The dislikes on this video shows how even such an innocent video on our language can bring in so much hate. Our oppressors do not have a problem with particular groups, they have a problem with the Kurdish existence. Our oppressors have stolen everything from us, hence why anything Kurdish threatens their whole existence. Keep hating, you only make us stronger. Bijî Kurdistan, Bijî Kurd. Thank you for your beautiful video on our language.

+Mladen Milic. Which South Slavic language are you referring to? I am trying to learn Serbian and I can´t even say "Hi, may name is..." and I have already found similarities between Serbian and Kurdish. And no, I don´t refer to words from Turkish or Arabiac that could have stayed in Serbian, I mean simple, ancient words like "woman", "legs" or similar. It´s actually freaking me out a bit :) I would never have thought it could be that way.

The word "human" in Kurdish is very interesting. In Kurmanji one says for the word "human" Mirov / Meriv which means mortal in real, from the word Mir / Mer for death. In Sorani, Piyawekan is said to mean "man" which means "risen". Mortal and Risen. Very interesting, also from a philosophical point of view.

I made friends with a bunch of Kurds in middle school and high school, when I played soccer. By far some of the greatest people I have ever known; I suppose it is true that hardship builds character. 2 Iraq Kurds, 2 Turkish Kurds, and 1 Iranian Kurd. I recall they were able to speak in Kurdish with one another, though I don't know to what degree, and not one of them spoke any fewer than 3 languages. One of them, named Ako, was fluent in Kurdish, Turkish, English, Arabic, and German. Last I knew, he was living in Italy, so I presume he had no trouble adding Italian to his impressive resume.

Chauvinists like Turkish or Spanish/Hispanic or French or British/English or Russian or Moroccan nationalists/patriots believe that only those who are like them, speak like them, feel like them and have their nation-state culture, language and name (and sometimes even religion) as their own have the right to exist within the borders of their nation-states, other peoples/ethnicities/nationalities that don't fit to their plebeian jacobin-racist imperialist mentality and worldview, whether authoctonous or foreign, have no right to be there within "their" borders according to them. That's the poison of modern nationalism/patriotism and thus racism that originated in England, Germany and France and spread all over the world like the clap throughout the last centuries and has caused countless ethnocides, genocides, cultural repressions and linguicides.

My dialect is Kurmanji, and it took time to learn some Sorani by talking to Sorani speaking friends and watching Sorani programs despite that it is hard to grab what they say at first instance. Once you learn about grammar rules and break down sentences it becomes a bit easier. I still consider both dialects Kurdish in addition to other dialects, because the Kurdish language is rich with vocabulary and every dialect is using specific ones in addition to some grammar changes. Loved the topic, thank you for shedding light on Kudish language❤

Thanks Paul! Very interesting! I'm a native Persian speaker and the way that the sentence is composed in "Sorani" Kurdish language, which goes "I see the men" (min piawaken debinm) , is understandable for all Persian speakers. It might not "immediately" make sense, but with a bit of deconstruction, it's certainly intelligible. When I hear Kurdish spoken by Iranian Kurds, I don't understand the language entirely, but I certainly can pick up enough words to understand the topic and key points, in most cases.

I always notice Indo-European connections. Jin in Kurdish appears to be a cognate of жінка (zhinka) in Ukrainian. Also, Kurdish the verb dîtin "to see" is similar to Ukrainian (watch) дивитися (dyvytysja). Object pronoun "Min" in Kurdish resembles мене (mene) in Ukrainian. Also, the negative particle "ne" is virtually the same in Kurdish and Ukrainian. I noticed numerous other examples of similarity as well. Amazing how Indo-European languages have this kind of similarity, but you have to look deeply to notice it.

I'm a Kurmanji speaker and I studied Kurdish Literature in University, after 20 years of Turkish education. I will try to answer your questions due to my experience: 1- How easy to communicate with speakers of other dialects: It really depends. As you may know, Kurmanji has different accents as well. I can communicate without no problem a Kurmanj from Urmiye(Iran), Qamishlo(Rojava), Diyarbakir(Turkey) and Shingal(Kurdistan Regional Government), we have almost the same accent. But I face with some diffuclties when I speak a Kurmanj from Cizre(Turkey) or Hakkari(Turkey) even if they are geographically closer. About communication with a Soran (Sorani speaker) as a Kurmanj, it's a bit hard at the beginning as they speak very fast. But less than a month work, can make a Kurmanj to be able to understand from them easily. On the other hand when I read today's literature of Sorani, I understand less than half. But when I read modern literature of 100 years ago, I understand more than 70-80 percent. It's beucase of the modernism process of Sorani between 1930-1980s as they removed many non-kurdish words from their language and brought kurdish descent words instead. Kurmanji and sorani become distant from each other. About understanding zazaki: A regular kurmanj who has no education doesn't understand zazaki that much. But as I've seen that zazakî and kurmanji grammar is closer than kurmanji and sorani. The difference is more phonetical, which is not exist between Kurmanji and Sorani. Another thing: Every Zaza, who speaks well Zazaki, understands well from Kurmanji. It may have sociological reasons. 2- Do you consider all dialects of single language: It depends on that we speak which perspective. As I know, It's "Kurdish Languages" in linguistic perspective. From the sociological perspective, we can say that it's one language. For example: When we speak Kurmanji, we say "I'm Kurd / I speak Kurdish", we say for Sorans "They speak Sorani". But when a Soran speak in his own dialect, he might say "I'm Kurd / I speak Kurdish", and he might say for us "They speak Bahdini/Kurmanji". 3- Challenges: The study materials getting better everyday, but still not enough. Ergativity and gender are complex at the beginning. Pronunciation is hard, because there are a lot of voices. We learn many new words that you cannot hear them on streets but can read in books. 4- General experience: I cannot more agree with claim that says "Biggest challenge of Kurdish is not ergativity, but variety of language." Another problem is Kurmanji speaker studies in other languages and uses Kurmanji only at home or in streets. By the time, "the other language" starts to dominate their language mechanism, especially new generation of technology. It becomes harder the make art or literature with it... Thanks for the video. Sincerely...

I am kurd from Rojava , and I can speak the three Kurdish Dialects : Kurmanjî , Badînî and Soranî. Concerning your question, the Kurdish language is one and divides into three basic branches and some minor ones like zazakî and goranî. I have been in Başûr (Iraqi Kurdistan ) for five years and I found a lot of mutual words.the difficulty is in the way they combine this words , the composition of the sentence. Another significant difference that you didn’t mention in your video is the use of letter V. In kurmanjî it is excessively used while in Soranî they use (W or Y ) instead of it. For example : Onion , pîvaz , piyaz Shepard, şivan, şiwan Water , av , aw Guest , mêvan , mêwan ===== Finally, I would like to thank you for this great video.

Hello from Ukraine to all Kurds! My teacher of English at school was Kurd. I learned so much from him! I pray for all of you to preserve your beautiful language and to stay united! The story about Kurdish dialects sounds so similar to Ukrainian language. It was strongly divided into several dialects, because our teritory was divided between several countries. Now when Ukraine is independant (since 1991) different dialects inside the country exist as parts of one language. But outside, in the lands where Ukrainians live near the borders of Ukraine, Ukrainian dialects tend to be named `Ruthenian language` in the West and Russian dialect `Balachka` in the East, which is not true. I hope you will have your own country one day! (Please do not ban me for that wish! It`s not `politics`. For every nation to have its own country is the only way to preserve its language)
@dhs9198

Capitan Barbosa I din`t know. Lots or Ukrainians prefer to immigrate to other countries instead of participating in geopolitical changes)). As for Crimea tatars and Ukrainians. Lot`s of Ukrainians assimilated with Crimea Tatars. And vise versa. The difference is religion and education. Like I have some Crimea Tatar blood because my grand great dad married to a Tatar girl. Lot`s of Crimea Tatars were merried to Ukrainian girls. Personally I don`t mind to give `Tatar and Nogay lands back to them` but its up to Russian Federation. RF doesn`t give any independance to anybody. It kills the ethnic groups, nations and languages.

My family's origin is Turkish but been mixing with local Kurds from Canbeg tribe for almost 150 years which makes us almost no different than local Kurds. My grandfathers and father grew up bilingual. But the point is that they don't understand dialects of other tribes and other cities fluently but get the meaning of their sentences, songs etc. When I show them cultural stuff from the Canbeg tribes from other cities, they understand these people more than others. But for Sorani and Gorani, they think it's almost completly different. As for the new generation, they're more open in terms of understanding the structure of other dialects of Kurdish in other cities and regions. Because they're seeing vocabulary from the materials on the internet and the social media. Just like other family groups, it makes it easier to see other dialects of a language group on a common alphabet system. I also experienced it from Turkic languages. When they put their sentences into Latin alphabet, it's easier for a Turkish speaker to understand more of Turkmen, Kazakh,Kyrgyz,Uyghur etc languages. Because you can't notice it by speaking and miss to hearing many words

I don't know why people call it the Arabic alphabet, pre-Islamic Iranian writings look strikingly similar to what is today known as Arabic Alphabet. Its just like the Arabic numerals, they existed in India long before the Arabs introduced it to Europe. But today everyone knows them as Arabic, falsely I should add.

***** North India was for a long time called Persian India. So yea Indians are very closely related to Persians. However when the Arabs invaded Iran, they took a lot of Iranian heritage as their own. Architecture, language and science..etc So the so called Arabic alphabet and Arabic numerals are actually Iranian alphabet and Indian numerals.

Thank you for this video from Kurdistan region of Iraq. I am a native speaker of Kurdish language and it is very easy for me to understand other dialects of Kurdish Language. I am a native speaker of Kurmanji dialect, I can speak Sorani as well and I understand some of Zazaki. As I have observed during the last years many Kurdish tv channels have been opened and this helped Kurds a lot to understand each other from different dialects of different parts of Kurdistan...

@Ευαγγελος Αγγελος there will be similarities because they are from the same language family. But, if you focus well you will realize that Kurmanji and Sorani are 80% percent similar. Most of my Sorani friends who have learnt Kurmanci say "Before we had thought they are very different but now we know they are very similar".

I’m Kurdish from Eastern Kurdistan (Iranian Kurdistan which we call it in Kurdish (Rojhilat) my dialogue is Sorani ,but due to free media of Kurdistan region in Iraq or iraqi Kurdistan I can understand,speak and write and this isn’t like learning a new language for kurds since we are all related it’s actually easy to switch one to another dialogue in Kurdish.
