Simon, Thank you for your insights. I enjoyed, and was fascinated to see how you work through your compositions, and how you go about doing your location scouting. You have provided me with the idea of doing my own location scouting. What impressed me the most is the fact that your are willing to show and talk about those time's when thing's don't go as planed. But you also demonstrated that if you continue to work at it , you may not get what you originally thought, but you can still come close to the original idea.

Superb. Every bit as educational and enjoyable as your “successes”. Thank you for your generosity in sharing these insights into your planning and efforts to get the shot you envisaged. That you did not get it makes this story, somewhat ironically, all the more valuable. As is the case with many of the other ‘landscape photography’ videos that I enjoy on KZbin, it is evident that you enjoy ‘being there’ whatever the result, and this message is increasingly, for me, the primary one. Thank you for persevering with this - it *is* very much worthy of the effort.

Hi Simon, I am so pleased that you have shown the frustrations that you face as a landscape photographer. In a way the vlog is a success as you have tried to show just what you are up against and sometime you just have to enjoy the environment and absorb the moment. The photo composition turned out fine and if it was me, I would be pleased with the result. Working with a flat landscape can be quite difficult, but you have mastered this one. Your persistence will pay off when all will align, and it will have been worth it for the wait. Look forward to future vlogs and working my way back through your others. One thing I also like about your vlogs is your knowledge of the native flora/fauna. That is a special talent which just makes the vlogs more enjoyable. Cheers.

Many thanks for such a lovely considered comment. Hopefully more will agree with you and the channel can grow. I think if you have a good understanding of the things you photograph, you can take better advantage of the subjects themselves when you show them in your images.
@eugecoscarelli97456 жыл бұрын
Hi Simon, totally agree. To be a nature photographer you have to understand animal behaviour and especially the subject which interest you. You also have to be a botanist and best of all combine both with local knowledge, which gives you the advantage and this is what you share with us. And quite frankly, this is what I enjoy the most. You have inspired me to at least think about starting my own channel and doing something similar to you in Australia. I hope to see more videos and look forward to seeing you get more subscribers, I for one am a committed subscriber. I hope that when I do get going on my channel, you could look in on me and offer some advice, which would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

Fascinating insight into how you work a location over months and even years in order to get the shot. As I start to take my photography more seriously I am building a list of locations that I know well and that I can head to when conditions look good. It's great to share stories when things don't work out - that is after all the reality of what we do.

@SimonBoothPhotography6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ewan, I have just spent some time browsing your online portfolio and there is plenty there to be inspired by. I was particularly interested to see your move to the Pentax 645. I would love a larger mega-pixel count camera and have looked at alternative systems but hadn't really considered the Pentax. Something like that would suit me as I love the big body of the 1DX. My niggle is that I like to shoot nature as well!
@ewandunsmuir27666 жыл бұрын
yeah, they are best suited for Landscape and studio work, not fast moving stuff. The 645 Z body is no more expensive that the 1DX2 but for a completely different purpose. Ive been shooting the Z for a year and half and am being pursued by Fuji for Ambassador ship with the GFX50, which would be cool. Got my eye on the Hasselblad X1D though = p

Thanks Colin. Successful are fairly frequent for me, but only because I adapt what I shoot depending on conditions and season. If I just shot landscapes, my hit rate would be far lower!

Excellent video Simon (as I find all of yours are). Nice unhurried pace to it, and you captured the atmosphere of the open and empty space beautifully. I especially enjoy hearing the thoughts that you have prior to going off to shoot, and how you adapt as you go. You say that good landscape photography is difficult, but you manage to convey the feeling that anything is possible given the right planning and effort - and a bit of luck weather wise - which keeps me motivated to do more, and get better. Thanks.

Thanks Mark. I suppose it's a result of just telling the story as it unfolds and building the film around a true timeline. I am persistant and very focused with my photography and some would say obsessed, but hey, who cares :-) So glad you enjoyed and took something away for yourself!

Sometimes it's like that. Thing is, it's NOT a failure. The only failure is not going at all. I shoot a lot of sunrise and sunset shots and living at the shore we often have fog and clouds and it's hard to wait around. Usually I have to say I've been lucky and I get the sun filtering thru a hole in the clouds and often when it slips below the horizon and that light shots back thru the clouds it's breathtaking. But getting up at 3 am and heading out...there's no way in the world I'm heading back with nothing. I'll find feeding egrets or maybe swans or there will be something or interest even if it's just for myself. Those are the surprises. Not really what you hoped and planned but it all worked out in the end. Just being there and having that experience is the main jackpot. Great video and always.

Thanks for this video Simon. I've had my eye on that area for ages as I only live up the road myself and having seen the channels up close and on Google Earth I've been meaning to get there when I can. I'll definitely be getting there at some point when I can now. It's an awkward area to try to shoot as there's almost nothing there but I'm determined to find something at some point. PS. Those bloody shooters are a nuisance (although I went there myself once many years ago)!

All too familiar Simon. A very well put together film, sadly lacking in that all important slice of luck. I’ve been using ‘sky fire’ which hits the mark sometimes! You have been missed lately :)
@SimonBoothPhotography6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ian. I will look at sky fire but Yr is pretty good to be honest. The only place where these fall down is not being able to predict the weather conditions where the sun is rising through. It might be great overhead but to the east it could be awful. Meteoearth is good for that but it's a shame you can't filter cloud layers.

Really interesting video Simon, thank you. Sadly the protections you mention are meaningless. If an American billionaire decides he’d like to build a golf course then gullible local politicians can do what they want. Despite anecdotal evidence that the promises of new jobs and cheap housing, are empty, Councillors have ignored the triple protection of Coul Links in Sutherland (SSSI, SPA and Ramsar) and despite numerous objections have approved plans for a golf course that will destroy an area of outstanding natural beauty. Money talks! All the best.
@SimonBoothPhotography6 жыл бұрын
Hi Trevor, I agree that there may be situations were this could arise if enough money is thrown and I say this to people a lot in my job. For nationally protected sites and those involving important bird areas, an Appropriate Assessment and a Habitat Regulations Assessment are both needed and are a very rigorous process, which is backed by the National Planning Policy Framework and it's recent amendment. There is a section in there about this that you should read. Like everything though, there's always a caveat and if it can be demonstrated that there is a greater need for people and thus, the local economy, then development can be pushed through. They would still have to demonstrate that the mitigation hierarchy is being followed though.
@trevorhughes73996 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your reply Simon, I’m not sure if that is applicable in Scotland, however the Scottish Government are considering calling in the decision, so there is still a chance that these beautiful dunes can be saved. Our Councillors should talk to counterparts in Aberdeen, a similar application was approved years ago for a certain Mr Trump and in the 10 years or so since the promised investment has not been forthcoming. Will we never learn? The trouble is that these people can lie so convincingly and know just the right buttons to push to get their way. It helps that they employ staff who are amoral!
