Are you done with Assimil NFWE? I loved that course so much... and once I got my French to a solid B1 reading level, I could use the other Assimil books in French, yay! :D I totally believe that you can learn French and you will be able to converse in it soon, with your language-learning background. I hope your French studies are going well. :)
