Screen replacement works, though what I show in the other video is how to basically give you "super resolution" on your existing monitor ... giving you up to 4x the stock resolution ... pretty nifty. With the human eye, it looks MUCH sharper in games! Also, costs you nothing!!

Great video man. I plan to do the same thing with my Asus G501J. Can you tell me a little bit about long term experience with liquid metal in your g702, pls? Is your heatsink still fine(corrosion or somehting like that happened?)? Stayed the lm where you applied it? Are temps still fine and are all cores around the same temp? (Heard about issues with uneven heatsink and lm) My G501 has only two screws(its the original design, no screws lost and no mounting points for 4) which are locking down the heatsink to the GPU die(but 4 screws on CPU side). Is that a problem? I know that are a lot of questions but you would help me a lot if you share some of your experience with me. I will donate of course if you give me your PayPal.

Thanks Tyler! No way I am going to f..k this up, too precious for me )) I have some experience disassembling stuff, but even though I'll be extra careful with this one. The only thing I didn't order yet is the electrical tape, thought I can buy it anytime in a local hardware shop when the rest arrives. The "nail polish" method would be handy to see for sure. Hoping to get everything by the end of the next week, ordered all on eBay, including the laptop. The laptop I got is brand new , with the Kaby Lake chip and GTX1070, the most budget version with 12GB of ram, mechanical HDD and 75hz display (I read it can be overclocked to 100hz). It takes a couple of weeks to arrive from US to Ireland, still much cheaper than anything similar I would get here. I am a bit worried about the quality of the display, heard there is a really nice 120hz IPS panel available in the higher end versions. Are you having the 75hz screen? If yes - are you happy enough with it?

Thanks for sharing the video. I am interested in this line of laptops but have reservations over the overheating. May just go for the acer helios or some other unit with larger heat sink. It's a shame they don't provide realistic cooling solutions for their products. I would pay a few extra bucks for the "conductonaut" version of this laptop from the factory.

I'm in Singapore, and it is really hard to get thermal pads here. I finally managed to get some thermal pads, but I could only get 4 sheets of 50mmx50mmx0.5mm thermal pads. I read somewhere that one can stack thermal pads to make 1mm thick ones. I'm wondering if I have enough area to work with? I can't tell how big the memory things are. Any thoughts regarding how big the memory things are? I think they are about square, how many mm do you think they were?

I have the GL702VMK and initially was seeing around 85C-90C on CPU/GPU under heavy gaming load. I undervolted the CPU and disabled Intel Turbo (I know a lot of folks don't wanna do this, personally I am still happy with the performance I get.) I use an Opolar LC06 on each vent also. (they do fit, you just gotta work at it) With most games on max settings I get low-mid 60's on CPU and no higher than 72C on GPU. Thanks for the video. I will probably repaste down the road but I think I may have been one of the lucky ones with a good factory paste. After warranty I will probably also dremel holes in the bottom of the case to let this sucker breath.

I believe most other components around the die will be nickel, though you will want to make sure there is no aluminum around where the excess went (if any). Overall though, sounds like you put just the right amount, and glad to hear it worked! Make sure you check out my other video that I just recently did, 5 months later, so you can get an idea of what you will be looking at and cleanup. I HIGHLY suggest a reapplication in 5 months, as it will just start building a bond INTERNALLY with the copper and will require a bit more galium than last time, though after the re-application, you will see even better temps! What temps are you getting when you run fans on max?

Hi Tyler, I watched your first video, I was just in doubt about some things. 1) In which components did you use the 0.5mm and 1mm artic tape? 2) Do you clean the entire white paste of the components before applying the tape? 3) Why did you remove the protective film from the GPU and apply electrical tape? And why did you only do this on the GPU? Thank you for your help!
@MrTsTips
@MrTsTips 6 жыл бұрын
Diego Benedini I used the 1mm for all the other components other than the two lowest center areas you see when I have my case open. I did clean the entire white paste (goop) off the components and motherboard, using solution and cotton buds. Make sure to get any stray cotton fibers as well! The protective film around the GPU was much looser and wasn’t tightly stuck to the motherboard around the die like the film around the CPU is ... I didn’t want the chance of gallium getting on my motherboard and other components, so I retroactively removed the film and layed down the high temp pro tape, though you can also use clear nail polish/lacquer. Let me know how it goes for ya!

If you are new to this dont use liquid metal ! I recommend you use CoolerMaster Mastergel Maker nano, it's low key one of my favorites rn for laptops because it has a high viscosity like IC-Diamond so it will last longer than other pastes and it also has high thermal conductivity of 11 W/m.k close to thermal grizzly kryonaut. I recommend Both Coolermaster Mastergel maker nano or Kryonaut for laptops that thermal throttle on stock paste. My alienware 15 r3 doesnt hit over 80 on the most heaviest games or when rendering. Only use liquid metal if you dont mind the risk because it can easily fry your 1500-2000+ euro laptop. P.s. If you want your pc to run even cooler try undervolting your cpu its very effective especially with skylakes they usually get -50mv higher undervolts compared to their kabylake counterpart.

Ali-W7 Ananza I hear ya. I just bought the new Area 51m and have been considering going above and beyond on different cooling techniques... I really want to try out this new metal liquid but you’re right... if I f*ck up... I’m screwed out of nearly $5000 lol... I suppose later on down the line once I do a few rounds of the paste I can try my hand with the metal. And just to reiterate, you’re saying this paste is better than pastes like the noctua NT-H2??
@aliananza1990
@aliananza1990 5 жыл бұрын
@@durtyred86 its thermal conductivity is (11w/m.k) i cant find the thermal conductivity of noctua nt-h2 but all i know is cooler master mastergel maker nano offers almost the same performance as kryonuat i used to have kryonaut on my alienware its 3x more expensive per gram. But i dont have to worry about it drying out for years if its exposed to air or anything as they use diamond particles like ic-diamond but its more than double thermally conductive and thats what makes it great for laptops its pretty well priced has very high thermal conductivity and thick which is rly good for laptops especially if you gonna move it or the heatsink doesnt fully sit flat on the die. If you do end up trying it I recommend you spread it on the die instead of use a rice grain or drop cuz its pretty thick and it might not spread covering the whole die properly. Good luck man the alienware area 51m looks unreal!

I did this on my GL702VMK and didnt get the results i was expecting.. I used Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut and Gelid Solutions GP Extreme Thermal pads (W/mK 12).. It did drop 5-10c in stress test on max fan speed which i alright but was kinda expecting miracles too happen like 20c.. I did cover the air leaks and i checked several times that i applied the LM correctly (i am familiar with LM). Next step is modding the bottem cover. I ordered a spare bottom piece on ebay as i dont want to cut in the orginal and then there might be a slight chance that ill keep my warranty.

Hi Mr T! I have a couple of questions to ask you. I ordered this laptop, I'm picking it up in 7 days from now, and I am ready to do the re-pasting as soon as I get my hands on it. I've found Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut 1g in my country, but I have questions about other accessories that you used: 1. About the thermal pads, they sell only ones with these dimensions: 200 x 20 x 1.0 mm / 200 x 20 x 0.5 mm, so I wanted to ask do you the accurate measurements of pads that you used after cutting? Can you recommend me how many packs of pads of each should I buy (ex: 2 of 200 x 20 x 0.5 mm, 1 of 200 x 20 x 1.0 mm) so it is enough? 2. We don't have any of ArctiClean products, what can replace it? Can I use 70%/90+% alcohol? Recommend me something, please. 3. I asked about the Super 33+ VET, nobody has a clue what is it. Is there any replacement? I live in Serbia, can you check our online stores and find me anything equal to the tape you used? Thank you in advance!

Petar Grahovac Hey there Petar - Thanks for checking out my vid. First off, order just 1 x 200 pad of each the .5 and the 1mm .. that will be plenty. Use as pure alcohol as you can as second step of cleaning, for second step, use a citrus oil cleaner (like goo gone). If you can't get the tape you need, use clear fingernail polish lacquer and paint on 3 layers (10 minute dry time between layers), and paint it around the gpu and cpu dies. Make sure to subscribe!

Lars Thelen hey there. You will be using the same 2 thicknesses of pads that I did in the video, the .5 and the 1.0, unless you have a component thermal compound. The heat dissipation on the components, while important, is not as important as it is on the CPU/GPU.

Hello there, first of all, thank you so much for this video! :) I did the repaste with exactly the same parts for cleaning and the conductonaut LM, but on the GL702VM. Everything went well and the laptop turned on, but the temperatures were quite bad, it just got hotter :/ So I thought: "Maybe I was a little bit too careful with portioning the LM", so i just added a little bit more after opening it all up again. Wow, so much easier to work on this laptop than my G751. To get at the heatsink I had to tear the whole thing down, screen removed, motherboard removed. I was getting thermal throttling on my g751 so repasted with Kryonaut. Now zero thermal throttling. Fans now have a good 300-400rpm left in them to bring temps down at my new max temp of 89c. Previously the cpu was gitting 95c and throttling up to 20% after just a few minutes of Aida64, CPU+FPU+GPU stress test. 95c is the throttle point for my cpu. Surprisingly before the repaste I saw up to 25% throttling in COD ww2. All sorted with the repaste. No undervolting done.

( for cpu only load tests, my temps max out at about 70c)

Tyler Torgrimson the fans go to max automatically when cpu temp hit 80c and gpu temps hit 75c. The cpu is already unvervolted (.110mv) and locked at 2.8ghz. gpu is set to 0.8250mv @1708mhz.

Tyler Torgrimson I ment -0.113mv hehe... I took the liberty of pulling the back cover off and manually hooking up a fan connected to a external power supply and set it to 12v. fan rpm (5000rpm) and cfm remained the same... I guess they fixed the fans not maxing out in a bios update which I did about 2 months back.

Tyler Torgrimson I figured my limiting factor was just my ambient since at uni in a room temp of 24ish c , my gpu tops out at 75c and cpu at 77c. I guess the cooler can't dissipate heat fast enough once the ambient climbs over 30c. but this is Sri Lanka so I don't have much of an option as such.

Got my cooler in today. went with this one: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B016PMVM7Q/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I was surprised for $21 that I got a great open air design with (4) 120mm fans. Unfortunately, Amazon didn't pack it well and the box was beat up and the grate over one fan indented to the point of contacting the fan. Fixed it with pliers. On to testing: I ran three load tests with similar results. The fans ran between 2400-2900 RPMs and the average CPU temp was 58*C. A bit cooler but also quieter. At some point I should rerun all the stress tests with the laptops fans set at a static speed. That would show exactly how much each change is worth.

I will give you the spoiler right off the bat. My temps were idling around 50-52C. Way to high. Now they hover around 36- 37C If you do this be careful with the syringe! More on this later. I did this on my ROG GL502. I7 7700HQ with GTX 1070. Risky Buisness for a brand new $1500 lappy. Its a fairly straight forward operation. However, cleaning off the old paste was a PITA. Its like a gum that doesnt stick to a q-tip. It wipes off easy enough but I ended up just pushing it around because it didnt want to stick to anything so as to lift it off. GALLIUM: Back to the Gallium. WARNING!, when I went to apply the gallium, the syringe plunger was a bit sticky at first. So I gave it a little more pressure and the damn thing just let go and squirted a big glob onto the GPU. Phht I basically wasted 95% of. I dipped from there and did the cpu. then basically had to mop up and throw away the rest off the GPU. Even though it came with a super fine tip it would not suck the gallium back up. PADS: I also sprung for the high end XR-M thermal pad which are about $20-25 for about a two inch square. The XR-M is like a clay pad, grey rather then a white tape. Not quite as friendly to work with but as long as you dont handle it like its a strip of tape it isnt an issue.I applied the pads as directed in this video but the heat sink didnt make proper contact with the lower/smaller chips. In my case I should have used the 1mm thickness on both. My solution was to grab the heatsink at the right angle bend and CAREFULLY!!! torque it a tiny bit to make the plate for the small chips bend down a bit more. It was toe up at first so it probably wasnt formed properly to begin with. After that it appeared to be making good contact and If I am not mistaken there is a post on the bottom cover that would appear to push down on the heat sink directly at the small chips. There is a witness mark from it on mine. TEMPS: I have been surfing around for about an hour before this post and I have coretemp open. This whole time the highest max temp is 47C whereas before this thing would be sitting completely idle and cores would all be 50-52C. SO I got easily 10C but mine was really hot to start. Load temps in prime max heat are around 60C with the fans going full. Speaking of fans. I also had big gaps so I used this opportunity to tape the gaps and get max flow through the fins.

Thats actually funny. I watched your video because I had the exact same laptop here and wanted to LM it too.. Now that I chose a different laptop (GL702VI with 1080) I opened it up to do the same. Will try to use the same pads 0.5 and 1 mm on the Vram chips and voltageregulators.. Now the funny part is, that the voltage regulators of the CPU have a heatsink but there was no thermalpaste on them at all.. But different to your laptop they put thermal compound on big square ones (voltage regs.) of the GPU, the small ones beside them AND the ones on the other side that are I'd say of medium highth (as seen at 10:37, the 4 black ones above the 3 square ones). I am not sure why though. The voltageregulators of your cpu had thermal paste on them, so I guess someone messed up in the factory.

sprousaTM it sounds like it! The compound is typically for heat transfer/dissipation from metal to metal. I'd say you are fine using a combination of the two different pad sizes. Any pics of it?

So while gaming I am holding around 86-90C with my CPU and 80C with my GPU. I didn't use the liquid metal but I used Arctic MX-4 thermal paste instead. Are these good temps? I didn't do anything about any kind of fan leak because I don't know what to look for there.

Those are a little hot, depending on the temps of your room. How cool is the room you game in, and what game are you playing to get those temps, and what graphics setting? Many factors come into play. I lost many comments as I re-branded the page just now. i have a qeustion. is the videocard also being used if your just watching youtube or browsing the web? canbt really find an answer online. some msi laptops only use the videocard when the power is required. great pasting i did that too on my old laptop had 20 degrees difference as well.

thanks for you answer. i disagree about your idea though. Having constant your videocard used it produce heat. I really don´t need a gtx1070 to watch your video on youtube. I used to have asus before 2x and had issues with the videocard. Now i own a msi for 3 years and the videocard only kicks in when i play games or other heavy graphic software. Otherwise the videocard is off not producing heat extending its life time and energy (battery). But it is just what you looking for.

Great guide! I just bought the same laptop from BBY for $1350 (best price for a 7700HQ and GTX1070). I read another review with concerns about heat (true for almost all ASUS laptops unfortunately) and found your reply with this link. I will definitely be looking to do this soon including adding the Evo 960. Is everything still holding well? You left the tape on the GPU correct?

When you say overclock the display do you mean the refresh or the GPU? I have don'e the GPU yet but I did up the display to 100 hz (from the 75hz it came at). I started loading stuff on then decided to stop this weekend until I get the Evo installed so I can just load it to that. Thanks for the tips!

How did you know to order the .5mm and 1.0mm thermal pads? there are 1.5mm pads available as well, would they work even better for the gddr modules?

I measured between the distance and depth differences, I am sure you would be fine using 1mm all around though, or even up to 1.5 in place of where I used 1mm, but it suited the purpose :-) ... if you end up using 1.5, let me know! Also, check out my further updated vids here kzbin.info/www/bejne/nIaxhaGXacaaors

I plan on repasting my gl502vs and maybe I will film the process. Thank you for this video. I have a question for you though : I see that they used paste on the chips near the Cpu and Gpu, but you replaced it with pads. Which are less conductive. Would it be better to use paste or pads? Maybe those chips don't heat as much?!

Hey, got the same computer, did you do the repaste ? I plane to go with a Kryonaut instead of conductonnaut, what about the pads ? Ho by the way, 90°C is the max for this computer, it get hard downgrade after that to keep it not warming more, if you look at your frequency you'll see it dropping a lot from 1600+ to 1200 ich in demanding game...

Weird, my Origin with 6700K Desktop CPU sits at 33c Idle without Liquid Metal...My GPU sits around 29-35c. Still debating if I need liquid metal lol. Something was wrong with your ROG. I had a ROG G702vs and under gaming it would never hit higher than 72c on the GPU after hours of gameplay. Hmmmm.
