I’m trying to hone in on “my look” lol. Maybe I’ll mail a couple rolls to them and see what they come up with! Or if you get scans done by them let me know how you like them!

You should try some other film stocks for midday; I know that black and white is very nice to shoot at midday! We all have some good and bad photos! That’s 100% fine! There is - I believe - A quote by a famous photographer which goes like “most of a photos you take will be bad” or there’s this other quote which is “the first 10,000 photos you take will be bad”. Either way, don’t be harsh on yourself for it!

4:35 - I noticed you are loading your film in the middle of the sun in the beginning, light will get to your film, turn around and load the camera in your shadow - little tip :)

What timing. I was up on a 4 mile hike at Chinook Pass on Sunday. Same time of day so left the 67 for a few DSLR shots. Now I want to go back for the golden hour and during the week as the amount of people was insane. The Enumclaw shots were excellent. Have you been over to the Orting valley for a shot yet?
