Its true about vang vieng - I went in 2012 and all the bars on the river were shut down, many being demolished. They had a big crackdown shortly before I got there. I think in recent years it came back a bit but they definitely were trying to shift from western backpackers to asian travellers. Especially Korean. The recent mass deaths of backpackers from the poisoned alcohol in the last couples of weeks might lead to another crackdown on small bars and the 'backpacker vibe' - they want Chinese group tours now tbh
