You're correct to a point. Yes as parents we need to be vigilant and parent our children, BUT social media companies are granted unprecedented latitude without hardly any oversight, if any at all. This incentivises them to NOT have to worry about being sued or held accountable. They can essentially do anything they want. That is the point of this hearing. Yes parents have a responsibility, but that doesn't change the fact that these companies need to have guard rails and some of their legislative protections removed so they can be held accountable.

I have to say that social media needs to be regulated, but I also have to say parents are the largest problem, I did not allow my kids to have a cell phone until they went to college, no drama, no influence, no brainwashing, I also did not allow my kids to have a computer in their rooms, or a tv not a chance, it was downstairs in the living room where we could all see what they were doing, schools are a large problem with this one. Social media can indeed be very toxic and cause many insecurities and false narratives and bias. Of course, these developers should ensure that these products create a positive environment NOT just for children but for everyone. They make A LOT of money from users, they should do everything in their power to ensure the influence of these products on users is positive and safe.

Grilling these CEO’s aren’t going to change anything significant. The hell could they care for what these parents’ kids are doing on their platform?!? If anything, these teens went into the platform, joined at their own accord and whatever that is being shown to them on the internet, it’s up to them to either ignore or entertain. Twelve year-olds are smart these days right? The hell does Mr Chew care about that teen who stood in front of the train?! It starts in the home and what they see online but holding these CEO’s accountable is crazy.
