“Je suis Malade” was written by famous French singer & songwriter Serge Lama together with composer/singer Alice Dona in 1973. This is based on his own experience and he was the original performer, hence some lyrics are a bit male-oriented (eg my mother leaves me, whiskies, I pour my blood in your body, …). When Serge Lama had a dinner with Alice Dona and told her about his obsessive love that was leading to a road block, she came back home and compose the music in a couple of hours. The morning after, she presented him the music and he wrote the lyrics in … 20 minutes. Serge Lama was the original performer in 1973, but a few months after, Dalida covered it and brought it to fame. She was an absolute mega star in France, another emotional powerhouse, and this song resonated very much with her own feelings. Her success with this song transformed it into a french classic, and started to make it famous abroad. But it is Lara Fabian that really made this song a very popular song in many countries with her cover in the mid 90s. At that time Dalida had already passed away, but Serge Lama was (and is) still alive. Dalida and Serge were two inspirations for Lara, so she sent an audio copy to Serge of her version. She was unknown at that time in France but he was so impressed with her vocal skills and her emotions rendering that he invited her in France to sing it as a duet. They became good friends. Lara has made some subtle changes to the song that gave it even more power and Serge Lama adopted these in his later interpretations. This 1999 version ("From Lara with Love" Concert in Montreal) is legendary internationally and has attracted many artists to do a cover, even from non french-speaking countries. The most recent ones I am aware of are from italian singer Giulia Falcone, from the korean singer Choi Sung Hoon or from the korean band Forestella.

The song was written and sang by Serge Lama. His Mother was leaving him night to make money. He wrote this song because a woman had left him but through this song there is a reproach made to his own mother who prevented his father from having a life as an artist. His breakup reawakened the suffering he had as a child when he saw his father suffer because of his mother

More information on Lara Fabian: Lara is recognized as one of the best vocalist ever seen on earth and all professionals list her in the top vocalist tier with Barbra, Whitney, Mariah, Celine, Lisa Fischer, .... In my personal opinion, she is even the best. There are a few vocal characteristics that are her signature: her famous resonance for instance that allows her to sing acapella without mic in venues with 8,000 attendees. Her nickname in the singing world is "the ring" due to this. I would also list her amazing phrasing, breath management and her pleasant tone even when belting in her upper register. So she is one of the best vocalist ever, but on top of that, she adds a few things that make her an absolute package with no equivalence: • she speaks 4 languages fluently (french, italian, english, spanish), can speak a bit of sicilian, russian and dutch, and has sung in 12 languages in total • she is an amazing songwriter and wrote lyrics for most her songs, in the 4 languages she speaks fluently. She often co-composes the music with the composer. • she acts and performs on stage as nobody else, she colors and reveals the meaning of every single word in the songs, and her ability to emote, to draw you in is second to none • she is the sweetest soul on earth, very humble, down to earth and benevolent. She likes to meet others, and her fans are always pleasantly surprised when this happens. A quick background on her and her career: She is belgian, her father is flemish, but also has italian roots (her mother is from sicilia). She was raised in both countries so she speaks both french and italian as native languages. She has been classically trained on vocal, piano and songs composition for 10 years ( from 8 to 18) in the Brussels Royal Conservatory. She is still having vocal lessons and training several times a week today. She started her career in Canada in the early 90s, more precisely in Quebec, the french-speaking part of Canada. She now lives in Montreal and has also Canadian citizenship She became very famous there and then conquered France in 1997 (she topped charts there and some of her songs such as "Je t'aime" or "Tout" became classics of the french music). In 2000, she was about to penetrate the US Market, with a lot of media initial interest. Her first english song (I will love again), a pop dance song, stayed number one on the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart for 58 weeks in a row and number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100. Her Album ("Lara Fabian") was about to become a massive hit, and the concert "From Lara With Love" was recorded to be broadcasted everywhere in the US. This concert is legendary and the song you just reviewed is from this concert. But a dispute with Sony on artistry directions, and the will from Celine Dion's staff to block her progress in the US, completely broke this plan. She thus refocused back on Europe and made huge success there, extending her reach to Eastern Europe and Central Asia where she became an absolute superstar thru her collaboration with Igor Krutoy during several years. She is also a star in Brazil as her song "Love By Grace", used as the soundtrack for a very famous soap opera, topped the charts for months. Many of her songs became classics and were covered by the other singing legends: Barbra Streisand, Shirley Bassey, Josh Groban, … With her success in Europe, Brazil and part of Asia, she is the inspiration of the new generation of vocalists: most of them are coming from there. Thru their covers of Lara Fabian songs, USA and many other countries are now rediscovering her. She is Dimash's idol: I’ve read somewhere that, when he was a child, he was listening her songs every night to get asleep. He covered many of her songs (that she performed originally ; she also wrote some of these). Out of my mind I can list: ○ Adagio, ○ Mademoiselle Hyde, ○ Know/Vocalise/Ascolta La voce ○ Love of tired swans She also wrote the lyrics of his song « Your Love ». And she covered « Love is like a dream » before him (song from Igor Krutoy originally performed by Alla Pugacheva). They also performed Ti Amo Cosi together with Aida Garafulina: this is a song that she performed originally with Dmitriy Hvorostovsky and Alina Yaroyava then again later with Dmitriy and Sumi Jo, before this new trio with Dimash and Aida. Dimash is now also working with Igor Krutoy who came back from retirement and composed severals songs for him. Many other top vocalists from the current generation covered her songs: ○ Floor Jansen (Adagio), ○ Polina Gagarina (Adagio, Je t’aime), ○ Diana Ankudinova (Tomorrow is a lie, Know), ○ Morissette Amon (Broken Vow), ○ Gabriel Henrique (Love by Grace), ○ Cakra Khan (Broken Vow), ○ Katrina Velarde (Broken Vow), ○ Regine Velasquez (Broken Vow), ○ Giulia Falcone (Adagio, Caruso, Je suis malade, Je t'aime), ○ Daria Bentsa (I guess I loved you), ○ Julie Anne san Jose (Broken Vow), ○ Rimar ( Adagio, Broken Vow), ○ Sarah Geronimo (Broken Vow) ○ Laura Bretan ( Adagio, Caruso), ○ Jackie Evancho (Je t’aime, Caruso and Broken Vow, BV rewritten as « Imaginer » by Lara for Jackie), ○ Almira (from 4th Impact band) (Broken Vow), ○ Amir (Je t’aime), ○ Choi Sung Hoon (Je suis malade), ○ Forestella (Je suis Malade), ○ Petra Berger (Adagio, Broken Vow), ○ Katerina Maslova (Je t’aime, I guess I loved you) ○ .... Today, she still has an amazing voice and tone and can still reach the 5th octave with resonance ; she still offers these emotive renditions that are her unique signature. In June 2022, she kicked off a WW tour and stunned her fans once again with 5 magical concerts in Canada. Sorry if I was long, but I hope this gives some context on Lara.

At last some people talk more over her very beautiful strong velvet voice in all her rangers, nearly angelic...For me Lara's voice is more beautiful than the voice of Celine Dion and the most other world singers of her time....The emotions that she puts in all the words of the songs brings her performances on the top .....Lara Fabian is very underrated and can put you up to speed on Dion, Houston, Carey and Streysant..;Lara unfortunately doesn't have world hits like Dion and the others. After Dion's team, doing everything they could to prevent Lara's success in the US, she has focused more on the French song in Canada, Europe and even Russia with great success...With ""I will love again"" Lara had a number 1 in the American bill board of dance music in the US .... Even in Brazil she had a big hit in 2000 with "love by grace"" ....She can not only sing pop songs , an opera aria ""traviata.""....kzbin.info/www/bejne/ooSrmXureMhnq80

This performance was fantastic but believe it or not the other live performance of this song in 2003 at The Olympia in Paris is absolutely breathtaking. She does an a cappella that is just jaw dropping then the way the song ends well I won't give that away. The standing ovation she got I believe may still be going on because that performance she gave was one that should be studied for ages.

I've seen a lot this performance on KZbin reactions and I am always touched. I begin to understand the role the audience plays. This is in Montreal. Everybody in the audience knows this song, it's kind of a classic. But she reinvents the song, she makes it her song and every well known words of this song means something new, something coming from her heart so the audience is listening intensely each word, each breath, each change from speaking to singing. She is at home with her friends. She gives to the audience a wonderful gift.

But I also love her rock voice that she shows in "Requiem pour un fou" the duet with Johnny Hallyday. No matter what style she is singing in she will make you feel the atmosphere and emotion of the song, which imo is something she has in common with Floor.

English translation from French (sorry for any translation errors) What is wonderful and surprising in "Lara Fabian" is how they enter into her characters, in the story they tell us, she lives totally in her way of interpreting it, in her gestures, in her facial expressions, all her body coming into action singing with her, and yet... (I don’t know if you knew), but this magnificent song she is not the author, neither the composer, nor the original performer, she is a singer, author, composer, and French performer very famous in France, but also of a French-speaking country, he is called "Serge Lama" who is at the origin of this beautiful and touching song, (and yes, it is a man, very romantic who wrote the lyrics and it is Alice Dona who made the original music); he made this farewell to the scene a little more than a year ago) he made many more, just as beautiful, for example "une île" (an island, which I strongly recommend you to listen to). he sang "Je suis malade" (I am sick) for years, then it was covered a first time by a very famous French singer our late "Dalida" who also sublimely interpreted it (just like Lara Fabian many years later). "Dalida" of which I also recommend this song among many others (also written by a man) "Histoire d'un amour" (1957) "Story of a love" So when you say that she had to live this unfortunate love story to be able to interpret it to us in this way and well... not at all. She has of course experienced difficult breakups like everyone else in her life, but fortunately for her, not this one. This is what makes her interpretation even more amazing and beautiful. It is pure talent, a pure diamond, as you will understand I love our "Lara Fabian". I say "our" because it entered our hearts, it is an integral part of us.

She certainly experienced something like that in her life, but she did not write this song. Moments after the end of this song she was prancing about happily. The fact is that, whether or not she had experienced such a thing, Lara prepared every moment and every expression thoroughly and performed meticulously the angst in this song. She is a very talented actor and could have been a professional actress had she so wished.

No, its not a heart broken song, it is a song about a deeply toxic and abusive relationship. If you would not pause at the very importatn short breaks before the lyrics end, you might have gotten it.

First listen to the end of the song - interrupting while watching / listening is very, very unprofessional. Learn from the Japanese - they even applaud sometime after the end of the song.
