After watching your video, today I went out and I bought the same exact portable keyboard you used to harvest the USB converter and I did exactly the same as you did. Sadly, following your path resulted in only a few key pressings translating on a few random keystrokes - and most keys will not even result in anything at all. I understood from your video that you also did not get it to work. But the title of the video says you solved the problem. Did you manage to solve it in another video? I was unable to find it in any of your other videos. I am afraid as it is it does NOT work nor does it solve any of the problems you mentioned you solved, unfortunately. Please correct me if I am wrong. I just want it to actually work. Thank you.

deception in the title of the video. where is the working keyboard? most likely nothing works, tk. keyboards are different, the lines from the keys are different, you need an appropriate controller. even in the video you can see that the number of conductors in the connector does not fit ... how can this work and how can this be a solution !?

Thank you for sparking the creative juices because I have a few of these cheap tablet keyboard cases lying around. However, you really need to change your video title because you didn't solve anything.

What I ended up doing is throwing away the laptop keyboard entirely. I had an older Dell Precision M6400 with a larger profile. I gutted it and put a Raspberry Pi in the battery compartment. For the display I bought an LCD control board for 20 bucks on eBay and connected that to the Pi with an HDMI cable. For the keyboard I cut away the area where the previous keyboard was and found a backlit USB model that fit perfectly in the hollowed space and plugged directly or into the Pi.. Then I used a USB extender to reach the previous USB port area and attached it there so I can still have a USB port available. For my mouse I used a wireless 2.4ghz model with a dongle plugged directly into the Pi. Looks and works great. I haven't solved the two power cable problem for the display control board and the Pi.

Also: surface soldering on flat terminals is easy- you just need the proper tools. Hot air + solder paste + circuit board vice = cake walk.

There's more too it. Keyboard are wired in a matrix of rows and columns (as in column 2 + row 4 would be the A key), but how they are wired differ from each keyboard. "A" key might just as well be column 2 + row 3.

1. I'd not go for an arduino - far too big cost. 2. Can you not pick a chip to manage or some EEPROM if chip won't work? 3. You can get ports online, solder it to a small PCB, and see what this chip requires to run via USB. Add a diode if you'd like for a security, or some other protection. Or to keep the cost low, even neglected ;).

Thanks for putting up this video. I was looking around for a laptop keyboard converter, but I found your video instead, which saved me a lot of hassle. I managed to find a tablet keyboard that took USB 2 compared to your Micro USB cable. Keep an eye out for my completed Orange Pi cardboard laptop in the near future.

Interesting subject. I just read on Tom's hardware about someone asking for a solution similar but wanting to have a laptop without literally no internal components. He wants just a screen and keyboard as one part that's connected to a regular pc.

why don't you just use a hot air station and remove the connector from the motherboard of the laptop that keyboard came out of and build your own interface? Or why not just buy the microcontroller hat from a component distributor? gutting another keyboard that could've just been used in place of the laptop keyboard seems a bit overkill.

I have one - you can buy it from me if you like. It is a german layout in QWERTZ-order. But I think you can easily change it to the english QWERTY-order by exchanging the z with the y key cap. I have not tried whether they easily come off or not .

I want to do this to have a keyboard thats a little sunken into the desk so its flush with the surface, I am working on a desk thats going to be anything but ordinary 😉. I am not about all the glowing lights and the whole gaming desk setup , its going to be more of a maker , hardware/hacking /tinkering kiosk. A kiosk in the way of form factor not the way the operating system behaves. That video of the Raspberry Pi desk from a while back with the pop up screen and the glowing LED's in the surface of the desk was my motivation , but I would never spend that type of money to make a desk like that. If I could do it with parts I can salvage is another story. I was thinking of having something a little more powerful driving the desk , I have a core quad duo and a compatible motherboard that is just sitting here. Its perfect for what I need , basically a terminal , web browser , text editor , and enough processing power to compile without having to wait hours like when using a SBC. I also found a tutorial on instructables on how to take an older computer with a serial port and turn the computer into one large micro controller. I can't begin to think of the benefits of having that much more storage and RAM. The computer I want to use is running a pentium2 with 128MB of RAM. The motherboard is covered with headers its an ASUS p2-99 oldschooldaw.com/asus/1999/MOTHERBOARD_ASUS_P2-99_1999.pdf . The sound , and video cards are also covered with headers. I have to be able to do something with this. Its never been used, it still has an untouched version of Windows 98 installed on it The desk is big enough to fit both motherboards. I have a linux distro thats only 8MB with support for 32bit machines , minimal.linux-bg.org/#download . This is an interesting website if anyone wants to take a look. The minimal iso is also good if your a person that doesn't like docker or lxc , you can make a bunch of type 1 VM's and barely have to allocate any ram . They say the bare minimum to run linux is 128MB , this might be the exception to the rule.

In general it looks similar to arduino keypad. So you can find out how key matrix is working, and use those buttons for arduino project or even konvert to USB signal. herei is the idea how to check matrix. kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4elhXiNfK-pgMU

I am "modernising" a toshiba t3100. I have not yet decided if i will go one of two routes. Use a mini ITX mobo and make quite a powerful PC that has to be plugged into a wall. Or Use a current spec laptop mobo and make it a battery powered device and just jam like 4kg of batteries into it so it gets 5 days of use. BUT, in both scenarios I would very much like to use the standard keyboard. It is a ribbon style I believe (waiting on the mail man) that goes to a specific plug on the board. How do you think I would best go about adapting this early style keyboard to a current gen usb input or current gen laptop input. I have all the other bases covered and this is the only thing that has me stumped. I thought about carefully mounting a different keyboard in position but it wouldn't be the same.
@briantaylor9701

That is a seriously awesome project! I think that fact almost demands that you use that keyboard type that's part of it's iconic look. It almost demands that you use the monochrome display and love how media looks while being played on it, LOL! Worst case, amongst the options available that keeps the T3100 homage aspect intact, would be to use a bluetooth capable motherboard to connect an external keyboard and leave the standard one in place, albeit unconnected. At least, then, you can enjoy using your "Model 002" T3100, while at the same time, seeing it's disconnected keyboard when using it will be motivation and inspiration to keep researching and posting questions on forum chat boards all across the internet until a solution can be found. I wish you all the luck in the world and hope it earns you a write up in any (all) of the various publications/websites that feature computer tech and the culture that surround it, so that I can see what that finished project looks like! It kind of makes me want to dig around and find my Tandy TRS-80, measure it up and see what I could do with it...

When you hook a (any) keyboard up to the flat ribbon socket on this controller and plug it in to a USB slot, it is only going to produce an output (text/numbers) to the computer on certain keys, and the output will not match what was intended. The only way to use this setup is to reverse engineer the controller AND the laptop key matrix. You'll have to find pin assignment pairs for both the controller and the keyboard. THEN find which pair of pins on the keyboard ribbon match which two pins on the controller. THEN find a viable way to connect the two. The author recommends using only half of the controller (pin socket and breakout pads). I think that's a good start, but you should also go ahead and break the bank and buy another controller to use so you can solder breakout pins to breakout pins.
