I love this. K.D comes across as a fantastic person. She just sits there, no ego, no trying to match wits, no taking offence, totally getting the humour and understanding the context of the situation. What you have is a person utterly at ease and thoroughly enjoying themselves. It's really joyous to watch.

k.d. lang is so sweet and I really love her smile and laugh. I'm also glad she's setting and holding the example that women can "dress like men" without in fact being men, which a lot of young people coming up are not being told/shown. She takes Dame Edna's ribbing and roasting like a champ, too.

I’m a trans guy, and have always looked up to her. I often wonder how she feels about gender, as she never complains at being called she, even though everything about her says she would have been perfectly happy being born a guy. But she’s never said, so I suppose we can’t presume either way. It’s very difficult transitioning, there’s sexual function issues, and physical changes. K.D’s voice is the most beautiful one on planet Earth, and a tremendous gift. I’ve been on the T for two months and my voice is changing, and whilst that to me is a gift, and might enable me to join a singing group without humiliation, for K.D. having anything risk her voice is maybe unthinkable.
@freedombug11
@freedombug11 Жыл бұрын
@@andrewhaywood3853 I think it's certainly true that she wouldn't want to risk her voice. I don't know much about her, but there have been "butch" lesbians since forever and it's just fundamentally not the same thing as needing to be a guy. It's almost like people are forgetting that butch lesbians are a thing. Of course we don't know her private thoughts on it, but I think it's always better to just take people exactly as they seem to be unless they tell you otherwise. It's okay to be a butch lesbian that gets mistaken for a man. Being a trans guy is fine too, but since many more people are gay than truly trans, there are more butch lesbians in the world than there are trans guys. In some ways society seems to be suddenly losing its tolerance for homosexuality and for cross-dressing unless it is also tied up with gender identity. Transitioning with hormones (as you know) is pretty hard on the body and risky health-wise and I don't want society to confuse young gay and/or gender non-conforming kids into thinking that all of them are trans (and that if trans, that necessarily means they need medicalization). I hope none of that came across the wrong way.

"When did you first realise you were Canadian?" I swear that's exactly what made Dame Edna, or Barry Humphries, so successful in the satirical world it's because she says and leads you down conversation and out of no where, quips and one liners like that just appear out of nowhere. You can never tell what her intentions are or what she's going to say that it reminds me of the great Gene Wilder and his portrayal as Willy Wonka. That memorable scene of Willy Wonka introducing himself at the gates of the factory, with Gene slowly walking with a stick, then the stick gets stuck on the ground and he rolls over only to jump up again. He mentioned that he wanted to do that scene deliberately that way because he wanted everyone, the viewers, to know that that's his character, an unpredictable tornado from there on out. Genius.

Kd has earned our respect and admiration. Hereshe shows her humble personality and truth. Her comedic timing with Edna is priceless, and she knows how to laugh at herself. I am so proud of her. If you get the chance watch her performance of Halleluia at the Vancouver winter Olympics ceremony. He version is absolutely the best, better than Leonard’s.

Only Dame Edna could ask those questions and get a laugh at the same time. Brilliant. Barry and his two alter egos maybe gone but he will definately, never be forgotten.

If anyone is interested: Barry wrote two very good books. One was called Women in the Background, the other was a memoir of growing up in Melbourne. The title I've forgotten, but he really could write. He was a very, very talented man and will be missed.

@eroselan - You really sum up kd's attributes to a "T." I saw her for the first time at the World's Fair '86) in Vancouver and I can tell you that since then, she has evolved her raw, innate talent into a well honed musical instrument that IMO puts her into a class all of her very own. Were that enough, she has the most melodious speaking voice, sports a great sense of humour, and is just an overall sweetheart.

What class acts both! Even Evana there doing her best Patsy Stone drag! I wish we had Dame Edna around these days. She was a great leveler. Such cleverly kind way of eliciting responses that would be difficult, awkward and embarrassing if asked by say Baba Wawa or some other shmuck. This was both comic and incredibly moving. Evana seemed to recoil when K.D. Sat down and somehow midway through the interview she was patting KD on the back and was into the thing wholeheartedly. It wasn’t that long ago but this kindness and clever empathy is a distant memory in todays world.
