This song was written by Serge Lama (lyrics) and Alice Dona (melody) about 1971/1972. Serge Lama was married at this time to Daisy Brun, his press secretary. He met his future second wife Michèle Annie Potier who also was married at this time, and they fell in love. As Michèle Annie Potier was building up her musical career in Northern Africa at this time, they could not meet often. So, he told his friend, Alice Dona, that this situation makes him sick. Alice Dona wrote the tune in about 15 minutes (she was ashamed of this being so quickly and said it had to be whispered to her by angels) and gave it to Serge. He wrote the lyrics in about 2 hours. His disc company (Phillips) was hesitating to publish a title with "sickness", but it appeared on his next album. The song grew popular by the cover of the Egyptian-Italian singer Dalida. Since then, it is considered as a classic of the French chanson. Lara Fabian's version of it was chosen as his favourite by Serge Lama. Lara's interpretation of the song was constantly changing. You will find several versions by her on the internet. Sometimes the first half is just spoken, sometimes the whole end is a cappella. About 2000 Sony Music tried to build Lara up to the mains of Mariah, Whitney and Celine. She is a big star in the francophone world, former Soviet Union states, in Brazil and also in Hispanic countries. According to all available information, she must be just the nicest person and most humble human being of all the great singers.

Very emotional reaction, and you're not the first to cry. Lara Fabian is one of the most emotional singers, one of the most powerful and her stage presence is incomparable. His original songs, ADAGIO LIVE, BROKEN VOW, LOVE BY GRACE, JE T'AIME LIVE IN PARIS are masterpieces. In Italian, two sublime performances CARUSO AND PERDERE L'AMORE, this song influenced Dimash and we can see the similarity between the two. Thank you from Montreal.

Lara is amazing. The first time I heard her she was performing "Caruso" and as I have said on other sites... she dropped me to my knees. I had to sit down and listen again. Of course that one is in Italian. She is multi-lingual and can sing in MANY different languages.

More information on Lara Fabian: Lara is recognized as one of the best vocalist ever seen on earth and all professionals list her in the top vocalist tier with Barbra, Whitney, Mariah, Celine, Lisa Fischer, .... In my personal opinion, she is even the best. There are a few vocal characteristics that are her signature: her famous resonance for instance that allows her to sing acapella without mic in venues with 8,000 attendees. Her nickname in the singing world is "the ring" due to this. I would also list her amazing phrasing, breath management and her pleasant tone even when belting in her upper register. So she is one of the best vocalist ever, but on top of that, she adds a few things that make her an absolute package with no equivalence: • she speaks 4 languages fluently (french, italian, english, spanish) and has sung in 12 languages in total • she is an amazing songwriter and wrote lyrics for most her songs, in the 4 languages she speaks. She often co-composes the music with the composer. • she acts and performs on stage as nobody else, she colors and reveals the meaning of every single word in the songs, and her ability to emote, to draw you in is second to none • she is the sweetest soul on earth, very humble, down to earth and benevolent. Incredible is an understatement. She has tremendous stage presence and her songs are perfection. I would suggest you watch both "Adagio" and "Caruso" from her "From Lara With Love" concert. I would also see her live performance of "Je t' emi" where the audience serenades her. Her vocal control, breathing and the quality of her voice are, to me, unmatched. Great reaction, honest feelings. TY!!! She does what she did to you, to us all. Repeatedly. She is a Sorceress Queen, she puts us under a spell and then plays with our emotions at will. We are mesmerized. Spellbound...unable to get out of Lara's world. And when the song is over - we start it over and play it again. We search for and listen to her body of work, we tell our friends, we share her art. And then? We come and watch reactions to her videos trying to recapture the moment it happened to us. Oh my god! This song is a cover from Serge Lama, in the 70's, the lyrics are from Alice Donna... In fact, it's his story. Lara Fabian had bad moments, maybe in the same way, I don't know. By the way, I know her performance by heart because I 'm in the same case, even I' m divorced, and this never stops... Enjoyed your reaction. As you rightly noted, Lara does not sing songs, she performs, and I think this is possibly the greatest performance of a song I have ever seen. I must have watched the original video and reactions to it, well over 100 times. The first time being several years ago before there were any subtitles. But lyrics were not needed, as Lara perfectly conveyed the emotion of the song through her voice, and in fact her entire body. I remember it was the first time I had ever sat there clapping at my laptop (as if she could here me, Lol) after listening to a song on KZbin. Practically every song she performed at this 'From Lara With Love' concert was amazing. I only wish I had been in that audience.

Dear Angela, Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed your reaction of Je Suis Malade. I've been a Lara Fabian fan for many years and have been fortunate to have seen her live on many occasions ( I believe 9 times in total) in both large as well as more intimate venues (which I enjoy more). While there are many reaction on KZbin to Lara's rendition dealing doe the most part on more technical vocal issues, what I love about yours is you had no prior knowledge of Lara or the song and your reaction is so pure and wonderful. I first came across her over 20 years ago, in 2000, when she released her English-language debut album, called 'Lara Fabian.' She performed a dance single called 'I Will Love Again' on a TV show and I knew I had to buy the album. I still love that album, but since then, she's released albums in many languages. She is Belgian and her background is also Italian, via her mother. She is fluent in a number of languages. I recommend checking out her performance of 'Adagio' from this same concert next.

I am one of those who places Lara Fabian in the top rank in world singers , along with singers such as Whitney Houston and Barbara Streisand. For expressive performance, none is her equal. She isn't connected to any of the major studios, has been performing finternationally for more than thirty years and is well-known outside the USA. She is a Belgian and Canadian citizen. Yessss. Exactly. This was my gateway drug to Fabian and I reacted just like you. "Who...what...WHO IS THIS?!?!" And down the rabbithole I went. I've only grown to admire her more as an _astonishing_ all-around artist. While she does compose/write most of her own material (in French/English/Italian/Soanish), the extra amazing thing about Je Suis Malads is that it's a cover (that she tweaked in some pretty substantial & brilliant ways.) She waa classically trained at a conservatory for 10 years. Calls herself a "songwriter with a voice." The perfect marriage of technical mastery & emotive performance skills. Would love to see more of you discovery the wonder that is this Artist. This is a great concert for those of us who first discover Fabian. Her English-language originals Adagio & Broken Vow might be good next stops. Lara can really suck you in and make you feel every emotion .You feel the desperation as the pain is so intense , her voice makes you believe her every word, her expression as she says she is sick from his lack of acknowledging it, she is literally bent is half as if she cannot bear it anymore , that she is losing her mind as well as the will to live.I' ve never met another singer that can draw you in as her! She is unique.Notice at the end when the song is over, it takes a few minutes to gain her exposure, to come back from where she was which was living every emotion she was relaying to us because she truly was living them and most of us felt them as well!

"Je suis malade" (I am sick) is a 1973 song written by Serge Lama. First performed by Lama with no success… So we can really say that surprisingly this moving interpretation is not based on her personal story…

Lara is probably one of the best performer, she always living the song at 110%. she's now 50 years old and she's coaching young talents in a kind of The Voice's like. I'll help you understand what happened! THIS was happening in the times between 1999 and 2001, she was living a damn deep depression that nearly killed her of suicidal thoughts, because of her relation with her man of that time! So even if at the start of that song you see her preparing mentally for the performance of the song, the emotion that she showed was real and was really happening in her heart at that moment! What helped her to save her life was when she was supposed to sang her song "Je t'aime" but as the public knew what she was enduring and living, the public fans decided to make a gift to her and talked to her pianist and asked him to let the fans sing the song to her instead before she could even start so Lara could know that her fans are with her and love her, the fans even changed the title name "Je t'aime" that means "I love you" by "On t'aime" that means "We love you", after that she regained the love to live for her fans! I would suggest to watch to that one too! She live by catharsis, so that means that she will heal herself with things that hurt her so she can overcame her pain! Catharsis is her moto & philosophy of living! Right now, she regained peace of what happened back in those years in her relationship with her ex-boyfriend and live now happily with her new man that she married a few years ago! She is also the Mentor and idol of Dimash and gave him her pianist Igor Krutoy to him to help him create song for Dimash! Opera: From La Traviata "Sempre Libera" ( always free ) Listen to Anna Moffo's version from VAI. There are many excellent versions of this, but this is my favorite. Viotetta is a high class courtesan who lives as a companion to the very rich men of Paris. Two unfortunate things happen to her-- 1. She falls in love with a relatively young, inexperienced middle class man, and 2. She has TB and dies, but not before tearing off some of the best singing you'll ever hear. Yeah, I know. It's opera! The movie is visually wonderful as well, and Moffo is a true beauty.
