@@patrickbateman7444 1500 m elevation gain is pretty low tbh, even for a sprint stage. Maybe in week 3 it would've been a breakaway stage. They aren't sprinters?

I think they made the right call, if he waits for Jonas and Yates he lets the peloton get closer too and it may give other GC teams an incentive to chase where as now only the sprinter teams were pulling. I don't think the possibility of gaining a couple of seconds on Pogacar was worth the risk.
@dylanperkins5212
@dylanperkins5212 2 жыл бұрын
Maybe, but I just can't help think who was left to chase anyway. Initially Pog was completely isolated, Ineos wont chase because of Yates, Jumbo will block the road so which teams are/were left that had strong enough squads to chase 3 strong and motivated riders all gaining either time or a stage...

After what we have seen from Pogačar over the last two years, if I were Jumbo, I would try to take every chance to put him under pressure I can get. And it is pretty obvious, that his team is pretty weak on this terrain and he was a bit out of position. But Jumbo has too many side projects and doesn't focus on the task ahead.
@donadams5094
@donadams5094 2 жыл бұрын
@@beckobert Green is not a "side" project, nor is Wout winning stages. He is one of the best riders in the world and at his peak. He serves the team brilliantly in many ways, both on the road (think Paris-Nice stage 8, in which he practically carried Primoz to the finish) and with the sponsors (think they like day after of 24/7 Wout coverage at the biggest race in the world?). And even with Wout and Laporte on the Green team, TJV still has the deepest climbing team in the field. If one of their GC guys doesn't win Yellow, it won't because they lacked support. It would almost certainly just mean that Pog was too good again.

This is a great long term play. It’s a 21 stage race. This gave WVA a larger gap in the yellow as well as the green, plus the stage win. It also allowed TJV to sit on for a free ride when everyone is killing themselves to pull back WVA. In stages to come, TJV will now have those matches to spend to further their team and their GC contenders. 3 of the top 7 ain’t bad.

Not a single GC team burned themselves, TJV used their team way more than other GC focused teams (only Ineos is active too). Wout isnt threat in GC so GC focused teams didnt chase.... Its good for Wouts green jersey but not for their GC ambitions. Lets see if TJV is strong enough to handle it and Wout didnt burn himself for his domestique role to come. I hope TJV are calculating it well to attack Pogy.

WvA made a judgement call coming off that climb. He knew how fresh he was and how fresh his teammates were. He knew he had the legs to go for it, as well as teammates behind who could possibly slow the train. The peloton failed. If they’d stopped thinking about their individual teams and worked together as a solid group, they’d have brought WvA back easily. He was pulling away for half of the flat because the peloton couldn’t get their shit together. It was the perfect storm and WvA profited. The peloton should have seen this move coming. You don’t get to be a Red Bull rider because you’re average.

Wout should NOT have waited for Jonas. There would have been much more of an impetus to chase if there had been a GC player up front pre-cobbles, particularly since a lot of Ineos and UAE were in the second group. If they’d committed to the chase from the off by adding to the sprint trains, given they still got within 8 seconds even with Alpecin being totally unaware Van Aert was still out there, they’d have almost certainly mopped him up and the stage win and top points would have been out of the question. Van Aert was flying on a move that would have won him a Monument at that point - let him do his thang. The team will thank him for it later. First non-mountain, non-TT stage won by the race leader of the Tour de France since Fabian Cancellara ambushed the peloton in 2007 - Van Aert is the Cancellara of our generation, and probably even more versatile.

Disagree. Why would Jonas follow Wouts attack up the hill and waste any energy at all? Jonas and Primoz should just sit on Tadej wheel until the mountains then. I believe if WVA had waited for Vingegaard, the GC would have pushed for catching them. I think it was a deliberate Jumbo-Visma move.

Good decision making by WvA: had he waited for Jonas, GC teams would all have chased pedal to the medal. Even if they didn't catch them, they would have carried Yates with them, who would not have helped one bit obviously, and then he would have jumped them on the line, with his more than decent sprinting abilities

Right move. They gain 25-30 secs on peloton but massively increase chance of a stage win with out or Jonas. Time gain is nothing in the overall GC for Jonas

Probably the right call in the situation. Would have loved to have seen what could've happened if Roglic and Thomas were slightly further forward and didn't have spend energy going round dropped riders. There might have been potential for a 5/6/7 man Ineos/Jumbo TTT to put a bit of time into Pogacar?

Hey LR I find it weird nobody is really talking about the PolkaDot is because non of the teams are interested in it. It almost seems if nobody else is fighting for it, the proudness of acquiring isn’t there.

@@outtatrex I get what you mean, but is it really an achievement when nobody else competing for it? For example last week my a local rider join a RR he got podium but there was only 2 riders in the field. He was so happy he got podium, to be fair he could’ve been out there all day he would had still got podium since theres 3 spots in podium and 2 riders only.

Right decision by Wout, needed to get that stage win after coming so close on the last 3 and no guarantee they take time if he waits for Jonas and Yates. Also hopefully means he'll be put in prison tomorrow to help froglic take time on the cobbles 🐸

The shot at 2:45 The 6 Jumbo Riders in position, It was obvious at this point what was going to happen and non of the commentators called it. And then here at 3:02 INEOS move to the front on the decent, to stop the Jumbo train as they expect what will happen to keep riders within the front of the race to disrupt the Jumbo plan, I think it was good race craft from INEOS to break it up when they don't have a rider to compete for the stage, non of the commentators mentioned this...

Jumbo is pretty much always in that position in the final 30-40kms of a stage. So them sitting there certainly was not a sign they would do it, but they do were in the right position to do it :)

Yeah of course, to protect their GC. But the profile of the stage and maybe not wanting another bunch sprint made their decision from the start of the day I think.

Hours later and people still have not come to a consensus about whether WvA should have waited for Vingegaard and Wout had to make a SPLIT-SECOND DECISION! I think he made the right call. The chase was really disorganized early on, some riders didn't even know he was up there in front. If Yates and Vingegaard would have been with him, all hell would have broken loose and the other teams would have immediately chased like crazy and caught them pretty quickly, I'd argue.

according to strava, Kevin Geniets avaraged 660 watts and did 1:46 over the climb. Wout weighs a bit more and did it in 1:37 so I'd say 700+watts easily :)

It was not WVA’s fault, but the confusion points to poor planning by Jumbo. WVA should never be in doubt of what to do in a situation like that. Every second counts and highest priority is to wait for the captain to give him an advantage in the time trial and mountains.

This was the best tactic for Wout, not to wait. Vingo was covering Yates had he gone ahead all the GC teams would have pulled to close the gap and he would not have won. One could argue they might have pulled faster with 3 riders. Hard to say

Maybe it would've turned out better if WvA had waited, but I think this is a case where you can do no wrong as it's impossible to predict. It's best to just go with what you feel in the moment rather than hesitate.

So far it sure looks like Jumbo's main goal is the green jersey with yellow being just a little side project. From that point of view they definitely made the right choice. If they actually care for yellow, they missed an opportunity to put UAE and Pogačar under pressure.
